Comments: I have a photo in .pdf showing the airmen and several officers in loose formation in front of the barracks waiting for the train to arrive. Many faces are clear for recognition. I have identified four and have them marked in the photo. They include me, Jim Welk in the helmet, Tom Botelho, and Charles Veltsos. Harris Fuller from Florida took the photo. The picture was taken in July 1950 an hour or so before the train arrived. I will be pleased to display it on this website and will send it to all by email. I was just released from the hospital for a shoulder operation and I'm not wearing my arm sling.

Comments: The passing of Leon James (Jim) Welk

Jim was first assigned to Lowry AFB in Colorado where he studied
aerial print making and camera work in 1948. He was then
assigned
to Langley Field in Virginia and to the 363rd Recon Tech Squadron
as a A/2c working at various tasks in the photo lab. He went
with
the 363rd when it was trained across the United States headed for
Japan and the Korean War on the SS Nelson M. Walker. In August,
1950, he went with his lab team from Fukuoka, Japan, to Taegu
where he excelled in producing aerial prints for General
Macarthur's planning for the landing at Inchon. When Seoul had
been recaptured and the airfield at Kimpo returned to friendly
forces, Jim went with his lab squadron to Kimpo again within
several miles of the front lines and was there when the 363rd RTS
was name-changed to 67th RTS. Jim earned his A/1c while in the
battle zone and he returned to the United States on the SS J.C.
Breckenridge. Jim served 15 months in the Far East with 13
months
on the ground in South Korea. He was honorably discharged in
1952
after 4 years of service to country.

Jim had many friends and I was one of them. I was with him at
Lowry, at Langley, on the train, on the troop ships, at Taegu and
Kimpo, and I know his family and his wife. I am proud to say no
finer man ever walked this earth.

Jim was surrounded by his family as he quietly passed into the
loving arms of Jesus on October 22, 2012 in Washington state.

Comments: I was a young Air Force Buck Sergeant stationed at Langley Field, on my second enlistment, when the Korean War started in 1950. We went by train all the way across the U.S. to Camp Stoneman in California. We went by ship from Fort Mason to Yokahoma, Japan. From there we went by train to Itizuki AFB in Japan. We flew our night Photo missions fron Itizuki over korea until about August 1950. Then we moved over to Teagu and remained there until it was cleared for us to move the unit up to Kimpo. The 162nd Tac recon Sq was part of the 363rd Tac Recon Wing until it was reorganized into the 67th Tac recon wing. The 162 tac Recon became the 12 tac recon sq.
Many of us returned home around Feb 1952 as replacements arrived. I retired from the Air Force in 1966 as a M/Sgt after 22 years.

My information is that the 12 Tac was deactivated in later years. I noted in this webb site that Reunions have been held at various places across the country in years past. Can anyone tell me when the next reunion will be held

Comments: Though I did not arrive in the 67th Recon Tech Sqdn until May 1951, I do have some knowledge about the 67th Tactical Reconnaissance Wing. It was formed 25 February 1951 using the 363rd (after changing it's name) as the nuceleus of the Wing as it was being formed at Taegu AB (K-2)
under the command of Colonel Karl "Pop" Polifka.
In August 1951 the Wing moved to Kimpo AB (K-14) and at this time the Wing was able to bring all supporting units together at one installation.

Comments: I was with 363rd at Langley when I got orders to go to Camp Stoeman in early July 1950, as a camera repairman. I was shipped to Itazuki Air Base to Gun camera lab. Within two or three weeks ,lo and behold I heard 363rd was in a compound in Fukaoka. Later i was transfered to Komaki , and the 45th Sgd. We
shipped to K-2 in Dec. 50 and later the 363rd arrived. I met alot of ol'e buddies. Eventually I think it became the 67th Rec. Tac, Sqd.I could be mistaken y ou know I'm getting older. In any event let me know.
