TED WILLIAMS F-9F EMERGENCY

Comments: This refers to an email entry 5818 posted by Nicholas de mien [9 years ago!] on 1999-12-24, re: Ted Williams F9F aircraft hit by ground fire in early 1953.

I served with MTACS-2 for 13 months as an ET from '52 to '53. In early '53, during a close air support mission,

I happened to witness an F9F suddenly take an erratic low altitude flight path after apparently being hit by ground fire while trying to pull up from an air strike on NK positions just east of Panmunjom.

At the time I had no idea who it was or how serious the hit was but we did see some shiny liquid leakage aft on the fuselage.

We learned soon afterward from intelligence reports [bad news travels fast] that it was Captain Ted Williams but that he fortunately had made it back to base [K-3] and survived.

That happened, about this same time of year [early spring], some 56 years ago, when I was just a 22 year old [kid] Marine Corporal.

BTW...I revisited South Korea 28 years later in 1980 [at age 50] and was completely amazed to see how the country had rebuilt and prospered.

All that I could recall, from when I left in May 1953, was South Korea's devastation, casualties and poverty from the Korean War, especially after suffering for so many years under Japanese domination before and during WWII.

In 1980, when I witnessed the rebuilding, prosperity and happiness of the people [especially the children] it was a convincing lesson to me that freedom and democracy works every time and that our country's sacrifice of blood and resources makes the world a better place.

I would appreciate hearing from anyone who recalls this event, served with MTACS during the war and/or revisited South Korea. Semper Fi. Gordon Turnbull.

Comments: I am just trying to locate anyone who might have been in Korea when I was there. WE had some very interesting times. I left to return to home when my father died and they didn't send me back because I was too near discharge time. Therefore, I got no addresses or anything before I left. It would just be interesting to hear from anyone.

Comments: With deep respect to those who served and thanks to you for this website. Have just returned from visit to Korea and DMZ. Visit made more meaningful knowing that first cousin of my mother- Cpl. J.C. Lomax, Jr. of Houston- was killed in action in 1951. Have been unable trace location/engagement where he died, but would appreciate any advice on other means where I might find this information.

Thanks again.
