Comments: The JSA was a hell of an assignment because of the soliders picked to serve there. And with all the hardships came unforgettable memories like beers at the 'Sanc, the Fillippino Band sing-along's on Friday's, missions to the Swiss and Swede Club and golf tournaments on the most dangerous course in the world. Hope to get back there again someday.

Comments: I just viewed all the posts of those that served with the JSA.Most of you served long after I left and a great many changes took place, some of which are hard for me to believe. I've seen pictures from the 60s thru the 90s and I'm amazed to see how the conference area and the various ckpts (guard shacks) have changed, especially Ckpt # 3 at the "Bridge of No return" Only one person served partly during my tour ( Bill Moody ). We were together for 6 months in ' 56, then he rotated home. I was there from Dec. ' 55 to April ' 57. At that time it was JSF (Joint Security Force) and out of the 80 personnel, 50 of us were 8th Army MPs. That number was split between the Security and Escort sections. I was in Security and then moved up to Escort in June ' 56 and remained there 'til my tour was up. It was a good group of guys and we got along very well. I often wonder where they are and what there doing now. I've posted on several sites in an effort to make contact with them but it's been to no avail, except for Moody. I did have a mini reunion this summer with three buddies but that was arranged via phone. I can be seen on:
www.atourofduty.homestead.com/JSF.html. I would like very much to hear from someone from my era. My best to all of you that served "In Front of Them All". God Bless !!

Upper Han River Valley, a quanset encampment on the shore of a bend in the river. The highest mtn
in So. Korea, (Bak Un Tay - or - Pay Goon Day) was
nearby and we hiked it often from 1957 to 1958. The engineers had built a make-shift dam on a small tributary, and the Army guards and Air Force station operators used it as a swimming hole during the wet season. Had a dragon mascot on

Al Smith and I were the first Navy types to be stationed at the JSA following Admiral Joy's negotiation of the Armistice Agreement, and it was interesting to see the reaction of the many Army and civilians when they visited the Joint Security Area and saw two Navy types conducting the tours. Hi, i am curently in the UNCSB-JSA also known as Camp bonifas. Im here till apirl of 2003. Its great reading all these past stories of other people that have served in the JSA and hearing what it was like before. This is truley the place to be in korea. The missions are realy and you fell this sence of pride knowing you are here protecting south korea from the north. There is not much to do on the off time and you dont have the freedome that the others have in the camps down south, but i know i will have way better stories to tell then they will of korea. since ive been here i meet drew cary, bo derick, wayne newton, miss USA, and some of the dallas cowbowy cheerleaders. I just missed meeting president bush and ozzy osborn in febuary of 2002. If you have anything you would like to know about the JSA or even ask what has changed feel free to send me an E-mail.

I feel certain that those of who served at JSA were all better soldiers for the experience and those of us who were part of the operation will carry those memories for a long time. My kids laugh when they see pictures of me from another age, when we could see our feet and run forever. Serving in hostile environments builds a bond that lasts forever and makes you smile easier years later.

Comments: There will never be a duty station like it again! The comraderie was unbelievable. I almost had a second family with the guy's up on the "Z". I never went 'down range' alone. We worked together and partied together. We had pride in our unit and mission. We were the envy of all of U.S. troops in Korea. NOBODY messed with us! The 'Roks' were always pissed at us because we wouldn't refer to them as "Rok soldiers",(they weren't..they were Katusa's). The JSA was clearly one of the better times of my life in the service. I'm not sure whether it was by accident or design, but the U.S. Army actually did something right in putting that unit together. I will never forget Lt. Burns "...I love you men!" I salute ALL JSA veterans. We were clearly "In Front of Them ALL!"

Guard Truck was ambushed before I got there and that created the two platoon scenario. The ones on duty at night had to arrive in JSA with enough daylight left for the day platoon to clear the DMZ before dark Next day, the day platoon could not go up until sufficient daylight. Needles to say, night shifts during the winter were extremely long as well as cold.Lots of rock throwing and fist fights during that time. Wouldn't change the experience for anything. Comments: The comradery was without equal..The memories of the craziness of Moose night and "Mash" just being released in the movie quansit hut are descriptive enough of the good times at JSA. The memories have lasted me for 31 years.

I love the websites on JSA. Maybe now, people will see how those assigned there are truly under the real and constant threat of death without the benefit of being given the benefit of defending themselves. I am sure it is better now than it was when I was there. We were truly "out front" by ourselves and our life expectancy was 2 minutes should the KPA decide they wanted to kill some Americans. Most of us were 18 and 19 against the KPA's most seasoned troops.

It has been diagnosed that my PTSD started while there. The constant staying awake on the guard shacks while the Senior Katusa slept didn't matters any. It has also been found that I was sprayed with agent orange and agent blue on numerous occasions while working CP2 during 2nd D's predawn sprayings of the Z, right up to our checkpoint. All this has affected me over the years and has led to cardiac disease, high blood pressure and resulting in Heart Attack and Stroke.
I now carry my medication in a large gym bag.

I know there are those who have been experiencing health problems from their assignment during my time at JSA. Feel free to talk with me about it.
I have met numerous OP Collier and Ollette, 2nd D troops who are currently undergoing treatment for the same things I am, for the same reasons.

I loved JSA...It didn't love me back, over time.
I will never forget the special people who served with me "In front of them all".

Comments: BOY THIS IS A GREAT SITE. I JUST FINISHED READING MOST OF THE MESSAGES, BOY IT TAKES YOU BACK ! MY NAME IS DAVID COLES I 2ND PLT FOR A VERY SHORT TIME and THEN MOVED TO THE TOC. I HAD A GREAT TIME THERE AT KOREA'S ANSWER TO DISNEYLAND. I DON'T KNOW IF IT WAS THE LANDMINES IN THE SUMMER, THE BUSSES BACKFIRING UP NORTH OR THE ROK'S PLAYING WITH CANDY RAPPERS ON PATROL, BUT THERE WAS ALWAYS SOMETHING TO KEEP THE PUCKER FACTOR UP. THOUGH I DON'T THINK I'LL EVER TRULY GROW UP, I DON'T THINK YOU CAN BE "IN FRONT OF THEM ALL" AND NOT GROW UP A LITTLE. I HOPE ANYONE FROM THE 87-88 GROUP WILL E-MAIL IF YOU GET A CHANCE.

Unit: JSA 78/79 ANIMAL

Service or Relationship: United Nations Veteran - Korea

Comments: I was with JSA in 78/79, with 1st Plt. Animals, (Water Buffalo). 1st Lt. Gaye was the Unit commander. I got there straight from boot camp. Seems that they were having trouble finding guys with out an Artl.15. My being there turned out to be so positive and all the guys there were so stract, at least on post. I think that our platoon names Animals, Mad Dogs, Renegades, Barbarians was for our actions “Down Range”. For me I had no other military experience to compare my time at JSA with. Later when I extended my tour in country I went to the 1/38 Inf. at Cp. Hovey. (At the time you could not extend and stay at JSA. Don't know if it is the same way now.) It was then that I could truly appreciate the quality of the guys I served with. At the time I thought all units were that sharp. (They should been.)

I was also with the 38th during our tour at the “D” guard posts when South Korean president Park Chung Hee was assassinated. I just figured that this is it and god please let them find me with a bunch of dead KWA around me. Good thing was that old Kim il song was just as surprised as us.

One good thing was that it started me off on the right foot. My standards were always higher than the unit I was assigned to. I ended up doing 2 more tours in Korea, and one with 101st and one with the 4th Div. stateside.

I'm now in Chicago with my wife of 20 years and 2 sons, working for an online company.

I still miss that place. One day I will probably go back and take the tour, (Only this time I may give the KPA the Finger they so richly deserve) and buy some Merry Mad Monk trinkets and play a round of golf.(Ka-boom)

If you ever visit the Military.com chat room I’m Opfor6. There is a JSA unit page there also, run by SGM Laurence Williams. My page is dedicated to Opfor units.

If Wanson (Wonzingy), Perry, or Cassey see this you now have my e-mail.

JSA In front of them All and Animals lead the way.
