Comments: I am looking for any information or stories of my grandfather, Louis "Doc" Rodriguez who was stationed in the Kapyong area of Korea as a medic. He was drafted in 09/1951 in Corona, Ca. and was assigned to L Co. 160th Inf. Regt. 40th Infantry Division before being deployed to Korea where he was assigned to the 52nd Medical Battalion. Unfortunately my family has no records of medals or awards my grandfather recieved if any while in Korea other than the ones awarded for war time operations during the conflict. Any information is appreciated. He attended his Medical Training in San Francisco, Ca. if that helps anyone. Louis "Doc" Rodriguez passed away on 01/08/10.

Comments: I was curious if the following information might ring a bell with some
Korean Vets. If anyone recognizes the places which I am describing, I
would very much appreciate your letting me know. Or for that matter,
supply your own memories of that time if you served in the 3rd Bn.
I also need to mention that I was known as "Frenchy" to the other men,
for the obvious reason that before I was drafted I had recently
immigrated from France and my thick accent was a dead giveaway of
my origins. I was also known because of my reputation as an artist. My
cartoons were published in the Stars and Stripes and I also drew the
portraits of many of the men who were in the 3rd Bn.
I served with the 5th RCT from November 1951 to January 1953, when
I was finally rotated back to the States. I was assigned to HQ Co 3rd Bn
Operations as operations draftsman and then as operations chief.
Major Wagonhurst was in charge of the operations unit.
I saw combat in the winter of 1952. The MLR was in the vicinity of
Kumsong. After 3 months we came off the line and set up camp near
Sangdong. Later on we moved on to Inje and eventually the 5th RCT
went back to the front line in the "Punchbowl" area; our position was
on Hill 1024, facing Chinese infantry units.
Like many veterans from the Korean War, those memories are still fairly
vivid, even after more than half of a century. It was the type of
experience that one doesn't easily forget. Incidentally I wrote a
memoir about my experiences in Korea, a book titled "Frenchy" which
is available online at Amazon.com. I included in my book
reproductions of drawings which I made while I was with the 5th RCT.
All the best to all the Korean War Vets.

Comments: In his Memorial Day speech at the Tomb of the Unknowns in Arlington Cemetary, President Obama talked about honoring our World War II veterans, our Vietnam veterans and the veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan. But, never mentioned the veterans of the Korean War. It's as though the Korean War never existed!
My father served in the Korean War on the front lines. He was the guy who carried the 50 mm BAR with an assistant carrying the ammo and the tripod. Last guy out of the trenches -- running backward. He witnessed horrific sights that he never spoke about! And he was 17 years old.
He's now 76 years old, has Alzheimer's, was diagnosed with PTSD and has a pacemaker/defibrillator. Yet after 2 long years of dealing with the VA, it seems he isn't entitled to veterans benefits. I'm now having difficulty getting his medals re-issued.
I was in Washington, DC over the Easter week. I walked to the Korean War Memorial to take pictures so my father could see the memorial and I also wanted to be certain my father's name was on the Korean War Honor Roll.
I was greatly disappointed to find that the computers were down and I never had a chance to verify my father's name on that honor roll. I have not yet been able to view that honor roll to be certain my father's name is included.
The First Lady has dedicated her time to many worthy causes one of which is military families and their needs. She wants to be certain the families of military servicemen and women are taken care of. That care must be inclusive of the veterans of not only Iraq, Afghanistan, Vietnam and World War II but also the veterans of the Korean War.
Is it possible that the reason I am experiencing great difficulty getting benefits for my father and in securing his medals, is that the Korean War is still not considered a war? The Korean War must be recognized as a "war" not a "conflict". And, we must not ever forget the veterans who served in that war! They are just as entitled to honor and benefits as the veterans of World War II, Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan!

Comments: My father William Ruble was a member of the 5th Regimental Combat Team in "C" company from June or July of 1951 until about August or September of 1952 when he was taken from the front line and sent to Koji Island. The exact months are unclear in his mind. Several men from his unit were plucked off the line and sent to Koji Island. He is unsure how many men were taken off the line from his unit but he thinks less than 6.
He remembers the young faces of the men he served with in great detail but the names slips his mind. Dad was a short man about 5'-6" tall, with black hair. He talked about his platoon sergeant from Louisiana a man dad respected and admired greatly. Dad was a corporal in his unit. Dad said he remembered a man who was either a trainer or a sparing partner of a famous boxer in his unit but is unsure what the mans name was.
Dad never returned to his unit after Koji Island. After Koji Island duty dad went back to the states and helped train new men going to Korea for a brief time and then came home.
When I asked my dad what he remembers the most about Korea he would reply. The winter there was damn cold and the summer there was damn hot.
Dad came home to West Virginia where he was born and raised and still lives to this day. If anyone knew my dad and remembers him he would love to talk to you. He would love to know his buddies are still out there and doing well.
Thank You

Comments: Hi: I'm seeking anyone who knew Earl Miller (see below). Any info you can provide will be helpful for his hometown local hist. soc. vet exhibit. He has no close family surviving. Thanks in advance. *MILLER, EARL K. Citation: The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to Earl K. Miller (RA23948945), Private, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy of the United Nations while serving with Company G, 2d Battalion, 5th Regimental Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division. Private Miller distinguished himself by extraordinary heroism in action against enemy aggressor forces near Chindong-ni, Korea, on 4 September 1950. On this date, when his position was overrun by the enemy and he was unable to withdraw without abandoning his .50 caliber machine-gun, Private Miller carefully placed a hand grenade in the receiver of his weapon, knowing that it was an extremely dangerous operation, and pulled the pin. In the ensuing blast he received fatal wounds, not being able to get far enough away from the grenade before it exploded. Private Miller's heroic act was responsible for denying the enemy the use of a vital piece of equipment and was ultimately responsible for saving the lives of many of his comrades during the counterattack. Comments: I am looking for anyone who served with my father, Bascom (B.L.) Efird in Korea during 1950-1951 in the 5th RCT, A Company, 24th DIV. He drove a jeep and was wounded in a battle in April of 1951 of which only a few men survived. He received a purple heart and was medically discharged with shrapnel injuries. He is still living in eastern NC and would like to hear from anyone that served with him. He remembers a cook named Lewis and someone called Mark Myers (not sure about the spelling of the last name) from PA.
