Comments: I recently purchased a cigarette lighter at an estate auction in Tappahannock, VA with From the Duke and the emblem of the USS Independence on one side and Captain Hal Lang, USS Kankakee on the other. Also among the items purchased is a belt buckle with a oiler depicted as well as several medals, including the Bronze Star and several WWII related medals. Noting the Independence was commissioned around 1960, I suspect CO Lang was aboard the Kankakee in the early 1960's. I'm trying to find when CO Lang was aboard the Kankakee and even, find a good home (free) to some sort of museum, etc. I may be contacted directly at ISeaSmith@aol.com

Comments: I just found this site and remember that my Dad, who died in 1996 and was class of 1930 USNA, was Captain of the Henrico [and the Kankakee] in the '50s. I remember dependents going on the ship to drydock in Hawaii in 1954 when I was in grade school. There were 1500 marines on board and as the captain's daughter I had such a "safe" time at sea ... If anyone knew Dad, I would enjoy corresponding and learning more about him.
