From November, 1946 to October, 1948. I was a radio technician working on BC 610 radio transmitters on a small island in Nagoya Bay. There were about 20 of us and we serviced the transmitters for CW and teletype transmissions on the 5th AF network. If anyone remembers more about that time and place please contact me by email. Comments: Arrived in Japan in February 1948 from Guam and was assigned to the 5th Air Force Headquarters Squadron . Nagoya Air Force Base. Later attended Radio School in Ozona and then was assigned to 1st Communications as a high speed Radio Operation . Bulleted at the Sumotomo Bldg; left Japan in June 1950 for discharge, but was extended one year and finally ended up in the 1st Fighter Wing at George Air Force Base at Victorville California as NCOIC of a Radio School.
I was discharged in September 1951 with the rank of Staff Sergeant.

Comments: I lived at Moriyama and worked in the Yamato Building. Took the bus to work. My barracks window faced the swimming pool, 1st floor. My roomie was John Aitken from Waymart, Pa. who recently passed away. I played on the base football team with Bob McClendon, a young Lt. out of North Texas State, who was with the 1st. Our team was loaded with ROTC guys and we lost only to Johnson AFB. That was in 1957. Would love to hear from any of the guys who served in Nagoya at that time.

when we rode the bus into Nagoya, we got off at the Yamato bldg. I really enjoyed my time at Komaki. There were several bars across the road from the base. We called that area flak alley. I recall that Nagoya had a nice zoo.

Comments: Spent ten months in 1946-47 in Japan (in Nagoya, after repeater
school between Yokohama and Tokyo). Lived on Japanese sea plane
base just outside of town, having moved there from the barracks a
few blocks from the Daichi Bldg. Had a great time, getting along
fine with the Japanese, who were in fact hospitable and retained
their self-respect. Things were getting a little hairy when the
8th Army came in to take over - but I left shortly after and don't
know how things developed.

Does anyone remember us as being in the Army Air Corps rather than
the later-named Air Force?

i guess there are still veterans who clearly remember
their service at this location. I remember being
reassigned to ground radio after crewing on C-119s at
Ashiya and C-47s at Itazuke. really a calm period in my
USAF history but i really enjoyed Nagoya and Obu's
favorite Key Club bar/hotel where i spent lots of
fantastic nights and lots of yen!!! I was there in 1955-
1956 as CHOP and then NCOIC/chief(only) clerk. Anyone
else remember being there?

Fifty years later I recognized very, very few places. Taller building made a big difference. Nagoya station greatly enlarge, the beautiful front completely covered.
Nagoya Hall and fountain still looked the same.

Comments: Was assisgned 1st Comm Sqdn from about June 1949 to late Sept 1951 Worked in the Carrier section. Was NCOIC the last 3 months of my tour. Have many memories of the time in Japan. I arrived in Japan October 14, 1948 and departed Japan Sept 22, 1951.

Sept 1952 was shipped out to Germany and ended up in the 1st Radio relay Sqdn. Came back to the states in late Oct 1953. Ended up later at Shaw AFB Sumpter, S. Car in the 727th AC and W Squadron. Discharged June 6, 1957.

IN 1954 WAS WALKING DOWN THE STREET OF NAGOYA PASSING THE YAMATO BUILDING. I WAS IN CIVILLIAN CLOTHES AND FAILED TO SALUTE GENERAL RAMEY, HONCHO OF 5TH AIR FORCE, AS HE WAS COMING DOWN THE STEPS OF THE YAMATO BUILDING, 90 DEGREES TO MY RIGHT. HE CALLED ME BACK AS I PASSED, CHEWED MY BUTT, TOOK OUT A PAD AND PEN AND WROTE DOWN MY NAME, RANK, AND ORGANIZATION. IT HAD ME WORRIED FOR DAYS, BUT NOTHING CAME OF IT.

There are still some of us who do, and we meet every odd-numbered year (as we are a bunch of odd numbers!). We have met in Biloxi, MS, St. Louis, MO, Rantoul, IL, Louisville, KY, Dayton, OH, Knoxville, TN and next year (2009) in October we will meet in Springfield, IL.

Hope some of you can make the reunion, but even if you can't, we'd be glad to hear from you. Give us some QRL.

Comments: Became NCOIC of the CW section in the Yamato bld in 1948. We lived in the Sumitoma bldg a couple of blocks away. Helped operate an amateur radio station on top of the field grade officers quarters on the same street. I also signed on as a radio operator aboard the FP47. It was a 108 foot passager and freight boat that was used in WWII and taken over the 5th AF as a recreational boat. I loved to sail in Toba bay. A friend had a small sail boat there and that is where I spent most of my off duty Summer hours.

Took my basic training at Sampson AFB,Geneva,New York from January 1954 to March.Then sent to F.E. Warren AFB,Cheyenne,Wyoming for Teletype School.
Sent to Nagoya,Japan via Troop ship.I served in the tape relay center in the Yamato building from April 1954 to July 1956.
I loved working the mid shift so I could go up on the roof of the Yamato building and watch the sun come up and hear the noodle cart man calling out his presence.
Loved Nagoya and Japan,especially the women.
Unfortunately I dont't remember any names of my coworkers,probable because I spent so much time in the EM club.I guess I was a pretty wild guy.

He passed away in 1984 and I am trying to put together a heritage album with the photos I have. Comments: was in signal center Yamato bldg.1946 thru 1948.....best time ever in the AF that station..recalled in 1950 to Barksdale, La...... and alot of the Nagoya comm. center there.....in fact I worked for a Sgt. StOnge there the very same one I gave my job to when I left Nagoya...Was an 805 crypto tech when I first got there....also ended up in Tokyo, Yokohama, hospitals after being swept off the road in a typhoon...main trouble I had was a skin condition fm the rice paddy so they cured it and sent me back to Nagoya.....

Comments: My grandfather, Richard "Cookie" Wagoner was a member of the 1st Communication Squadron of the 5th Air Force and served in Nagoya from at least 1946 to 1947. I believe he worked in the motor pool as I have a number of pictures there as well as his driver's permits. I would love to hear from anyone who may have known or worked with him as I believe you may be in some of his photographs or could identify locations in them. Unfortunately, he passed away in 2001 and never got around to labeling his pictures. I would appreciate any help anyone could give me.

We worked 2 swing shifts then 2 mid shifts then 2 day shifts I remember the old song by Bill Bailey What Goes On Behind The Green Door nWe used to turn the radio way up becouse our front door was green coming into the relay center.Looking for Bob Noll, S/Sgt.Young,M/Sgt.Rumfelt,Joe Banelli Etc. Comments: I also worked the torn tape relay in Nagoya. I lived at the old Japanese Radio School- Across from the Hospital, then moved to the Nagoya Air Station, later to Fuchu A.S. outside of Tokyo.
The old relay station was a fun place to work but was a royal pain when the teletype machines started breaking an everything started pilling up. I remember a Frank Weiss and a Philip Crumpler and good friend Bobby Smith.

Comments: I first lived in Nagoya and then Gifu Air Base and was the OIC of the Nagoya Relay Center in the
Yamato Buiding. I ended up being the Last Commander of the Yamato Building when it closed in 1957. I then was Assistant to the Base Commander at Gifu, Colonel George Shackley, with
whom I flew many of the same Combat Missions in the
381st Bomb Group, 8th Air Force, in 1944 over
Europe. He was the Commander of the 533rd Sq and
I was a Pilot and Flight Commander in the 532nd Sq.

In recent years we have seen each other at our 381st Bomb Group Reunions. I'm sorry to say Colonel Shackley died a few months ago.

I have seen some of the gang from the 1st Comm
at the Nagoya/Komaki Reunions.

I shall never forget my asignment in Japan in the
Nagoya Area.

Comments: I was the NCOIC of the CW group in the Yamato building before I replace M/Sgt. Hubbard as Comm Chief.

I then replaced M/Sgt. Ken Logan in October 1950 as the Sound Tech for the "Voice of the U.N" a C-47 that was equipped with powerful audio amplifiers. We originally flew missions to talk encircled North Korean soldiers into surrendering. We later changed our mission to fly over enemy troops along the Yalu at 11,000 feet broadcasting battle sounds to take the edge off of their death charges
