He was awarded a purple heart & two bronze stars for valor. His Army documents say he was wounded by the Punch Bowl but that battle was in 1951 before he joined up. He recently passed away. He told the hospice nurse that his Army friends from Korea were there to take him away. We know a lot about our Dad but not much about Korea. He didn't like to talk about it. Thank you all for your service. My brothers and I all served.
I am looking for anyone knowing my father either at EtaJima Korean Project or during the conflict. Just trying to find out more about him. He passed in 2000 and did not talk much about the war v
Dad went through basic at Ft. Dix in NJ. He was transferred to Ft. Lewis. I know he was in the Signal Corps and got involved in martial and was an accomplished boxer. On his way to Japan he was asked to attend EtaJima specialist school. He got very involved with Martial Arts and boxing. He won a # of martial tournaments and was the Golden Glove Champ.
I remember him telling me that they had a timed 30 mile March and they had to best the Jaoanese time as their was still a high level of animosity after WWII. He was 19-20 years old and received a battlefield promotion to captain. He refused a regular commission and eventually returned back to the states where he was reduced in rank back to MSGT.
Any help would be appreciated.
