3rd Air Rescue Squadron

The 3rd Rescue (later, Air Rescue) Squadron, following the North Korean invasion, deployed detachments to Korea to perform search and rescue. Initially the squadron's primary mission involved intercepting and escorting distressed aircraft over the land areas of Japan and its adjacent seas. Combat operations and a changing tactical situation expanded the mission to include the rescue of stranded personnel behind enemy lines and aeromedical helicopter evacuation. The 3rd ARS was regularly augmented with personnel from the 2nd ARS (later redesignated 2nd Air Rescue Group) based in the Philippines. The aircraft available at the start of the Korean War forced the 3rd ARS to confine air rescue flights to short range rescue. These included the L-5, a highly maneuverable liaison aircraft used in helicopter escort, supply drops, and medical evacuation from small airfields; Sikorsky H-5 helicopters capable of operating in mountainous and rice paddy terrain; the obsolescent SB-17, a search and rescue version of the Flying Fortress bomber; and the SC-47 transport, which aided in searches and hauled critically needed supplies to outlying units. The squadron soon added, while phasing out the SB-17, the SB-29 and the amphibious SA-16. During the UN assault on Pyongyang in October 1950, it evacuated forty-seven injured paratroopers from drop zones at Sunchon and Sukchon. In March 1951, the squadron tested the new model H-19 helicopter, which proved invaluable in multiple evacuations and greatly extended the operational range for rotary-wing rescues. A significant innovation in the use of the helicopter was medical evacuation. For critically wounded soldiers at front-line aid stations, helicopter medical evacuations reduced a possibly fatal ten- to fourteen-hour road trip to a one-hour flight to a rear Mobile Army Surgical Hospital (MASH) unit. In December 1951, H-5s participated in a highly successful experiment by flying wounded soldiers directly from front-line aid stations to a hospital ship off the Korean coast. In November 1952, the 3rd elevated to group level, and squadrons replaced the detachments. From June 1950 to the end of hostilities in July 1953, it rescued almost 10,000 UN personnel, almost 1,000 from behind enemy lines, and over 200 from the water. For numerous commendable and heroic rescues, the 3rd ARS/ARG earned three Distinguished Unit Citations.

Comments: My father, Forrest Brown, from Indiana, was in the Air Force and joined Air Sea rescue in 1949. He was training, possibly in Okinawa, when the war broke out. He spoke little of his experiences during the war, but was wounded at least 4 times. He did have experience as a med tech and flew with pilots in the small helicopters at times, and he worked in MASH units. (Interestingly, in a book, The War in Korea, by Robert Leckie, there is a picture on the title page which shows my father sitting with a wounded man on his lap. That man's name was Shea or Shay. He died shortly after the picture was taken.)

My father passed away in 2009. My brothers and I each have some pieces of information he had mentioned, but none of us really knows his story. I am trying now to begin piecing things together.

I would appreciate hearing from anyone who might have known him.

I found an online video with images of Johnson AFB that has a wonderful collection of pictures from those days. I recognized the guard gate at entrance to base, the base housing 2 story duplexes, the swimming pool and much more. Check it out. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rmd0UOgFWT8

Comments: I was a FEAF combat cameraman shooting a35mm Eyemo camera at various
locations Korea June 1952 thru June 1953 including Chodo. I filmed picking up
several pilots from the sea by 3rd Reacue in H-19's. All my film went to DOD.
My assignments moved me around continually. I was at Chodo for brief periods
and then reassigned using the Turkish C-47' s for most trips, but once by H-19
the long long way around. I went on missions at Sea close to Chodo with pilot
and co- pilot above and me and a medic below. I filmed several pilots
parachuting down, and being rescued immediately by horse collar on metal rope
with 25lb weight.

As the H-19 lift was too limited by fuel for a combat pick-up on the mainland for
a medic and myself, I was to be excluded from mainland rescues. I brought in
from Yokota a 16 mm Filmo with a wide angle lens pointing downward, strapped
to the winch arm, showed the medic how to turn on the batteries switch, and set
up a simulated combat pick-up with me as the down pilot in front of the tents at
Chodo. I ran, thrust my arms through the horse collar. Was lifted by the cable,
and just as I was pulling myself into the ship, the whole thing let go. The chopper
was at about 20 feet, approaching 35-40 mph, and I fell., landing in brush and the
earth falling away. When they returned their first words were that they thought I
must be dead. I had finished paratrooper training, so I automatically tucked,
rolled an the brush and falling away terrain saved me. Nothing broken but a film
of the 25lb weight black and bluing my spine worked.

The failure was the metal rope throu the 25 Lb weight had a sleeve that was not
crimped...

It was reported by me and I am sure by the pilots. The film processed at Yokota
Lab was sent to DOD. When I read today the story by Chuck Carr of December
4, 2000, I was shocked. I always figured it must have been human error that the
sleeve was not crimped. But perhaps with the treasonous behavior to our
returning troops it may have been sabotage.

I later filmed 1st Indo-china war and 8 trips filming in Vietnam.

Although it is not complete, it contains a lot of information about a number of organizations, including the 3rd Air Rescue Group, and the following Air Rescue Squadrons: 1st Det, 3rd ARS; 2157th, 33rd, 36th, 37th, 38th, 39th, and 60th, as well as the 121st Evac Hospital.

I have virtually nothing about the 121st and am still looking.

I have recently found and ordered about 6 microfilms about the Air Rescue Service. Given the slowness of government document-providers,
I don't know when I'll have them.

Anyway, if you want to check out my site and possibly link it, please

Comments: I'm trying to locate Elmer Davis who served as a medic in Korea in the fall of 1952. He rode with Owen Clark, rescue helicopter pilot (my stepfather) on the rescue mission of downed pilot, Quinn Fuller in Nov. 1952. He was originally from the Portland, Oregon area.

We recently arranged a reunion of Owen and Quinn, but would sure like to complete the picture by contacting Elmer Davis.

Comments: I was at the airbase just outside yong dong po all three times we lost Seoul and most of korea. I can vividly remember watching the chinese cross the river and enter the airport grounds before we were permitted to leave. Air Rescue was the last to leave, except for the british, they were having tea and could not be interupted. We left, they were still having tea, the chinese less than a mile away.

Comments: Searching for the name of the AF Rescue unit and personnel stationed on Cho'Do Island in December 1952. Collecting information for a story about the attempted 1 1/2 hour water rescue attempt of !st Lt John B. Goery, USMCR attached to U.S.S. Badeong Strait CVE 116. Shot down, bailed out , landed in ocean. Two helipcopters with defective winches and a crash boat attempted rescue. Heavy shore battery fire and MIGS made effort very difficult. Pilot died from hypothermia.

Comments: I was assigned to the electronics section of the 36ARS at Johnson AB from April 51 to May 54. I believe we were fortunate to be part of a group
whose mission was live saving(vs. living taking).

It was a good time to grow up among good men.

Comments: I am the daughter of David L. Perry. I do know that he was a 1st. Lt. in the air force. Family lore tells me that he flew land/sea planes to recover injured and deliver to M*A*S*H units.

David was from Huntington, WV. If anyone remembers him, has photos, etc., please let me know. He never spoke of his duties (which I am sure is not an unusual occurance). He passed in 1979.
