Comments: Hello. I recently contacted the National Archives to find information about my deceased father who was in the US Marines during the Korean War, and I wanted to share what I had found, for anybody who might be interested.
Gerald Shannon Haggerty (Born in Los Angeles, California in August 1932).
Joined the USMC in September 1950. Trained at Camp Pendleton.
Assigned to the 1st Battalion, 11th Marines, 1st Marine Division (artillery reinforcements).
Served in Korea from April 1951 - May 1952.
Most-likely saw action during the Chinese Spring Offensive on the East-Central Front (April - June 1951). His highest rank was a corporal.
He received the Korean Service Medal with 4 stars, the National Defense Service Medal, and the United Nations Service Medal.
After serving in Korea for a year he returned to Camp Pendleton and served in the Service Battery, 2nd Battalion, 12th Marines, 3rd Marine Division (artillery support) from June 1952 - Oct 1953. He completed his Marine duties with an honorable discharge.
Gerald Haggerty worked for over 20 years in a steel mill in Los Angeles. He died of cancer in November 1977. He left behind a wife with 7 children. He was buried at Rose Hills Memorial Park in Whittier, California.

Comments: I'm looking for information on my father, Don Groves, who served in the 1/11 Marines. I'm also looking for help on research methods and sources, as the project is kind of intimidating.
My father, as far as I can tell, sailed over from Pendleton in August, 1950, then fought in the 1/11 in the Pusan Perimeter, was among the first two regiments at Inchon, helped retake Seoul, sailed into Wonsan, then moved up the MSR towards Chosin Reservoir, through Sudong, Hagaru, and Yudam-ni, where the s*it hit the fan.
Dad came down with frostbite in December, 1950, and was back in the States by March, 1951, where he met my mother and was married three months later. Always had pain in his feet. Died in 1989 of smoking-related illnesses.
We loved him dearly and I'm writing up a chronicle of his service for the grandchildren and future generations, for remembrance. If you have any information, feel free to contact me.

I just want to know if I am living up to his level of right-ness and teaching my children to do the same. I hope so. He was in the Marines with a special force group of sea-diving guys that dove and set explosions and also diffused bombs-that was all he could talk about. He spent the rest of his life missing his brothers in the service and serving his community. He died fishing and fell down on a rock, hitting his head while looking for his net. I just know, he kept his identity and always looked back to you boys as his true home-can anyone find him for me-to let my children get a sense of his strength and here mine (and theirs) will come from?-Thank you for your help-Danielle

I believe he served under Chesty Puller. I am interested in knowing about how he was wounded. I have this citation for the bronze Star he receieved and I am looking for anyone that might have known him. His citation reads in part, as follows, if this helps:
"For heroic achievement while serving as a Property Sergeant of Headquarters Battery, First Battalion, 11th Marines, First Marine Division (Reinforced), in action against enemy agressor forces in Korea on 4 December, 1950..."
Before Korea, he was a WWII Marine fighting throughout the South Pacific, joining the Marine Corps in 1939. In later years Dad was a member of the local chapter of the Chosin Few here in Oceanside CA, and returned to Korea with others in '93 for the Anniversary of the Inchon Landing.
Anyone out there that knew him I would sure like to hear from you. He passed away in 1995 and we still miss him terribly.

Comments: On a Friday in 1950 between my Jr and Sr year at North Denver High School, I enlisted in the USMC Reserves, the 155 Gun Battalion at the Denver Federal Center. But, due to a lengthy physical, I was too late to be sworn in. I was told to return on Tues to be sworn in. On the Sunday between, the Korean War began and my mother burned my papers since I was just 17. As a result, with regret, I never served
I would like to know more about the men that were in the unit and what became of them. I have been told that the unit suffered 75% KIA or wounded.
My wife is an Air Force Veteran who served during the Korean War and is currently VP of the Denver Chapter of the KWVA.

Comments: I'm looking for anyone who may have served with my father, William (Bill or Nano) G. Cornelli. He was in the 1st Marine Division 11th Regiment. I'm not sure if he was a Sgt. or Ssgt. when he served during Korea. He had told me he also was an MP for some of his time. He served in WWII fighting in Okinawa, Peleliu and other Pacific battles. After his service he was stationed in Quantico until the early 60's.
