Comments: I'm researching details on my grandfather. He was in the 7th Marines in Korea and specifically fought at the Chosin Reservior. I'm trying to figure out what specific company/task force/unit/battalion he was in. (I'm not very familiar with the divisions, subdivisions, etc).

I have a newspaper article that says he was one of 37 marines to make it out alive from his unit in 'October' battle. This doesn't seem to be accurate, he was evacuated on Dec 20th to Japan & then to Hawaii on the 24th. I also know the Battle of Chosin didn't start until late November 1950.

Comments: Have just revisited South Korea with 49 other vets who served in defense of S. Korea. I served 1953-1955. A-1-7 with outpost on hill 495.
South Korea is a beautiful country with a great variety of trees. My time there, there were no trees, all bombed out. There was nothing standing at that time, thus it took a large bull dozer to push through the results of bombing making a way for the military to move.
I came in at Inchon as a replacement for A-1-7, Dec. 1953 until March 1955.
Does anyone know the location of hill 495?
If you have the opportunity to revisit S.Korea-take the trip. The Koreans are most grateful for the American vets.

Comments: I am interested in a friend, mentor who served in the USMC. He made a career with the USMC. William J. Murphy served in Korea and Viet Nam. Bill did not go into depth of his war time experiences. In the mid 80's, I worked for Bill at the Federal Reserve Bank [Portland Oregon]. Bill was well read, and came from a military family. His dad served as an advisor to Winston Churchill during WWII. To my best recall, Bill served with the 171, landed at Inchon and marched north to the Yalu. His position was overran. Bill spent 30 months as an POW. If by chance any Brothers in Arms, or reference to Bill's experience in Korea. I think of him often. He has help shape me into the man I am today. He was old school. I believe he was born in 1930 in Pakistan as his Dad was serving in the British Army at the time.
Thank you, for hearing me out.
P.S. My brother in law served with the Thundering Herd 66-67 Viet Nam.

I'm looking for anyone who might have known my great-uncle, Kirby "James" Howlett Holt who was wounded on September 12, 1951 on hill 673. He was a machine gunner with the Weapons Company of the 1st Battalion, 7th Marines, 1st Marine Division.
He was from Nashville and had red hair (although he dyed it black, it may have went from black to red while he was in Korea).
He was wounded by a shell fragment which entered his left buttock and did extensive damage to his crotch area. He died at the Naval Hospital on Okinawa, Japan on September 23, 1951.
I know it is a long shot but I appreciate any info you may have. Thanks.

Comments: My Dad, Retired Capt. Robert A Bock was a warrior of the 1st Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division. Even though he retired from MCAS Cherry Point, NC in 1976, he always associated himself as a 1st Marine Division Marine. He was a Chesty Puller and John Basilone kind of Marine. An Inchon/Chosin Reservoir Campaign Marine. Decorated, courageous, and demonstrating a gallant devotion to duty the hell of which I can only imagine. He loved the Marine Corps, though as is typical of his generation never divulged a great deal about his personal sacrifices. Hes a patriot who loved and served his country. He was also a Pennsylvania State Trooper and served in various other communities as a Police Officer. Hes my hero for these reasons, and more. He will be remembered and celebrated for his service and sacrifice with the reverence and respect all veterans deserve. My Dad passed away this morning in Western North Carolina from natural causes at the age of 83. Godspeed, Dad.

He was from Cleveland, Ohio and his brother, Karl Muellauer also served. My dad passed away on June 12, 2014 and was not until after that I found out that he was in this battle. He was always very quiet about his time in the war and I knew it was horrific for him so I knew not to ask too many questions. I always knew he was a hero, but now that I know that he was involved in this battle I am truly even more grateful and proud of him and all of you who served. I also know he sustained frost bite. While in college I wanted to enroll in the ROTC program because I wanted to serve my country. My parents resisted me severely. It was not until my dad's death that I was told that because of this battle he did not want any of his 6 children in the military. I love my country. I love my father and am so proud of him. I only wish I knew this prior to his death and I am longing to get more/any information that somebody may have about him.

Comments: Does anyone know my grandfather Sgt. James L Volner? I don't believe he was
Sgt. Until he came back from Korea. I believe he served 51-52. I never got to talk
to him about his service and would love to know anything anyone knows about
him.
