Comments: articles concerning the break up of the 116th told that most all the guardsmen were sent back to the US- this was WRONG, We all had a 21 month commitment - most all the flight crews and aircraft maintenance personnel did end up in KOREA. BUT all the rest of the service personnel medic /AP/ cooks etc. were put on a train at Misawa and then were dropped off at all the different AF bases throughout japan . I know because I was one of the last five that ended up at Itazuke AB on the southern island of Kyushu- 2 medic/2 APs/1 cook. This didn't work out for us five for their were no positions open at Itazuke and the very next day were put on another train and sent back up to MIHO AB on the main island of Honshu- I was the cook- I stayed their till Oct1955 then returned to the US- their was some info in these articles that we were flying F80s over there- WRONG we went to japan with F84s strapped to decks on the two carriers - I ended up with 28 plus years as a E8 in the aircraft material control field

Remember the five simple rules to be happy:
1. Free your heart from hatred.
2. Free your mind from worries.
3. Live simply.
4. Give more.
5. Expect less.
No one can go back and make a brand new start. Anyone can start from now and make a brand new ending.
God didn't promise days without pain, laughter without sorrow, sun without
rain, but He did promise strength for the day, comfort for the tears and light for the way.
Disappointments are like road bumps, they slow you down a bit but you enjoy
the smooth road afterwards.
Don't stay on the bumps too long. Move on!
When you feel down because you didn't get what you want, just sit tight and
be happy, because God has thought of something better to give you.
When something happens to you, good or bad, consider what it means. There's a purpose to life's events, to teach you how to laugh more or not to cry too hard.
You can't make someone love you. All you can do is be someone who can be loved; the rest is up to the person to realize your worth.
It's better to lose your pride to the one you love, than to lose the one you
love because of pride.
We spend too much time looking for the right person to love or finding fault
with those we already love, when instead we should be perfecting the love we
give.
Never abandon an old friend. You will never find one who can take his/her place. Friendship is like wine, it gets better as it grows older.

Do you have any information how to find an APO number for Misawa AFB, Japan in the early 1950's. This information is required to prove that he was there.

Unit: LL6TH FIGHTER BOMBER WING
Service or Relationship:
Comments: The ll6th Fighter Bomber Wing consited of three
squadrons of Air National Guard units from Atlanta
Georgia; Jacksonville, Florida and San Bernandino,
Callifornia. The wing trained at George AFB, CA., and sailed to Japan July 9-10, l951 aboard
pocket carriers,"Sidcom Bay" and "Wyndam Bay".
Starting in December l951, the ll6th became the
first Air Force Unit in history to utilize air-to-air refueling in combat operations, flying from
Misawa, Japan to North Korea in "Operation High
Tide."
I served with the ll6th from November l951
until July l952 when the unit designation was
returned to Air National Guard Status. Most of
its original personnel had rotated back to the U.S.by then. The men and aircraft remaining were
redesignated the 474th Fighter Bomber Wing and
transferred to Korea in the largest Combat Cargo
airlift of the war. The 474th was stationed out of Kunsan (K-8), South Korea until the spring of l953. At that time, the 474th exchanged aircraft
and personnel with the 49th Fighter Bomber Wing.
In early summer l953, these two wings were combined into the 58th Fighter bomber Wing (Reinforced) and the 474th and 49th Wings were
placed on inactive status. The 58th FB Wing then
relocated to K-2 (Taegu, South Korea).
The ll6th's primary duty was the aerial defense
of Japan (Northern Honshu and Hokkaido),but its
units flew combat missions from Misawa AB, Japan
throughout the war. Early in the war, when the
49th Fighter Bomber Wing was operating out of
Misawa with F-80 Shooting Stars, maintenance
people at Misawa invented the "Misawa Tank", an
extra 360 gallon wing tip tank arrangement that
allowed the F-80's to fly from Japan, hover over
a target for 30 minutes to l hour and then return
to Japan, "recovering" at bases in southern Japan
and sometimes in Korea.
I would like to hear from any veterans of the
ll6th, 474th, 49th Fighter Bomber Wings or these
other units: 753rd Battalion, 40th Anti-Aircraft
Artillery Regiment (Army); Flight C, 3rd Air Res-
cue Squadron; 56th Strategic Recon. Squadron;
lst Radio Squadron; 21st Air Weather Wing and
60l6th Air Base Group.
Please reply either to e-mail or address listed
above. Thanks.
