I also served on the Q643 in Izmir Turkey in 1974-75. The boat was designated as the generals boat as it was on call for The Nato LSE Commanding General, Melvin Zais(now deceased).
I was Sgt. Bill Howards' replacement. CWO John Dinkelman was the skipper and we fell under Army Aviation command....the colonel in charge of us hated dealing with army sailors and boats..generally made our life miserable.

I served as operator(civilian employee) of the Q-630 from 1981 to 1993, when the beach ranges were closed. the boat was given to a sea scout unit in the SF bay area.
the Q-628 was given to the Berkeley sea scouts about 1990. renamed St. Ambrose, i think.
they were probably the last Q-boats in the army's inventory. i have some photos if anyones interested.

Comments: After returning from Korea in April 1954, I went back to Chicago. There I got a job as a deckhand on a privat yacht, which was a rebuilt Qboat just like the one we had in Korea. We sailed down the Missippi river and over to Miami Beach. Then I went back to Chicago. There I married norwegian girl and we returned to Norway 1967 with 3 children. We are planning on visiting Florida next March (2001)
