Comments: I served on the Pine Island from May 1951 to October 1954. I was a Chaplains Assistant, YN3 and worked under 3 Chaplains during my time on board.
I formed a small jazz band under Chaplain Parkinson. I assisted in publishing a weekly newspaper on board.
A few days after coming on board we were in a major hurricane and took a 30 degree list which was was scary.
We anchored in Buckner Bay, Okinawa and in the Pescadores Islands in the Formosa Straits.
We also visited Yosusuka, Japan, Hong Kong, Sangley Point, Phillipines,Midway Island, Pearl Harbor, Hunters Point, SF, Long Beach Naval Shipyard and San Diego which was our Home Port.
I assisted the Chaplain in Sunday Services and held a Bible study frequently.
I was friends with many great shipmates and had a great service time on board
I would enjoy hearing from anyone who remembers me on board. I am 86 years young and enjoying a positive Christian life with my wife Ann of 42 yers.

I came into possesion of a photograph years ago of a gentleman who was adding the finishing details to what looks like a builders model, of the Pine Island.
The model appears to be a 1/4" to the foot model and the photo is 8 1/2 X 11". I would believe that the photo was displayed in an Naval facility at one time.
My brother served in the Navy as a pilot from WWII through Vietnam and at one time was attached to the Greenwich Bay as well as other VP Squadrons.
I will donate the photo. Please supply appropriate contact info and I will forward, provided all persons in your organization have access to the photo.

Mission:
Utilizing proven technology the George One/Operation Highjump Recovery Team will safely recover and return to US soil, to their families and to their nation, three US Naval flight crew members killed when their converted Mariner Patrol Bomber (PBM-5) seaplane code named "George-One" off the USS P9ine Island December 30th 1946 - crashed on Antarcticas Thurston Island during the US Navy, Admiral Richard Byrd led, 1946-47 Operation Highjump.
History
On December 30th 1946, during Operation Highjump, in complete whiteout conditions and on instrument flight rules (IFR,) the PBM-5 Mariner Seaplane designated George One bumped the Thurston Islands Noville Glacier and exploded while attempting to climb and turn back out to sea. Victimized by the Antarctics notoriously foul-weathered Phantom Coast, the non-surviving crew and the photoreconnaissance Mariner Patrol Bomber remain buried in up to 150 feet below the accumulating snows of Thurston Island. (Latitude 98.8W Longitude 71.8S.)
Sixty years ago, in what was meant to be a temporary grave, Ensign Maxwell A. Lopez, Newport, RI; Frederick Warren Williams, Aviation Machinists Mate First Class, Huntington, TN and Wendell K. Hendersin, Aviation Radioman First Class, Sparta, WI were buried beneath a specific and well-marked area under the starboard leading-edge of the large PBM-5 wing. Six fellow crewmen survived the crash and were rescued 13 days later.
Adverse weather conditions during the end of Operation Highjump precluded the recovery of the fallen crewmen. For 60 years the surviving families, surviving George One crewmembers and crewmembers of the rescue teams have long petitioned the U.S. Navy to recover the men for proper interment in the United States.
The families are mounting a recovery effort to bring home
