WHAT HAPPENED ON CHONGSON?

Comments: As I recall the gooks (Korean guerillas) breached the perimeter at the
MPS-4 sight - tried to neutralize the MPS-4; However Snuffy Hawbaker
locked the door from the inside, the gooks then put an explosive
charge under the bed of the truck but due to the armour plating did
very little damage to the trailer. They the proceeded to the CPS-5 and
communication on the higher elevation. They fired their weapons at
bed cot level and below. Some of our Marines left their tents through
the door but forgot to kill the lights and made a perfect target in the
lighted doorway. I forgot how many of our comrades received enemy
fire that way. They then left for the lower levels of Chongson. The
next day we set up permiter defense around Coffeemill site. That day
as the Sgt of the guard was positioning his men instead of retiring CCW
around his established guards he got up and exposed himself and the
two reliefs with him by cutting across the ridge. His earlier established
guard saw a shilouette and cried out to challenge the figures. The Sgt
of guard thinking the man had spotted a legimate target ran toward
that sentry. The sentry seeing the advancing target shouted halt, halt
but the target advanced toward where the sentry fired and killed two of
ourown men.

Comments: I remember that night very well as it was my 19th. birthday. One of the Baldy sentries that night was a friend from my home town Atlanta GA. His name was Bernard Haight. At the time it started I believe he was near the motor transport area. Some times I lived on Baldy but that night was at the top of the hill. We got out at about 2:00 AM (I think), and strung a line of guys around the mountain top. The next night I was on top of the hill when the two linemen were killed.
Several of the guys living on Baldy had talked about seeing gooks in the woods at night but no one realy took them seriously thinking it was BS.

ATTACK ON CHANGSON MT. AUGUST 51

Comments: On/about the night August 6/7,1950 a squad of gooks walked up on the smaller of the two 'mountains'thatcomprised Changson and which was the site of the motor transport and supply depots together with a truck size piece of radar equipment dug in. The squad walked right past a 'sentry' who was guarding a fresh supply of equipment in their crates. He saw them, they didn't see him. The gooks proceeded to their 'positions': one pair went over to the supply tent in which slept two of our people and sprayed the area with a burp gun, killing one of our men. The rest, two/three? went to the radar van and began to drop grenades around the tires. The radar guys inside felt the van rock, heard the explosions. One opened the van door and looked directly into the presence of a gook who was just about to fire into the van. The Marine closed the door and he and his buddy waited for rescue. The gooks left the area. A detail of ours made it
to the site but the supply clerk was dead of a head wound.
The next day we were all out and about, I was on the 'attack' hill with another guy and a burp gun plus a bunch of people. Around midnight, we heard rifle fire from top side and in a few minutes got the word that two men from telephone squad (one named Summers) from the telephone squad were killed by a new man as they walked back from their position near the big antenna. The next day they were taken away on a jeep along with the new man.

Comments: After a hurricane in October (?)we moved by LST around coast from Pusan to Kunsan, set up on beach. I was sent to Cheju Do in late autumn to 'handle' communications (EE-8s) and security (My M-1 plus an old BAR) Spent some time as a radar guy when another man went sick. Security for senior officers who flew in to go pheasant hunting on the mountain! A group of airforce weather people shared the very old stone building we lived in. Plus an airforce officer who stood around waiting for the Chinese to cross over on their way to Japan. A nearby orphanage had been created by an American pilot/preacher whose story made into a movie later on. Recall there was a leftover crowd of bad guys on mountain which were hunted out and killed by ROK.
