After the war he re-enlisted for duty in Vietnam (he said to get away from his then wife lol), and eventually settled down in the Los Angeles area. Naval Training Center from August and graduated in November of 1952. Retired in
1972 living in Sacramento after moving from San Jose. Was at Moffet field deployed
to Aduk with P-3 unit
before being transferred to San Diego F-4 to serve on the Kittyhawk. Was also
stationed previously in Yorktown, Penscola, Mayport, and was ships company
aboard the USS Ranger 61. went to various school and enjoyed my service experience.

Comments: I was sworn into USN at Macon, GA, May 1, 1952. Traveled by train to Los Angeles and bus to San Diego. Assigned to Training Company 0372. Names of fellow company members include: Dooley, Driver, & Wilbanks; would like to recall names of many of the company. Our training leader was H.W. Beddow, GMC. Afer Basic, I attended air gunnery and aviation machinist schools at NAS Whidbey Is, WA. Assigned to VR21, Barbers Point, Oahu. Finished service tour in late 1955 at VR-2, NAS Alameda, CA, which flew JRM -1 Mars, flying boats, Alameda to Hickham Field, Pearl Harbor, and return, hauling military personnel and cargo. I was a machinist & load-master for RD-5, RD-6, and JRM-1. I also typed the passenger and cargo manifests for flights departing during my watches.

Comments: Any one out there remember Company 324 , at the Great Lakes Ill. NTC, Aug. to Nov., 1948?
The D.I. was Quartermaster Chief Oliver, a former POW of the Japanese in WW-II. We were
shorted white socks, etc. in our clothing issue. Our Recruite Chief was kept at Great Lakes
for years, to testify at court-marshals for the Company against wrong-doers. I don't know if
the case ever went to trial or not. Several guys in the Company were from Indiana

I am striving to write a memoir of my 84-year-old father and mother. My father is a Navy Vet who began his journey in February 1952 in San Diego. He ended up, I believe, in company 181 and later MSB Division One. I am looking for some folks that I can discuss dad's journey with so that I can make sense out of something that is unfamiliar to me ..... so that I can write about it! :-)

P.S. He mentioned he went to boot camp and was in the Drum and Bugle Corps there but stayed longer for more boot camp training, deciding to join the fleet instead for electrical training and excitement in minesweeping!

It was like an explosion after graduation, I believe I was the only one returning to San Diego for Fitter Pipe Class A .Ships and Commands after; use Mountrail APA 213,USS Cabildo LSD-16, USS Bayfield, N.S. Adak, USS T.E. Chandler DD-717, N.A. North Island, USS Prairie AD-15, Dive School, DC, USS Coucal ASR-8, USS Chanticleer ASR-7,

Comments: I have a photo of myself and two young sailors taken at the end of boot camp at Great Lakes,Ill.The two sailors in the photo with me were from Al. I never saw or heard from them after boot camp.We started boot camp in May 1950,about a month prior to the start of the Korean Conflict.These two young men grew up in the Tuscaloosa Al. area.one was named Billy Joe Stone,the others last name was Sumerell or something similar.Chances are that they have passed on.I remained in the Navy ,became a Chief Gunners Mate,and retired a Chief Warrant Officer ,Weapons.From boot camp I went aboard the USS New Jersey BB62 and served until December 1953.My next duty station was the USS Haas DE424 out of Algiers,La.,then to Naval Training Center,Treasure Island for instruction.my next duty station was the USS Hopewell DD681,then to USS Frank E Evans DD754.,then one year aboard the USS Wilkinson DL5.I then went to Fleet Gunnery School as Instructor,that is where I became a Chief Gunners Mate.My next duty station was the USS Tappahannock AO43.I was Chief in charge of the Weapons Dept,and was also the ships Chief Master at Arms.The ship had a wonderful crew.I became a Warrant Officer aboard Tappahannock . Next duty station was Gunnery School,Great Lakes. At one time or another I headed each of the school branches there.I spent most of my time as Head of C School.I enjoyed the Staff and students.I had some great Chiefs there.My next duty Station was US Naval Ship Repair Facility,Subic Bay.I was head of Weapons Branch (Code 291) Combat Systems Division,Planning Dept.I decided to retire from there.I meet many good Enlisted and Officer persons while in the US Navy. would like to hear from anyone I served with or whatever.I love North Florida. went to San diego for boot camp, from JULY. 1951 for three months. I would like to know who do I contact to get his graduation picture, you know the one with the American flag behind him.

DEAN HERMANCE is his name and he is in the Veterans home. I am his wife and this would be an honor to show him the picture he lost so many years ago.

I was stationed at Memphis, TN (Metalsmith School), Norman, OK, and then ended up as Petty Officer 3rd Class at NAS Kingsville, TX. Served aboard the FLORIKAN ASR 9; made 2 trips to WestPac (Yokosuka, Japan) in

1955 and 1957. Looking for Shorty Howerton, GM3 at that time. Would like to hear

from any of the FLO-CREW that served aboard her during those periods of time.

I was an SN/RD3 at that time. Transferred off the FLO in May of 1958.

went to uss chara for only 3 mo.Too many people so
transferred to flt. acts on the LCUs in sasebo japan
for 2 yrs.was great duty with good friends.
Finished my hitch on uss seminole aka 104.
