49th Fighter Bomber Wing

United States Air Force

Units

49th Fighter-Bomber Group

543rd Tactical Support Group

9th Fighter-Bomber Squadron

334th Fighter-Interceptor Squadron

The 49th FBW provided air defense of Japan until December 1, 1950, when it moved without personnel or equipment to Taegu AB, South Korea, replacing the 6149th Tactical Support Wing. The wing's non-tactical units returned to Japan for a month in January-February 1951, except for a wing detachment that stayed to refuel and rearm aircraft staging through Taegu - a vital mission maintained for most of the war. The 49th FBW was attached to the 58th FBW, March 16-31, 1953. On April 1, in a designation switch, the 49th moved without personnel or equipment to Kunsan AB, where it absorbed the resources of the 474th FBW and continued combat operations to July 27.

Combat Components

49th Fighter-Bomber Group: duration except detached July 9-November 30, 1950 and March 16-31, 1953.
543rd Tactical Support Group: attached December 1, 1950-January 26, 1951.
9th Fighter-Bomber Squadron: attached August 17-c. September 6, 1950.
334th Fighter-Interceptor Squadron: attached February 24-March 1, 1951.

Stations

Taegu AB, South Korea, December 1, 1950; Tsuiki AB, Japan, January 26, 1951; Taegu AB, South Korea, February 24, 1951; Kunsan AB, South Korea, April 1, 1953-.

Comments: My Father Edward Fowler served with the 49th Wing out of Japan in 1951-51. I have photos of Him and the base and would love to hear any stories. He was very closed mouth about his service and I know very little. He has photos of a friend Joe Strawbridge who seems to have passed in a car crash. There are many photos of the vehicle and of Joe. They seem to have been fast friends but I have no other info. Dad was married to His 1st wife at the time of His service. They only lasted until War ended and He met my Mom who He was with 50 years.. So He did not talk of the War time for that reason as well. I am looking for any info on my Dad first, but also the mood of the Unit in 1951 and 2 and what His activities as an 18-19 year old would have been. What Job He may have had etc. I am also willing to share the pics. There are a few of poker games with group of Men and some off time in Japan with a few Buddies..

Comments: I spend a short time at the Naktong Gunnery Range on the Naktong River before I returned to the states in May 1953. I have returned to Korea 4 times, twice visiting military sites. The last time was at Hahoe a 600 year old historicdal village and judging from photos taken and viewed after returning sensed that I might have been close to the gunnery range which had been manned by 27 from the 3rd detachment of the 49th Fighter Bomber Wing. I would like to relocate the site and need clues or coordinates as to its location. Once confident of success I hope to return to that same site to satisfy a urge since only a few references have been found on the internet. I have photos of the location and per Google Satellite have followd the route taken up the Naktong River but am unable to locate it. It took me 5 hours in a 6by each direction and my notes also indicate it was an 83 mile trip from K-2 near Taegu. I spoke with several on the phone who were there, and at that time they weren't sure where they were. Also I have a 1953 K-2 newspaper describing life there but not its location. Hahoe is close to Andong. I can email photos to any interested person. aloha Harry
