Comments: I was stationed on that 6400 ft mountain with a Ground Radar Group directing Aircraft to North Korea. Sixty degrees below in the winter 1951--Supplies (beer and cigs) some food were sent to hilltop once weekly. We had Korean houseboys--looking for S/Sgt Dutton, Airman Cliff Poole or Richard Durbin. That old Radar Antenna would really moan turning into the wind until we build a wooden shield--e-mail from anyone would be appreciated. REMEMBER THE R AND R'S to Japan????

Comments: May 1 also known as "May Day" each year brings back old memories to me. Exactly 52 years ago today in the evening I thought my end was near. I was assigned to work with a small group of US Army and Republic of Korea (ROK) Engineers in repairing a mountain road several miles south of the 38th Parallel on the East coast of Korea. We had a communications site on the top of the mountain. I was an 18 year old S/Sgt. driving a large dump truck. We lived in tents a few miles from the mountain top and normally got paid the 1st of each month if we were at our base compound; however, since we were living and working on the mountain we would not get paid until a day or so later when the Payroll Officer made his trip up the mountain. Since I was eager to get paid I claimed that I needed to take my truck back to our downhill facilities for maintenance after work that day. The trip would take about 2-3 hours and it was approaching darkness by the time I departed. Since it was "May Day" we had been warned to be alert for potential communist guerilla activity.
Shortly after I started my trip I began thinking what I would do if I came upon a roadblock. Most of the road was only wide enough for one vehicle and was in very poor condition with many blind curves and steep drop-offs. All along the road were numerous armed ROK soldiers that were hitch hiking. Shortly after starting my trip I picked up an armed ROK soldier which made me feel better since I felt that he could help me if we were ambushed. Unfortunately, he only wanted a relatively short ride and I was again alone and the daylight was getting low. In my mind I had a mental image of being ambushed by going around a blind curve and finding a pile of boulders blocking the way. A few miles after dropping off the ROK soldier I rounded a blind curve and there in the middle of the road was exactly what I was afraid of, a huge boulder that was blocking the path. I threw on the brakes and barely stopped before crashing. I removed my rifle from its rack, placed it next to me and slowly inched my way around the rock all the time expecting to be fired on. Apparently, the boulder just tumbled onto the roadway as I was not shot. After getting around the boulder I began driving as fast as I could (actually much too fast considering the road conditions) until I arrived at our compound near Kangnung, Korea.
After arriving at our base compound I got paid. That night while I was asleep with my loaded rifle and fatigues laying next to me someone took my wallet out of my fatigues, stole $136.00 and replaced the wallet. The above is why May 1st is a day that I will always remember.
I would like to hear from others that were in the 608th, especially in the first 6 months of 1952.

Names like Bob Taylor, John Leute and Dick Hertzig also ring a bell. I have a photo of Bob Taylor in the process of burying some “fresh” green onions that his wife sent him. By the time they arrived from the states they were rotten and needed a decent burial.
Would enjoy swaping stories and possibly picts from that experience. Can't believe it's been 50 years ago this year.

Comments: My name is Thomas Hong who was a Korean orphan and worked for cooks unit as a houseboy at the 608th ACWS 502nd TC in Paengnyong-Do and also later worked in the mess hall as kitchen helper from 1953 to 1956.
I was 12 years old a dirty and hungry little orphan boy in 1953 until the cooks unit of ACWS 502nd TC gave me foods and clothes and kept me as their houseboy.
Because of their loving, helps and cares, I have survived myself and graduated from the university.
I left the island in 1956 for Seoul and I got a job from U.S. Embassy in Seoul and also severed 8th U.S. Army Headquarters as a KATUSA (Korean Army to U.S. Army) for 3 years.
Especially one cook, who is an Italian decendent, called Joe treated me as his little brother. His parent sent me clothes and books for the christmas present. He said he was a boxer and from North-Eastern States.
Currently I am living in Toronto, Canada as a
Canadian citizen since 1975. Every Christmas is coming near, the memories of the Paengnyong-Do is awlays in my mind and wishing to see them again and want to thank them for their generosity.
If any one out there recognizes me as 'Mickey" the houseboy of the cooks unit, please contact me by e-mail or phone at 416-693-5538.
I sincerely look forward to hearing from anyone who remember me.

First time I've ever seen anything other than in the book "Dark Moon". As I recall, they used to train in the school yard at the bottom of the hill
(village of Chinchon-ni). Also remember watching the fire fights at night, when they used to raid the mainland from "donkey island" (Wollae-do) and the occasional body that would wash up on the beach.

One is 6 1/2" and reads THE EYES AND FARS OF MIG ALLEY (and yes, it is actually an "f" instead of an "e") and pictures an F-86 Sabrejet held in an upraised hand. The second is 4 1/2" and reads TEAMWORK FOR FREEDOM in a gold circle with a poorly drawn radar antenna over a bald eagle with talons outstreached. I would appreciate any help I can get. Comments: Would like to make contact with anyone who served on Angel's Peak from August of 1956 through January of 1958. Visited the site with Bob Harshman in June of 2000. Radar site is still functioning, squadron area has turned into a "Youth Denention" facility.
I have recent pictures for anyone who is interested.

Comments: I was at the Rock K-53 in 1957, after the war was suppose to be over, I often wondered why I spent time in a foxhole around the radar site with a BAR, they forgot to tell the north the war was over.
It was an exciting year. A week after I arrived the orderly room burned, later the movie theatre burned, and then the dining hall was burned down by the mess Sgt. after he robbed the safe. A lot of other things happened. A drunk Air Policeman in a weapons carrier went through the roof of the officers club comming down radar hill one morning. One of the most exciting was the C-119 stuck in the ocean as the tide came in.They could have written a sequel to "Wake me when its over" about the Rock.A lot of thing made it a different year, but one consolation the war was over. The out house was hard to get use to, as were the "PY-DO cannons" (Pi-- Tubes). After using one on a sleepy hungover morning as Bob Hope and Jane Mansfield performed on the bed of a six by, the cannons were pulled up when VIPs showed up.
Loved those R and Rs, managed to extend mine to almost 30 days each, I had a friend at Tachicawa AB at the terminal, he kept stamping my orders, no aircraft available, it worked. Hope some of the guys get in touch with me, memories are fading, lets keep them a live. I have lots of pictures of the rock, lets get a K-53 web page, with pictures started. I will donate mine, they are already on Floppies, if anyone wants them, drope me an email.

Comments: Was stationed on the hill at K-18 (Kangnung) in 1953 and 1954, in Radar Maintenance.
Late in 1953, I was transferred to "Detachment 1", 606th--near Suwan. We set up a school to train ROKs in Radar Maintenance. Rotated home about April 1954.
Does anyone know what happened to that school? Often wondered what happened to Capt. Peterson. He was a retread WW II P-47 pilot--and a good guy.

Tried to email but it didn't go through, I'm doing a study of K-bases used during the Korean War and your reference
to K-52 caught my attention. I have a short entry describing it only as a
6,000 ft gravel emergency runway, that I would like to expand on. If you
know of any other units/incidents at this airfield I would be glad to hear
your account of them. Also, if you have electronic versions of these pictures and don't mind emailing them to me this would be great. I could also look at the tail designation on the
aircraft, if it wasn't destroyed, and tell you what ship or base the aircraft
came off of. After a preliminary look I did not see any AD-1 aircraft units
assigned to fly in the Korean War.
The earliest AD model flown had been the AD-2. But hey, the only difference
between AD-1s and AD-2s is 200hp, but if you can read in the picture any
letters on the tail it would greatly help us toward finding the pilots name.
Thanks for your time toward this matter.
