Comments: Maj. Johann Stawinsky, was my Dad.
Sadly, he passed in April 2008, and is is at rest in Arlington National Cemetery.
We found his Service Jacket after he passed, covering his service in Korea.

Service or Relationship: US Army

Comments: Dates: 1955 – 1957
Location: Yeongdeungpo District of southwest Seoul, South Korea during the Korean War.
Narrative: My father is now 84 years old and can vivdly recount stoies of his assignment in Korea. He worked the prison camps in Yeongdeungpo (pronounced Yong Dong Po) as Military Police for captured Chinese and North Korean prisoners of war. It is a gruesome story. He was only 20 years old and can recount in detail many of the things he saw while assigned. Although US Army has no record of the exisitance of the camp or military activities in that region the stories still haunt him.

During 1955-1957, I served as a Military Police officer (MP) assigned to the 528th Military Intelligence Service Platoon. My duties involved the daily guarding of captured Chinese and North Korean prisoners of war (POWs) imprisoned in the Yeongdeungpo District of southwest Seoul, South Korea during the Korean War.

Traumatic events:
The camp was a Joint Forces POW camp where captured Chinese and North Korean prisoners were tortured and imprisoned.

1.   Soldiers routinely tortured captured POWs with an interrogation technique simulating the experience of drowning, in which a person is strapped; face up, to a board that slopes downward at the head, while large quantities of water are poured over the face into the breathing passages. (Also known as water boarding.) Waterboarding is a form of water torture in which water is poured over a cloth covering the face and breathing passages of an immobilized captive, causing the individual to experience the sensation of drowning.

2.   British soldiers hung Chinese and North Korean POWs upside down at the camp entrance gates to serve as a warning to others captured. I’ve seen the British soldiers cut open prisoner bodies and watched them hang the mutilated corps of POWs upside down at the camp gates.

3.   In transport vehicles imprisoned POWs were seated upside down. On one occasioned I witnessed the vehicle stalled in water with the prisoners heads under water for a substaial amount of time. Needless to say all of the prisoners drowned ne case, the vehicle got stuck in water and all of the

4.   Brainwashing

5.   Starvation

The trauma he experienced as a 20-year older solider with only two years of service serving in the United States Army troubled the experienced VA psychiatrist during his interview.

We are in search of other soliders who may have served in the region, The military doesn't even recognize the period of wartime.

Comments: I was assigned to 528 MIC in Sept. of 1958 to Nov. 1959
I was a Military policeman with the Eight USA security
detachment.it was a small compound not far from K-16,
it was in young don poh. I have very fond memories of
my tour there. Maj. Johann Stawinsky was the compound
Comm. I remember all of my fellow soldiers, Robert L.
Pratt he was like a brother-Mich.- Milton A. Barnett-
ALA. Marion Blizzard-Fla.-James Brillo-N.J.Jersey City-
so many faces I remember but not all the names. My
house boy was named Han, he was like a mother and
father to all of us. there was a compound pet, a small
white and black dog his name was ita-wa. in Korea that
means come here. we had to watch him 24/7, because the
Korean people in the village did eat dogs.they were not
all good memories, I have some bad ones all so. Would
love to hear from some of the people that was there in
that time frame. I went back in to the US Army Reserve
and retired in 2000. God Bless America.

Comments: I was in the 528th Military Intelligence Company in
Yong-Dong Po (fairly close to Seoul City Air Base
(K-16) from May 1959 to May 1960. We were on our own
small installation with a closed off compound within
our compound for holding guests from North Korea. I
had just finished the Chinese-Mandarin Course in
Monterey but wasn't needed because most of the guests
were Korean. Therefore, after being a (rather shaky)
NCOIC of the MP Detachment for a couple of weeks I
ended up running the NCO club for the rest of my tour.

Comments: My dad was on escort duty in Korea in 53-54. He was also in WWII. I have a few stories but really want to help honor him (and his buddies). Wish it had been done before he dies, but like so many, he didn't want to talk about it.
