I am currently stationed in Seoul at Yongsan Army Installation. I work
in the United States Forces Korea (USFK) Intelligence Directorate (J2)
in the Indications and Warning (I&W) Alert Watch Center.

I am studying the Korean War and I came across your page this
afternoon. I was impressed by the amount of information you have

From: Hugh Scott hmscott@mail.utexas.edu

I just read your article on the Second Korean Conflict. What a great
job! I served 13 months in the ROK from January 1992 to February 1993.

It was easy to forget at that time what sacrifices and efforts US
soldiers had made before me. We had a relatively easy time since at
that point no one believed the NKs were capable of mounting a full-scale
invasion.

I SPENT A YEAR AT CAMP STANLEY IN 92-93. I HAD NO IDEA WHAT KOREA OR
THE KOREAN CONFLICT WAS ABOUT (WITH THE EXCEPTION OF M*A*S*H) UNTIL
THEN.

I RETURNED WITH A DEEP SENSE OF PRIDE OF NOT ONLY HAVING SERVED IN
KOREA, BUT 2ID IN PARTICULAR. I MET AN ELDERLY KOREAN GENTLEMAN ONE
NIGHT IN UIJONGBU WHO STARTED HUGGING ME AND SAYING, "AMERICAN GI,
LOVE YOU!" THAT WAS WHEN I REALIZED WHY I WAS THERE AND WHY THE CONFLICT
(I HATE THAT WORD - IT WAS A WAR!) TOOK PLACE. GOD BLESS EVERYONE WHO
FOUGHT IN THAT WAR!

Served in Korea for three years with the Manchu's from 94' to 97'.
The unit has a great tradition still to this day. I feel it is a great
honor to have served on the same ground as those heros that did so some
47 years ago, like my grandfather MSG Davidson. I also had the honor to
meet in person a few great American veterans, SGM (ret) Cook and
Col (ret) Ferko.

Hats off to all you Super Troopers!!! Keep up the fire!!!

I am a US soldier here in Korea right now. I had an uncle I will never
know personally that was KIA here in 1951. I have always been looking
for additional information on the order of battle of the 187th RCT for
that time. He was an infantry PVT assigned to that unit when he was KIA.

I kind of feel that I am fulfilling the mission he never accomplished
then. This is my 5th tour here. I have been with 2nd Engr Bn at CP
Castle 85-87, 2nd Bn 72nd Armor at CP Casey 89-90, 61st Maint Co at CP
Kyle 90-91, A Co 702nd Main Support Bn at CP Nimble 96-97, and now here
at CP Humphreys near Pyongtaek with the 520th Maint Co since 97.

My wife also happens to be Korean who I have met my first time here. I
believe in what we are doing here is right and am proud to tell that to
anyone. Even though the US and ROK have a bi-lateral defense agreement,
the US forces are still part of the first United Nations Command and
all the service members of the 16 nation multi-national force whom have
been here since the ceasation of open hostilities should deserve the
United Nations Medal. Also we who have been here after 1976 and the
close of the combat zone deserve more than a "pat on the back".

Soldiers received medals for being in Kuwait for training years after
the Persian Gulf conflict and still received the same medals that actual
combatants did. Even though we seem to be on the same footing, we here
in Korea are ready to go to battle at a moments notice against one of
the largest militaries in the world today. A Korean service medal
should be put forward for those that have faced the DMZ and that deserve
better recognition. I am not saying it for myself, but for all of those
soldiers, especially in the areas above Seoul, that live constantly for
a year under the threat of a real, hostile enemy willing to do what ever
is needed to acheive their objectives.

I was in Korea from '92 to '93, a soldier with the American
Forces Korea Network (AFKN) providing television coverage of US
military activities in the Western Corridor area, including
Panmunjom. I was stationed next to Camp Pelham.

While it's been several years since I was there, I would be glad
to answer any questions people might have about the way that
things were at that time. I worked with quite a few units in the
area, including 1/4th Field Artillery, 1/503d and 1/506th
Infantry, 5/17th Cavalry (redesignated, formerly part of 7th
Cav), 2nd and 44th Engineers, 5/5 Air Defense, and a few other
units in 2nd and 3rd Brigade of 2 I-D. I also did a few stories
with the soldiers of the Joint Security Area (Panmunjom).

I'd be glad to answer any questions people might have, or just
share experiences.

I'm proud to have served in Korea, and proud of all others who
have sacrificed in one way or another there as well. Keep up the
good work!

I found the work to be outstanding. Having served in the UNCSG-JSA,
I was briefed on many of the events in the DMZ. However, I never knew
how much combat really took place.

I've spoken to '60's era Korea vets about the ROK, but they just smile
and say "you just don't know." Well, you book will open alot of closed
doors on a very interesting and unknown portion of our services
operations in NEA.
