Comments: I am trying to locate pictures if my late grandfather Marion Eugene Hoffman (Osterhaught). He was stationed on the USS Sarsi. He told me about the ship sinking off the coast of Korea, how he went back onto the sinking boat for the American Flag and how he remembered being on a life raft at night. Also any stories/memories you have would be greatly appreciated!!

Comments: Tom Wilbeck,
I just happened to come across this site while doing some research on my
family history. Charles Kunsch was my uncle - his named is spelled
corretly (not Kunson). He was classified as MIA, but according to the
letters my grandma recieved from other sevicemen who were with him, he
was killed instantly when the USS Sarsi hit a mine.

Comments: I was aboard the Sarsi when she struck a mine on August 27, 1952 off Hungnam, North Korea. What is the latest news regarding reunions? I have never attended any of the prior reunions. At the time of the sinking I was a mere lad, assuming the duties of the ship's yeoman. Our prior ship's yeoman had been evacuated while on the west coast of North Korea due to a heart attack. I also served as the Captain's talker while on special sea detail and/or general quarters.

All I remember is the Sarsi life ring hanging in the compartment. It was said the officers didn't eat in the wardroom they stayed and ate with the crew in the enlisted mess. This is seconed hand info.

Comments: I served on the USS Zeal and have viedo that shows some of the survivors of the Sarsi that were rescued by the Zeal on that August day. I was not on board at that time, but have served as president and am now secretary/treasurer of the USS Zeal Association. We meet yearly and welcome any survivors of the Sarsi to our reunion. I know that they have recently started meeting themselves.
