His boot camp graduation was in April 1959, Company 55, according to "The Keel" that I snuck out of his office temporarily! I am trying to contact the people he graduated with from that boot camp group. Specific names he has mentioned that I remember were Davis, Arthur; Julk, Charlie; Marcum, Wayne; Felton, Charles; Skarzynski, S; and Woodard, W.B. These are the names I could immediately remember his mentioning, although there were/are others I cannot recall. If you know anyone who was a boot camp graduate of this group, please contact me via email. This is part of a surprise I am planning for his 70th birthday. Any help you can provide I would greatly appreciate!

Comments: I was just a seventeen year-old,guy from Phoenix, Arizona whose Naval Reserve unit was "called up" during the Korean era. I entered Boot Camp at the Naval Training Station (San Diego)in June of 1952. Our Chief Petty Officer was Chief Castillo and our Company was #440. Doug Patterson was in our Company as was a guy named Philpenny. Chief Castillo appointed me as Recruit CPO. Although we did win the Excellency Trophy, I did not think I was a very good leader. I went on to be trained as an Aviation Machinist Mate; Aerial Gunnery at Ream Field (Mexican border); Naval Air Training Station in Norman, OK.; O and R on Coronado Is and finally to Litchfield Naval Air Facility outside of Phoenix, Ariz.
Trying to run down old friends from those days; and a 1952 (August or Sept.) Boot Camp Graduation photo of our 440 Company on the grinder before the reviewing stand, being presented with the Excellency Trophy. The photo was also in a book published by Abe the Newsboy in 1952.
My very best wishes to any of my forner buddies.

Comments: I wonder if anyone has a copy of the "yearbook"-type of publication we ordered and were supposed to receive at the end of recruit training? I never got mine. Supposedly, a commercial photographer followed us on occasion, keeping a record of our training. (marching on the "grinder", obstacle course, fire-fighting, nomclature, going to and from classes and the messhall, etc....)We all paid for it in advance, and I never got mine. I still remember Jim Lumberman from NC, Ralph Sweet from Kentucky, Jim Dunnigan from Gettysburg, Ensign Mills, etc...Thanks Phil Werntz, Manassas, Va. This was the summer of 1954
