Comments: Grace, this issue did not come up with Herman and myself. I am very white and he black. however during that time aboard ship there was race problems. Every one for the most part stayed with there own race be it white, black, hispanic or phillipino. I am short and stocky, herman big strong and tall. He did not allow other blacks or whites to intimidate or harass me in any way. More than one time did he interveine and take care of business when it was required. Smart people left him alone. I do not know if any of this will matter to you but I should have done this along time ago. It is my memories after fourty seven years. Sorry no photos. He was a good friend and I truleydo miss him and I think a lot about him when I have memorys of the flying P.

Comments: Grace Alston, I served with your father aboard ship. He was a true trusted friend. He was a big man, tall and strong. I worfked with him mess cooking . His death was painfull to me andI still miss him. I have PTSD as a result of that unfortunate accident. We recieved a book after our Viet Nam tour and his photo may be in that book. I cannot find mine or I would try to locate any photos that exist. Other vets on the P book mayhave this book. I have no contact with any of my former ship mates. Bill Hartley was a good friend of mine and He passed away now and he knew your father. If I recall it right we were off the San Diego coast practicing for service in the Gulf Tonkin. It involved night work with red lights which we would be operating with in Viet Nam. The accident was on station number two where Herman was assigned to work. I do not know where the nick name came from but he was known as grease. He was allways smiling and allways good natured. He liked women and talked about them all the time. We share the same living compartment together deck department about eighty souls on bunks.Very crowed and cramped. We were assigned to make two hundred and eighty some hambergers a very mundane and boreing task. As i was working a round ball of hamburger smacked me in the head. I looked up and Grease was smiling and laughing at me.I returned the favor and my ball missed went out the port hole, a very small window and cracked Chief Pizzo right in the head.

Comments: Does anyone remember my father, LTCDR. Robert J.(Bob)Lang? He was stationed aboard the USS Passumpsic in the 1950s, he retired in 1957 or 1958 after a 21 year career. I was just a little girl. My sisters and I grew up in San Diego, and I can remember our mom dressing us up to meet my dad's ship when it came in to port. My parents divorced, my father remarried but died in 1976, my stepmother and my mother are gone also, and so all of his things are lost to me. I'd love to know more about him during his career. I'm a volunteer at the USS Midway Museum and recently dedicated a bench on board to honor him. He would be 90 years old now. If anyone has any memories of him I would so appreciate hearing from you.
Thank you!
