I think he also served on the USS Salem before it was decommissioned.

Comments: I served on the USS Juneau CLAA 119 from August 1950
until May 1953. I can tell you that it was a unique
experience. I boarded the Juneau at sea on its way to
Formosa (Taiwan). The Juneau was called the 7th fleet
and was sent to protect Nationalist China from invasion
by Mainland China. After a few weeks we went back to
Korea. We came back to the states in May 51, them to
Pearl Harbor for three month and then to Mare Island
for a refit. We left again for Korea in late 52 and
came back to the states in early 53. After a short stay
in Long Beach we went to Norfolk via the Panama Canal.
My time was up and I left before she left for a
Mediterranean cruise and I think she was decommissioned
shortly after that.
In 1950 we were at sea continuously for almost three
months. The only hint of combat was the expedition to
blow up a railway tunnel in the first days of the war.
We used t bombard the coast but only once that I can
remember were we fired upon.
There were a lot of interesting characters in the crew:
A guy named Walker, who was in charge of the ships
store. He sold all of the cigarettes in the ships store
on the black market in Taiwan and we all stopped
smoking for a few weeks.
Rocky Thomas, who had to be the worlds biggest liar.
Every time he went on liberty (leave) he went AWOL and
only came back when apprehended by the FBI.
PJ Smith, who had a vocabulary so imaginative and
graphic, that you could never remove his expressions
from your memory, no matter how hard you tried.
The food was memorable. Two of the cooks favorites
were, Ground Beef Mush served on a slice of bread,
Shit on a Shingle and Chipped Beef on Toast
Foreskins on Toast. The bread was full of weevils
which the cook said gave it a nice meaty flavor.
If anyone got out of line he would go to Capitans Mast
(a form of military justice) and be sentenced to spend
a few days in a three by six steel cell on bread and
water.
While we were in Korea we participated in several
historic operations such as Pusan without any idea of
what was going on.
I would not swap the experience for anything, but I
would never volunteer to do it over again.

Comments: On 11,July1950, around 1930, a Navy-Marine demolition
team departed the USS Juneau CLAA-119 by motor whale
boat, to the USS Mansfield DD-728. The Mansfield
headed for the target area, well north of the
40th.parallel, near the village of Tanchon. At 0100,
12,July1950, the USS Mansfield closed to within a few
thousand yards of the North Korean beach in darkness.
After the patrol landed, 2 Marines were left at the
beach, and the patrol went inland. The demolition
charges were set in the railroad tunnel, to detonate
when the next enemy train passed through. All of the
patrol were back aboard the USS Mansfield by 0330.
North Korean radio later indicated that the mission
