Comments: Attended the 2007 reunion in Las Vegas with my wonderful Wife, who I consider as also serving at the JSA (She did it Stateside while I did it in Korea). The guest speakers were iceing on a function that could not have been better. Jim Mazour and his beautiful Wife deserve tremendous credit for setting it all up. I was the Platoon SGT of the Crew on duty when the Pueblo was released and getting to meet F. Carl Schumacher was a special privilege. The same with LTC Anastasia and Mr. Tchue.
I spent 22 years in the Army, the last 12 as a CID Agent, and the 13 months at JSA was the most memorable of my whole career. It was even fun crossing the one lane bridge over the river, the dirt road, moose night, etc. Your a great bunch of people who should be very pround.

Comments: Just a quick reminder that today, 18 August 2007, is the 31st anniversary of the "Pan Mun Jom Axe Murder" incident, which claimed the lives CPT(P)Arthur Bonifas and 1LT Mark Barrett.
Let us all take a moment out of our busy lives today to give some reflection to the ultimate sacrifice these two men made on "Freedom's Doorstep". Lest we forget.

Comments: As I was one of the JSA TOC clerks on duty on the fateful evening of 28 August 1982, the night that Joseph T. White decided to defect to North Korea, I have always been interested to see if I could find anything in print that was related to the story. I have done several internet searches over the past few years and have come up with next to no information at all about the incident. Recently, I tried a "GOOGLE" search and came up with a couple of positive hits. If there's anyone out there interested in White's defection to North Korea, Google Search the following: "Joseph White's Walk In The Dark". IN FRONT OF THEM ALL

Comments: Just found this site, its great. Hello to all who remember the JSA and Camp Kittyhawk with fond memories from Spec4 Hall of the 2nd Platoon and later the Tour Guides (lol). Remember the ladies that ran the barber shop, going to sleep with the sound of propaganda sounding almost 24 hours a day every day, the trip up to the QRF site and on to the JSA itself, etc. I remember that just before I got there a KATUSA was killed in a training accident, the first issue of BDU's in Korea, the accident in the dmz when the jeep rear-ended the duce and 1/2, and all that preparation for Pres. Reagan to visit in the fall of 83. It was the only tour I had that felt like a real job - that mattered. everywhere else was just practice.

Comments: Over the years I have read letters from fellow DMZ Brothers talking about different health problem they think are linked to their DMZ service. It is very clear that we will never get anything until we band together to get what we justly deserve. As indivuals we hit a wall fighting a system that wants to forget about us! We have all got the same answers about our records or we are not a big enough burden to Society. we are being judged by people who do not understand the unique situation we were in. They tell us thirty years after the fact that we were exposed to Agent orange then say we weren't. one docter says you have PTSD the other says you do not. I am interested in comment from my brothers from JSA and 2nd Div about this and any solution to the problems. In front of them All-72 to 74, Rock of the Marne 77-78

Comments: I just found this site, glad I did, sure brings back alot of memories. Even after 19 years in the Army and all the units I have been in, the JSA was one of the best. I served at Camp Bonifas from March 1990 through the end of April of 1992. I was in 2nd PLT and then became a tour guide. I remember most everyone who was there at that time, especially, Layton, Traylor, Mawby, Hadden, Sowers, Vanderpool, Padgett, Garrett, O'Brien, Brown, Lee Soo Young, Collins, Fields, Choi, Hazelwood, the guys in the C and E shop and too many more to list. I am still in the Army at present. Anyone who would like to walk down memory lane drop me a line and we can chat about Itaewon, Sonjuri, Thunder Runs, The dancing girls at the Sanctuary on Tuesday nights, DMZ patrols in sub zero temperatures, life at BRF and the QRF buildings, The ride on the "Seoul Train" from Munsan to Seoul, nights at the Dragon Hill, MTV Club, East-West Club, King Club, Nashville Club, Twilight Zone, The Heavy Metal Club, The Paradise Club in Sonjuri, trying to catch the bus back across Freedom Bridge before it closed for the night, and rationed orange juice in the chow hall. If you were in the JSA at any time, you will never forget it. It was one of the best and most rewarding assignments in the Army. Few had to endure what we did living at Camp Bonifas, but the friendships and the things we learned there will forever be etched in our minds. "In front of them all" then, now, and forever.

Comments: This assignment was the greatest assignment in my over twenty years of service. There were many events that occured during this time but one of the most significant to me was that of a Private who had defected from the Czech contingency and left for the U.S. He had been put on clean-up detail at the NNSC Building which was along the row and left unattended by his Czech captain, CPT Lubomir Kopaj. The private simply walked out of the building on our side and continued walking past check points until finally stopped and asked in broken Russian by one of the Security Platoon members what the guy was up to. The private wanted to go to Ohio where he had relatives living. After being questioned at the Monestary "O Club) he was taken to Seoul. I never knew if he actually made it to Ohio but would like to think that he did.

William Schweizer wrote on March 31, 2007

Comments: I came across a disturbing article this morning (31 March 2007)on the Comcast Home Page News headlines. The article was in regards to the cover-up of the death of Pat Tillman in Afghanistan in April 2004. It was an AP article and was written by SCOTT LAIDLAW, titled "GENERAL TRIED TO WARN BUSH ABOUT TILLMAN".
To paraphrase the article, General Mchrystal sent a memo to General Abizaid stating the following: "I felt that it was essential that you received this information as soon as we detected it in order to preclude any unknowing statements by our country's leaders which might cause public embarassment if the circumstances of Cpl. Tillman's death become public", that is LTG McChrystal's own words from this article.
The article goes on to say that LTG McChrystal is the highest ranking officer accused of wrong doing in the Tillman death cover-up.
I would like to state that when I arrived at JSA in January 1982 LTG McChrystal (then Captain McChrystal) was the JSA Operations Officer (S-3) at that time. I would also like to go on record and state that LTG McChrystal (CPT McChrystal) was one of the finest officers I ever had the privelege to work for. As far as I'm concerned, LTG McChrystal's word is as good as gold.
If The General said he tried to warn his superiors about the true facts of Pat Tillman's tragic death as possibly the result of a friendly fire incident, then that is exactly what he did. I believe LTG McChrystal, and I have absolute faith in the man. I only wish some of the other officers I served with had the same fortitude and integrity that LTG McChrystal (CPT McChrystal) exemplified.
I'm a nobody in this world, but it pains me greatly to hear of a man I have the highest regard for being, as far as I'm concerned, falsely accused of wrong doing and trying to cover up the circumstances of Pat Tillman's death.
I wish nothing but the best for LTG Mchrystal and he will always have my highest respect and all the support that I can give the man.

Comments: According to a June 04, 2006 SEATTLE TIMES newspaper editorial article on Korea, it reports that the first female US Army soldier has been assigned to the Joint Security Area unit. She is Captain Tamara Yolo of Wapato, WA, and Yolo is working as a Panmunjom tour briefer. Plans are moving ahead for the JSA/Panmunjom Veterans Reunion, which will be held on April 27 and 28, 2007 at the Palace Station Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada. Comments: I thoroughly enjoyed my time at Camp Bonifas and was honored to serve with some of the best soldiers and officers I have ever met. LTC Miller and MAJ Stanton were top notch and they kept us running smooth. It is sad to hear us leaving the JSA but I wil lalways remember the great service and great memories from my year in the JSA.
I respect all who have ever bunked in the JSA and heard the late night propaganda and endured a Korean winter.

Comments: JSA REUNION UPDATE: Keep watching this website and Guestbook for updated information on the planned 2007 2007 JSA/Panmunjom Veterans Reunion in Las Vegas, Nevada. I still need volunteers to help in locating guys from the 1950s, 1990s and 2000s decades (1960s, 1970s and 1980s decades are covered). I hope to have a hotel and dates information by next month.

Comments: It was a great time and place to serve in the mid-eighties. I can't believe it has been almost twenty years since I served in 1st PLT.
My 14 year old nephew is wearing my JSF Co. Tanker jacket with the UN Globe embroided on the back and can't believe I was that skinny that he can fit into it.
All those guys in 1st PLT, LaCroix, Gunter, High, SFC Kohler, LT Currie, Pinkley, Nelson, and all the rest...truly a wonderful bunch of people that I always hope to run into again!

Comments: I was stationed to 1st platoon in January of '88. It was a very "unique" experience. I don't have much cause to go back and revisit my life there at JSA often. But I am trying to fill some gaps of information about things there: 1) The ROK soldier who was on guard in CP 1 the night he decided to commit suicide. Whatever happened with that whole story? 2) I came across an article in People Magazine in 1993 or 1994 about Staff Sgt. Barnett, who was temporarily in 1st Platoon in '88. By the mid 90s he was being court-martialed at Fort Bragg for the shooting death of a female officer. What was the verdict? and #3) Sgt David E. Geary was a squad leader in 1st Platoon in '88. In 93 or 94 I saw him shown on "NBC Dateline" during a news item on cops being arrested for police brutality across the country. He and his partner beat an unarmed black suspect to death, I think.
Hope all you remaining Animals are staying out of trouble.
