Comments: I,m trying to find anyone that remembers me that served on the Pine Island from early 1952 to late 1955. My wife said that there was an E-mail from the Pine Island yesterday, but did not read it. When I checked my E-mail today there was no message. If anyone knows of this message please, would you forward it to me?
Thank Jack O.

USS Pine Island Antarctic 1946 Crew to Be Recovered From 61 Year Old Temp Grave |

Comments: George 1 US Navy Air Crew off USS Pine Island Dec 30 1946 to be recovery from 61 Year Temporary Antarctic Grave.

http://www.govtrack.us/congress/bill.xpd?bill=hc110-301
Mission: Utilizing proven technology the George One/Operation Highjump Recovery Team will safely recover and return to US soil, to their families and to their nation, three US Naval flight crew members killed when their converted Mariner Patrol Bomber (PBM-5) seaplane code named "George-One" off the USS P9ine Island December 30th 1946 - crashed on Antarcticas Thurston Island during the US Navy, Admiral Richard Byrd led, 1946-47 Operation Highjump.
History On December 30th 1946, during Operation Highjump, in complete whiteout conditions and on instrument flight rules (IFR,) the PBM-5 Mariner Seaplane designated George One bumped the Thurston Islands Noville Glacier and exploded while attempting to climb and turn back out to sea. Victimized by the Antarctics notoriously foul-weathered Phantom Coast, the non-surviving crew and the photoreconnaissance Mariner Patrol Bomber remain buried in up to 150 feet below the accumulating snows of Thurston Island. (Latitude 98.8W Longitude 71.8S.) Sixty years ago, in what was meant to be a temporary grave, Ensign Maxwell A. Lopez, Newport, RI; Frederick Warren Williams, Aviation Machinists Mate First Class, Huntington, TN and Wendell K. Hendersin, Aviation Radioman First Class, Sparta, WI were buried beneath a specific and well-marked area under the starboard leading-edge of the large PBM-5 wing. Six fellow crewmen survived the crash and were rescued 13 days later. Adverse weather conditions during the end of Operation Highjump precluded the recovery of the fallen crewmen. For 60 years the surviving families, surviving George One crewmembers and crewmembers of the rescue teams have long petitioned the U.S. Navy to recover the men for proper interment in the United States.
The families are mounting a recovery effort to bring home

Comments: My father served on board the USS Pine Island AV-12 between 1951 and 1955. I would like to talk to or e-mail anyone that remembers him. I am building a presentation model of the Pine Island for him. His cruise/yearbooks have not survived the years. Anyone with pictures of him with shipmates or of life on board I would appreciate recieving copies via e-mail or post. Letters to him, I will forward. I wish to give him the letters, and/or pictures when I present him with the model at Christmas this year(2007). My father was Radioman William H. Warman From Stearns, Kentucky. Thank you for all your hard work and sacrifices. Sincerly, Robert P. Warman

Comments: My Father-In-Law was in the Navy from 5/16/52 through 10/18/55. His 2 ship assignments were the USS Pine Island AV-12 and the USS Oriskany CVA-34. What we need to know is what ship was he on and the location of that ship on March 1, 1954. He has always said that he "was there" at the Bikini Atoll Test. He has bladder cancer now and it would be very helpful if we had proof of this assignment.

Comments: I am looking for anyone who would remember my father. He was a 5'10" handsome Italian from New York. He served on the USS Pine Island some time during his tenure. He enlisted in 1948 and his tours of duty ended in 1957. I am his oldest daughter of 7 children. We have a picture of dad in a v-necked tee shirt sitting at the base of the crane on the USS Pine Island. Who took that picture? We would love to hear any info you have. Dad passed away in 1990, and I miss him everyday. I would love to know someone who knew him back then.

Then there was Tonkin Bay and DeNang. What a beautful city that was.And how about HongKong who could forget the rooftops of Hong Kong? What about White Beach, village 1,village 2 Naha,Kidina,Subic Bay.....Those were the days and I can still see them and all my shipmates in my mind,Only problem, its the names I'm having trouble with.Wish I had listened to MAMA.She really did tell me not to SMOKE IT ! But I did and it took me around another world.Prase the Lord I'm back.

Comments: Upon completing Navy Boot Camp at NTC -San Diego in Company #579, December 7 1956 through March 1957, I went aboard the Pine Island while it was undergoing overhaul in the Long Beach Naval Shipyard.
I spent the remainder of my "kiddie cruise" time on board the ship.
I began as a Fireman Apprentice in "R" Division, and worked up to Shipfitter-Pipe 2nd Class, paygrade E-5. I worked with USAFI, taking college level courses in English, science, and physics, as well as several journalism and writing courses. During the final 18 months of service, I transferred into X division and began working in the Public Information as Petty Office in Charge, and editor-in-chief of the ships newspaper, the Piney Maru. I help produce the 1959 and 1960 Cruise Books.
I still have a copy of each of these books, if anyone is interested. Many of the photos of crewmembers do not list their names, but I might be able to remember them if anyone sends me the first, last, and division they worked in, and I might be able to scan some photos and email them.
Within the pages of these two books, there are a number of photos of the ship, the crew, the officer cadre, and its operations, plus the history of the ship from it's commissioning on 26 April 1945 through 1960. There are also the published "Specifications" for the ship. Contact me if interested.

Comments: Hello everyone. I´m a modelbuilder and currently working on a large scale model of an aircraft carrier (CVE-26 USS Sangamon) The model is about 9ft long and highly detailed. Until now I have sepend almost 4000hrs of work on this model. (Started about 4 1/2 years ago)and now his model is almost finished. Now I´m already planing the next major project. My favourite choice would be a large scale model of the Pine Island Scale would be 1:72, which means the model is almost 9ft. long. Before I can start to work on such a model I need plans of the ship, so here is my question: Does anyone know if there are any plans available of the ship, I would prefer plans of the ship as it looked in the 60's, but offcourse I would even be happy with any plans showing the hull and the profiles. Just to make sure I off course would pay fort those plans. I would be very happy to hear from anyone about this matter.
Thank you very much
René Hieronymus

Comments: I served in V-1 Division (airdale) during the years 1955 and 1956 as coxswain of the number 2 crash boat. Anyone whose cruise book from '56 survived,(mine didn't)can see my picture hanging on the fantail crain hook in the full page photo of us trying to hoist the downed P5M that ran out of fuel comming out from San Diego. Now that I'm leaving senior citizen status and passing into full blown geezerhood, my sea stories seem to become even more colorful! Those two years aboard the Piney Maru gave me a supply for life! Why is it that looking back you only recall the funny occurances? Remembering the loss of Didier in V-2, it certainly was not all fun and games at the time. My best to all who served. We were there.
