In September 1950, the 51st FIG and its 16th and 25th Squadrons moved to Japan under the operational control of the 8th FBW. Within hours of arrival, group pilots began flying F-80s on combat air patrol, armed reconnaissance and close air support missions over Korea. The 51st FIG moved to Kimpo AB, located just south of Seoul, in October. In December, it flew 763 sorties, including close air support for the 2nd Infantry Division, cut off by the enemy in the vicinity of Kunu-RI. The 51st FIG helped protect the division's flanks and destroyed enemy roadblocks halting southward movement. In early January 1951, it rejoined its parent wing in Japan but continued to fly missions over Korea, staging first through Taegu and then through Suwon Air Base. Returning to Korea in late July, the 51st FIG supported ground forces and its pilots flew patrol, escort, interdiction, and armed reconnaissance missions. In September and October, the group devoted its major combat effort against railroads and other main supply routes in North Korea. After the 51st FIG transitioned to F-86 Sabre jets in November-December, its primary mission became air superiority.

Comments: I have photo or film negatives from my grandfather who was in the the Air Force and did work for the Central Intelligence Group in Korea. I see some that have images of the 51st Fighter Interceptor Group and was wondering if your group would be interested in these? Many of them are of the air base and service men and planes.

Comments: Machinist. Dad said they did a lot of field work for improvements and to keep Sabrejets airborne. Francis Gabreski was commander. I can't spell the airbase's.
Su Wan? Suicki? A couple of field's mentioned. Time in Japan and S. Korea. 1950-53? Have photo of "Rice Paddy Daddy" and a couple of old C-47's, think one had a painting of "Elmer Fudd" on the nose. I forget.
Might have been a P-61 along with ROK P-51's. A-26's also. Any ideas?
