Comments: My great uncle LtJG Stanley Bugbee flew with VC-61 photo unit George during the Boxer's 1954 deployment. He was killed in a crash during the deployment. My mom was especially fond of her uncle and I would love to be able to hear any service related stories/anecdotes etc about her uncle from either this time period or prior. He has always been a family hero of mine though I never actually had a chance to meet him.

Where was the Navy Photo School that VC-61 was trained?

I found info on VC-62 and their training at NATTU Pensacola
Florida.

Did VC-61 attend the same school?

Thank you kindly for your help,

Comments: I am seeking information about photographs (or service
history) of my deceased father, Thomas Bassett. I know he
was based at NAS Miramar, that he was in Squadron 61
(photographic), and that he served during the Korean War.
I believe he took in-flight photos, and I remember at his
funeral hearing that several of the photos are still used
today. But I have no copies of them and don't know how to
find them. I have a copy of his discharge papers, which
is how I know as much as I know. I would be very
appreciative of finding more information from anyone who
can fill in the blanks or from hearing from anyone who
knew him. Dates of service 1951 -1955.

Comments: I have just had a book published on the F4U Corsair Operations in the Korean War. Currently, I am writing a hardbound./coffee table type book entitled: "U.S. Naval Aviation in the Korean War". It will contain squadron histories, personal comments from personnel and lots of color slides / photographs of the aircraft. If anyone that served in VC-61 has anything that might help me, please let me know.

Comments: I am trying to find information concerning my deceased father MARLON L. WATSON. I understand he was assigned to a squadron (1950-1954) onboard the USS Philippine Sea and flew recon for two tours during the Korean War and could have been a member of VC-61. I am told that on one particular mission that my dad's plane and another piloted by (Jim Vieley) where the only two planes to make it back to the ship. All the others where shot down. Maybe someone knew of my father and his squadron? Any information would be helpful!

Thanks,

Sherry Watson-Helm

Comments: I am trying to gather information about the air combat operations of USN squadrons in Korea. In case of VC-61 I am especially interested in encounters by Det. 3 w/ CVG-11 off the Philippine Sea during the November 1950 strikes on the Yalu bridges. VC-61’s Historical Report mentions an encounter with MiG’s by its aircraft 10 November. Any further info on this encounter or any others, by VC-61 or any squadron in Philippine Sea/CVG-11, first hand or not, would be helpful.

We had five F9F Panthers, one of which was an experimental silver Panther, that later became the "blue-tail" fly when the tail was damaged and replaced by a conventional blue tail. We were on the line off Korea when the truce was signed.

Comments: VC-61 was a Composite Squadron whose mission was photographic reconnaissance. After the outbrak of the Korean War, the squadron was assigned six Corsair photo planes and departed for Korea aboard the USS Philippine Sea on 3 July 1950.
After a few months with Corsairs and F6F photo planes, the squadron got jets - the photo version of the F9F Panther, in Oct., 1950, and the F2H-P Banshee after that.
