Comments: Hello,
I am searching for anyone who might have served in Weapons Co, 1st
Battalion, 7th Marines from May 1951 to December 1951. My uncle,
William Ullmann was a member of Weapons Co during this time period
and I am trying to find out more information about his time in service.
He was later KIA July 19, 1953 at COP Berlin as a member of I Co, 3rd
Battalion, 7th Marines.
His records indicate that he was SSGT and Squad Leader as well as AT
leader during this period. He was also wounded several times. He was
a small guy, not too tall and skinny. Originally from the NJ/NYC area.
Really hoping to find someone who knew him, have been searching a
long time.

In June 1951 he was wounded and awarded a Purple Heart.
He was KIA 30 October 1951 on Hill 441 which I believe
was near the Punch Bowl. A small theater was built and
dedicated in his honor. The site is inside the current DMZ.
I would greatly appreciate hearing from anyone that

Comments: I had arrived in Korea late in 1953. I was stationed just North of the Imjim river as a BAR man in my squad. That was Baker Company. A couple months later, I was transfered to H and S Company which was just across the valley. There, I was assigned to being a searchlight operator in the TACP unit. ( tactical air control party )We had 3 searchlight operators ( one for each company in the Bn.)There were also 4 radio operators in TACP.We had a Marine Fighter Pilot as our group commander. They took turns rotating into our group every 4 months. The Marines perfected ' close air -to -ground support' We were trained to light up targets for the Marine pilots while the radio operators called in air strikes. I arrived in Korea just after the war stopped so I never did more than keep up on my training but others before me used those lights to light up the hills when the enemy attacked their positions.
I would like to hear from anyone who was there around that time. Korea was the first time in the Marine Corps history that they used searchlights like this. Anyone who was associated with TACP, please contact me as it would be interesting to hear from you.

Comments: Frank Britt, my father, recently died. I have old Korea photographs - which include photos of Marines in and around Koto-Ri, images of the breakout convoys, and the Chosin Resevoir. If you are interested please let me know. It would be great if these are passed on to other family members. I have scanned these into a pdf file and several jpg's.
Dad was a Corpsman serving in Charlie Company of the 7th Regiment. He landed at Inchon, and later on the east cost of Korea for the drive to Chosin. Dad was there when the Chinese attacked in early November. Dad was wounded in combat on November 11 in the hills above Koto-ri. I do not know how he got some of these photos since they were taken after he was evacuated. The breakout came later that month. I also have a photograph of his graduating class for Hospitalmen, April, 1948 as well.
As many here have said, veterans of combat don't speak of their experiences. However, towards the end of Dad's life he collected a whole series of books on the Korean War which I am reading now. Reading these, having seen my Dad's bronze star and Purple Heart, his wound, makes me a very proud son, a humble and grateful American. God bless all of you who served in Korea and might read this!

Comments: My wife is writing a book and is looking for dates concerning the battles my outfit was in. Who should she contact? I never knew what day it was when I was there, only trying to stay alive from day to day. I just did what Capt. B.B. Bradley, my platoon leader told me to do and I credit him and God with my safe return home and God bless those pilots flying the Corsairs. Semper Fi

Comments: Hello -- Does anyone have any documentation proving that the 1st Marine Division, 7th Regiment, Charlie Company served in combat during the Korean War. My father-in-law was recently told by the Pentagon that he is ineligible for the Combat Action Ribbon because he has no proof that he participated in "bona fide ground or surface combat fire fight or action during which he/she was under enemy fire". My father-in-law did indeed serve in combat and was even wounded.
We would appreciate any help that you can offer.

HEADQUARTERS
1ST MARINE DIVISION (REINF) FMF
c/o FLEET POST OFFICE
SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA
In the name of the President of the United States, the
Commanding General, 1st Marine Division (Reinf) FMF,
takes pleasure in awarding the BRONZE STAR MEDAL to
CORPORAL JOHN C. ONTIVEROS
UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS
for service as set forth in the following
CITATION:
"For meritorious achievement in connection with operations
against the enemy in KOREA while serving with a Marine infantry
company from 7 May 1951 to 30 March 1952.
Serving as a fire team leader, Corporal ONTIVEROS displayed
outstanding courage, initiative and devotion to duty.
On one occasion when seriously wounded during an attack
on heavily defended enemy positions, he refused evacuation
and continued to designate targets and direct the advance
of his fire team until forced to be evacuated.
On 17 January 1952 when his company came under a savage
attack by a reinforced enemy squad, he left the cover of
his bunker, exposing himself with complete disregard for
personal safety to intense enemy fire. This action, causing
many enemy casualties, assisted in the final repulsing of the
attack.
Corporal ONTIVEROS' heroism and fortitude throughout were
in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States
Naval Service."
Corporal ONTIVEROS is authorized to wear the Combat "V".
