Comments: Mi papá, Guillermo Posada es veterno de la guerra de Corea. Hoy en dia tiene 76 annos, y me alegra muchisimo la noticia que me dio esta semama. El sabado viaja a Corea. El gobierno Coreano llevara a unos veteranos (como 30) para actos conmemorativos por los 60 años, todo pagado por ellos. Entre las condiciones para ser elegido estaban la de tener visa americana vigente pues el vuelo hace escala en NY. Se que de los 5000 colombianos que participaron solo viven alrededor de 300. Al menos esa es la cantidad inscrita en la Asociacion de Veteranos. Por cierto, que alegria que por fin despues de 55 annos el gobierno Colombiano por fin les cumplio y desde hace como 8 annos estan recibiendo una pension. Poca pero algo es algo (es lo unico bueno que hizo Andres Pastrana!, dice mi papa)

Mi padre es veterano de Korea. La semana pasado celebramos su aniversario de natalicio 77. Cuando niños gozamos y sufrimos con las anécdotas sangrientas pero siempre emocionantes de los horrores de la guerra que el nos compartia.
Tenia un gran archivo con medallas, fotos, filminas a color que nos permitian trasladarnos en el espacio y acercarnos un poco hasta aquellos escenarios. Pero hace como unos cuanrenta años se nos incendió la casa que el construyo con sus propias manos de carpintero artista, quemandose todo bien y vestigio de recuerdos incluidos los de Korea.
Si alguien me puede compartir sus fotos le agradezco enviarlas a mi correo electronico

Keywords: Cada vez que encuentro algo relacionado con la guerra de corea, me erizo, y se me hace un nudo en la garganta. Cada vez que veo alguna foto y veo el rostro de esos culicagados de 17 años, trato de ponerme en sus zapatos, mejor dicho en sus botas, y trato de sentir lo que ellos sintieron. Obviamente no se puede. Lo mas cercano que he estado a dicho sentimiento es cuando oigo a mi papa Jose Miguel Espitia y cuando me explica lo que pasa en las fotos. Es un orgullo ser hijo de un veterano de guerra. Que Dios llos bendiga a todos y les deseo lo mejor porque se lo merecen.

Comments: FERNANDO OLGUIN'S PERSONAL NARRATIVE ABOUT HIS EXPERIENCES IN THE KOREAN WAR
I enlisted in the U.S. Army on the 13th of July, 1951. At this particular time the main offensives and counter offensives in Korea had been fought. The defensive perimeter at Pusan had broken and were pushing north finally in conjunction with the Inchon Landing. The Eighth Army and First Marine Division had pushed the North Koreans north to the Yalu, when the Chinese entered the war. The Marines and what was to be my outfit (what was left of it) the 7th Infantry Division fought their entrapment and began to fight their way back south to Hungnam. So, all this occurred while I was yet to be trained as a foot soldier in the infantry. I received my training at Fort Ord, California near the Monterrey peninsula. The Sixth Infantry Division was at Fort Ord; at that time it was commanded by Major General R.B. McLure I believe he was a veteran at the start of the Korean War. We went through 16 weeks of infantry training and became familiarized with the weapons of the time: M1 Garand, M1 Carbine, air and water cooled machine guns, Bar Rifle, and the hand grenades - the works. I later learned that with all the training we received, there was no better training than actual combat, where you learn fast under actual conditions. I suppose that is why they call it "basic training" before combat. So now, after 16 weeks of basic training, I was a certified rifleman. We all took our leave and spent it home with the family. Then we checked in at Camp Stoneman in Oakland, California. This was about the last days of November 1951. We got our inoculations and boarded in San Francisco, California for our Korean destination. Our troop ship was the USS Gordon which took us to Yokohama, Japan, after three weeks on the ship. We disembarked in Yokohama, where we were given more shots (inoculations) at Camp Drake. Then we boarded again for Korea, a three day trip. It took three days because on arriving close to Korea we went around the southern most tip of Korea - through the Korean Strait which looped all around the Yellow Sea and landed at Inchon. It was December, now, of 1951 and I was about to find out what a Korean winter was about. General Van Fleet was in command of the Eighth Army and I was to be under his command. He had replaced General Matthew B. Ridgeway. Ridgeway having replaced General Douglas McArthur after being fired by Harry S. Truman, our President at the time. Having disembarked in Inchon on the first days of December 1951, this was early in the day and we were trucked to Chunchon near the 38th parallel. I was yet to know my outfit with the 31st R.C.T. 7th Infantry Division. Battle conditions at the time of December 1951, were at a stalemate. Truce meetings were being held in Pamunjon. The first meeting had taken place on July 10.1951. There was a lull in the war, but by no means was the war over. There would still be two years of fighting, although, the heaviest fighting since the outbreak of the war in June of 1950 up to this point was over. The taking of ground such as at the start of the war was over. The main line of resistance (MLR) was stabilized. Under General Ridgeway's orders there would be no more taking of ground. It would now be positional fighting, instead of a war of movement. Although I was not aware of all this at the time, it took a lot of research on my part to learn all this, later on. In Chunchon we stayed long enough to receive our weapons and equipment : my M1 Garand which would be my inseparable partner, ammo belt and, of course, ammo, mess gear, winter clothing which would top off everything else we were wearing, our winter shoe pacs, gloves and we were ready to go to the MLR. As I mentioned before, earlier my outfit would be "K" Co. 31st R.C.T. 7th Infantry Division. We were trucked to where they were positioned which at the time was on the central eastern front of North Korea. This included the area of Heart Break Ridge, Chorwan, the Kumwha Valley, the Iron Triangle and Hwachon Reservoir. This would be my area of combat for the duration. There was also the Punchbowl, Bloody Ridge and Old Baldy. I have some pictures I took in Kumwha. One of my friends, Paavo Pogue, who was in a different company took pictures of Heart Break Ridge where we were both on the line. The photos bring back vivid memories. He was wounded on Heart Break Ridge. He was also a bar man. When I finally arrived to my outfit, they were in reserve. I caught the final two weeks reserve they had left. This gave me enough time to zero in on my M1 rifle; to take the kinks out after being on board ship for three weeks, on march walks and climbing the hills. Zeroing in on my rifle was my main concern and always, always having plenty of ammo. Having done this, it was now December 24th, 1951 about 02:00 hours when we were ready to pull out of reserve. We got on trucks and moved to the base of Heart Break Ridge. It was winter and the snow was packed. We started our climb to Heart Break Ridge. We could see the flash of artillery and hear the thunder of the artillery. I knew then that the reality had set in, that I would have to face up to what was up ahead. Everything went smoothly up to the top. We relieved the unit on line, took our gun positions and they withdrew into reserve down the same way we came up. I found out we were to be on line for 30 days and in reserve for 30 days. The following morning I took in my surroundings. The command post was on the reverse slope of Heart Break Ridge, on our side. On the reverse slope facing another high ridge was where the Chinese were. It was so close I wondered what both sides were doing there facing each other so close. As I mentioned before, the battle situation had been stabilized. Heart Break Ridge had been taken prior to my arrival on October 15, 1951, by the Second Infantry Division and French Battalions. It was a bloody battle for both sides but the Chinese seemed to have less value on lives accounting for their tremendous losses, far out numbering our losses; before they were driven off. Now we were holding the ridge. On our side of the ridge there were foot paths, our command post, bunkers and trenches. On our forward slope we had our gun emplacements opposite the Chinese emplacements on the opposite ridge. We had a tank on the flank right side of our positions which at 10:00 in the morning would always move up into position and fire away at the enemy bunkers blasting them and knocking them out. We would then receive a barrage of enemy mortar shells much to our discomfort. This was a daily ritual; the tank and mortars. There were many casualties this way on the receiving end. There were many confrontations when we probed our forward lines in the darkness, probing, laying barbed wire, causing casualties on the enemy and harassing the Chinese. This was Ridgeway's orders at the time: inflict casualties, engage the enemy, but no more ground taking. The war had taken its toll on both sides. The Chinese had been beaten to a point. They couldn't carry on the war in the fashion they had started in June 1950. Their logistics were not there. They couldn't keep resupplying their troops for a major offensive anymore. They didn't have a transportation system for resupplying their troops except in the crudest way by use of donkeys, horses, and human carriers. At this stalemate or lull, they were taking advantage to take a second wind and reorganize. Heart Break Ridge had been my initiation into combat. The war still had two and a half years to go. After thirty days on Heart Break Ridge we went into reserve and I found out I had eight months to go for my war on the rotation system. We got 4 points each month on the MLR for a total of 36 points for nine months on the front. After that you were sent home. It was said that if you lasted nine months on the front you were indeed lucky. We left Heart Break, much to my relief, into our reserve area east of Heart Break in Kumwha Valley just behind the MLR where we could get a hot meal, sleep in our canvas bunks in tents and take a hot shower after 30 days. I met one other fellow, the only one from my home town of Tucson while taking that needed shower. I can't recall his name. I haven't seen him since and I don't know if he made it back. I hope he did. After reserve was up we moved up to the front line again in the Kumwha Valley. Our gun positions were under the railroad tracks. They made good fortifications. Beyond the tracks we had our forward outposts 500 yards to our front. We got to man those outposts alternately. Trenches led up to them as the terrain was flat leading up to them. The valley met up to high ridges where the Chinese were emplaced looking down on us. There was an incident that I learned about although I was not a part of it. I had not gotten to Korea yet. This was when the 1st Marine Division and the remnants of the 7th Infantry Division passed through Funchillan Pass after having to build a bridge the Chinese had blown up to stop their way back to Hungnam to safety. I accredit this to an act of almighty God when I learned their way was illuminated with a light unexplainable although there was not a moon and the night was pitch black. I mention this because I can't feel but that a miracle was in place by almighty God lighting their way out to safe haven. In the same way all through my time in Korea I felt this sense of protection from almighty God guiding every step of my way. In Kumwha it was touch and go all through the rest of the time I had to go before I could be rotated back home. I prayed the Chinese wouldn't drive us back south again across the 38th parallel and hit us with another big offensive. The fighting stayed at limited engagements, harassing the enemy, hitting them, then moving back to the line. The Airforce always worked them up before and after engaging the Chinese. First this would soften them up and then would cover our withdrawals back to the line. We had the F80's Shooting Stars do this at the time. The F86's were up in the Yalu in MIG alley engaging the Chinese MIGs doing their own battle. Around April 1952, while in reserve, our company commander asked if anyone wanted to go over to a Colombian Battalion which was attached to the 7th Infantry Division, those who spoke Spanish, of course. My Spanish wasn't all that good. I thought of being with people I didn't know or if I would understand them or them me. I also thought if it would be any better or chances of making it through the rest of my time in Korea. Up to this time, by the grace of God, I wasn't hit yet or wounded. I didn't know how my luck would hold out. So I tried it with the Colombians. For the record, I was never hit or wounded. Can you imagine that? How lucky can you get? It turned out to be a good move. I fit in with the Colombians and they accepted me very well. I had privileges offered me such as getting in first in their chow lines or to make things easier on me. But I never took them. It didn't seem right to me and I would never want them to feel that I was better than they were. My assignment with the Colombians took in calling in artillery fire with the coordinances given to me by their forward observers, translating the coordinances in English back to the artillery batteries. I wasn't trained for the artillery but now I was getting to be a jack of all trades. It was a good experience. The valley in Kumwha was a big valley. If you were in the middle of it on patrol you had a good chance of not making it back because the Chinese would zero in on you or had it already zeroed in and they would hold you there until artillery was called in to make a withdrawal or the F80s would napalm and strafe their ridges for a pullout. One lieutenant (Colombian) whom I have a picture of with both of us in the photo was killed in the valley. The Colombian Battalion commander had me go with him with a few other officers to a demonstration air drop and critique back of the lines. It was my job to translate for them and translation it would be for almost everything. So my time was passing away and rotation was getting closer. I went on R and R from the Colombian Battalion to Nara, Japan. I had forgotten what it was to live in style. We had bunk beds with bed sheets, polished floors, pillows, I had forgotten. They had an enormous mess hall where you could order anything you wanted to eat, anything. So you guessed what we could have. We made the rounds around Nara, sent souvenirs back home, called the family and talked with them for a while. So everything good comes to an end and we flew back to Korea after 5 days. Most of the men who were involved in the earlier campaigns of the war had rotated back home. My time was getting closer. The closer you get to going home you try to watch yourself more in taking unnecessary chances. No one knows what the next minute will bring. On September 1952 after serving with the Seventh Division and my stint with the Colombian Battalion the day had come. They notified me that I was being rotated back home. I was both glad and sad in leaving friends whom I'd been with for such a long time. I felt like an integral part of a unit and there always remains a missing link. My greatest separation I had to make was to give up my rifle on my final processing going home. I really felt naked, almost like losing an arm. And an arm it was, my armament, old faithful.Looking back 47 years later, I always wondered about my outfit the 7th Division and Colombian Battalion. I got more deeply involved in finding out what the Korean War was all about, from the start of the war in June of 1950 to the end of the war in July of 1953. I found out that ten months later, after I had rotated home my outfit, the 7th Infantry Division and the Colombian Battalion, both in which I served, were attacked in the same vicinity I had left. This was the final offensive tried by the Chinese in 1953 before the armistice was signed. On March 23, 1953, the Chinese penetrated their lines and it was hand to hand combat and the Colombians were driven off the hill 266 while the others held by the Seventh Infantry Division held. It was a bloody battle so close to the war's end. It was very saddening to me to have learned this. Also in 1971, nineteen years later the Seventh Infantry Division was pulled out of Korea by President Nixon. The Seventh Infantry Division was later deactivated. As for the Colombian Battalion after their last encounter with the Chinese in 1953, I don't know what became of them. All I have is memories of them. The MLR is defended up to this time mostly by the ROK Divisions across the Korean peninsula, east to west with 37,000 American troops in reserve. Most of us who were there preserve those memories which will never be forgotten. It is called the "Forgotten War" but never by those who were there.
