Comments: My father, Bob Ross, flew in RF-86Fs out of K-55 and Komaki. I have many pictures. The best one is of Mt Fuji from about 20,000ft. Red Morrison (Squadron Cmdr) chewed him out for using the airplane as a landscape camera. A copy is over my mantle today. My brother and never knew the missions were strategic recon until declassified. I do have a picture of seven RF-86s in formation and one of them is an Ashtray - all others are Hamakers. Bob Taylor led the flight. Jerry DePew was in the flight. Rudy Anderson was in the flight. Larry Garrison was in the flight and my dad flew #2 off of Taylor. Dad is still kicking around and enjoys telling grandkids stories.

brought in a 9x7 BW picture of 7 F-86 planes flying in formation. No one knew anything about the picture so I took it home to ID it. Out of the frame on the back it says
Official USAF photo 15th Tac Recon Sq. With a powerful magnifier the plane numbers are
FU 410--FU 823--FU 822--FU 857 --FU 529--FU 808--FU 451. I have no idea when the pict was taken or where. Can anyone ID the pilots by their plane numbers?
I can scan the pict or send it to you for your collection. Thanks for caring Kenro

Comments: My father, Lt. John Quentin (Tin) Welch was a pilot in the 15th Tactical Recon Squardron. He passed away in 2005. Recently my sister gave me a box of his Korean War mementos. One of the items is a wooden box, like a small briefcase, has a large number of colored slides of Tin's flights in Korea. Some are posed photos while others are of his F-80 in flight or stills of the Korean country side. On the inside lid is an inventory of the photos with corresponding numbers.

Were all pilots issued these? What would the USAF officially call such cases?

Thank You,
Brett Welch

Comments: I was assigned to 67th REMCO at Itazuke AB and when
it closed after Korea War finished I went to 15th
TRS, Komaki AB which had RF80 A and C, RT33 and RF86F
type aircraft. Later the RT33 were sent to the
Chinese AF. When it was transfered to Yakota AB we
had RF80A and C and F86F type aircraft. We lost Lt.
Stewart in September 1954 when he was making a test
flight in an old RF80A over Hachiochi, Japan. The
control cables broke when he attempted to pull out of
a dive! His son was born in Nagoya Army Hospital on
the same day as our son! Later, in 1955 we started to
get RF84F type airplanes. As I already over 4 years
in Japan I could not get anymore extensions on my
tour and was scheduled for rotation back to the CONUS
in October 1956. We retuned to the states on a troop
ship which had all the dependents of all Marine Corp
men as the Commandant said they could not be with
their husbands/fathers! We had good weather all the
way back to San Fransico, CA. I remained in the AF
until 1981 retiring with 30 years service.

Comments: I was a member of the 56th Weather Recon Squadron at Yokota Air Base. I was walking along the row of hangers on my way up towards headquarter. One of the hangers rear door was open and I saw a RF-86F. It was unusual because it had nose art. It had an Al Capp cartoon on it and the character was a little round figure with stubbs of hair on top and little arms and legs and named "The Bald Iggle." Does any one remember that bird. This was late in 1954 I think. I'm a model builder and I would like to build a model of it, but need the serial number. For your 15th Recon Squadron members the Air Force Museum now has a RF-86F on display. I believe it is in the markings of the 15th.

Comments: My dad, John Quintin Welch flew reconnaissance in Korea. He is presently in the final stages of cancer and will probably not make it through the summer. He has spoken to me on several occaisons of his experiences in Korea, has given me is squadron patch "Every Man A Tiger" and a piece of impeler blade from when he "threw the bucket" during a a mission. He does not know I am trying to get in touch with any of the men who were part of the squadron however, I thought it might be nice to try.

Tin was an actor and director of a local theatre in Portland OR and was in the film, One Flew Over the Cookoo's Nest. His great success came as owner of Welch's, an antique store in Portland which he ran with his wife Carol for many years.
God bless all of you who served so very long ago, it is an honor to have this opportunity to reach out.
