Comments: KOREAN WAR VET SEEKS HELP GETTING A CANOE BEFORE HE DIES
The YPD had a very special walk-in visit yesterday from Korean War Veteran Jim Goetschius and his wife Maxine that took us by surprise.
Jim stated that he heard that we always did what we could to support Veterans and asked if we could help him obtain a canoe so he could canoe all around Cape Cod this summer. Jim is in great shape and explained that he loves the water and he would love to take his wife canoeing with him along the lakes, ponds, and rivers of Cape Cod before he dies.
Jim is now 85-years-old and told us how he served with the United States Army 308th CIC in Korea and loves the USA.
Jim stated he would take an old canoe and fix it up as he is good with his hands and would be willing to do work for someone in their home if they needed it to pay them back.
If anyone out there has a way to help make this wonderful Veteran's bucket list dream come true, please let us know ASAP by sending an email to Deputy Chief Xiarhos at sxiarhos@yarmouth.ma.us
Always Thank and Help a Vet&

Comments: Noted that a Tom Berghoff posted a message back in 2011 searching for persons that served with the 308th CIC Detachment in Seoul, Korea during 1957-1958.
I remember him from my time there March 1958 to January 1959 as I served in the S2 - Counter Espionage - Special Investigations Team. Think he may have served in S2 - Counter Subversive. I along with many others at that time came up from the 441st CIC Detachment in Japan as a result of an Army phase down.
Would love to make contact with him.

Comments: If any one lived at Grant Heights, Japan, there is a new site called, Japan Brats-About Us. Grant Heights is no longer there, but a lot of us remember it with fond memories. They are asking for pictures and stories of life there. I only lived there for 1 1/2 years, but remember it well. I went to first and 1/2 of second there in 1951-2. If you are interested it is well worth looking at. You might even have some old pictures. Nancy Cvar

Keywords: This was a short paragraph that was written in the autobiography by my father, Lt. Col. John Neil Hull. "In July 1950, shortly following the invasion of South Korea, I was selected as the Operations Officer of a CIC Team organized to accompany the Eighth United Army Hdqtrs to Korea. The advanced elements of the team (myself and two agents) arrived in Korea on 10 July 1950. The remainder of the unit arrived about a week later and the team became officially known as the 308th CIC Detachment in October 1950. During my tour with this unit (July 1950 to July 1951) I served both as Operations Officer and Executive Officer. This being my first real combat experience, I learned a great deal and was proud of the work done by the CIC." I just wanted everyone to know that he enjoyed being in the Army for 21 years.

Comments: I am looking for anyone who might remember my father, Ted Goodin, a CIC Warrant Officer stationed in Korea in 1957 and 1958. He died in 1966 and I don't know much about what he did or where he was stationed. An old photo of him in uniform shows an 8th Army patch on the shoulder. He had previously been in the 745th Intelligence Detachment in Bad Nauheim, Germany (info from a beer stein the unit had) from 1952 to 54. I was born in Frankfurt while he was stationed in Germany.

Comments: I am a member of the 101st Military Intelligence Battalion, part of the 1st Infantry Division in Wuerzburg, Germany. Our unit is working on a couple of projects to highlight some of its history and accomplishments.
When MI Battalions were formed in the early 1980s the decision was made to incorporate CI unit histories into the lineage and honors of the new units. Our battalion assumed the lineage and honors of the 1st MI Detachment (previously the 1st CIC and 1st CI Det).
Unfortunately though, other than the colors of the 1st MI Det (and 1st CIC) - which we retain and hang proudly in our battalion headquarters- very few other historical items or knowledge of the 1st remains in our battalion. I am hoping to correct that. We are attempting to collect personal accounts and stories, photographs, and news articles of the 1st MI Det and 1st CIC from WWII through 1980 for a display in our battalion headquarters.
If you were a member (or if you know of any members) of the 1st CIC, CI Det, or 1st MI Det, please contact me.
I'm hoping to make this project something of which the men of the 1st would be proud. Thank you in advance.

Have been in touch with Harold "Bud" Beerbower presently living in Fairmont WV. Waino Remes and wife were killed in an auto accident UP Michigan, 1997. Joe Grant, wife and kids were in Beverly Hills the last time saw them but I've heard they are out in some big bucks desert town unwinding like the rest of us of our un (?) certain
age-that WAS after all fifty years ago. Len Rothbard, that great person who slowly
tore up Court Martial papers against me (for insubordination) while solemnly asking
me to promise never to kill Max Powers while in Wakkanai and under his ("Mother"
Rothbards) command, retired a colonel and ended up teaching school in Chicago,
happily married with a lovely wife and two fine children. My latest grandson is 4 1/2
months old and of course cute as hell. My daughters are everything loving children
can be. Their husband's are as nice as all daughters husbands should be. After three
wives I've concluded that marriage is far to expensive a habit to continue and that
sporadic temporary liaisson is the only way to go.
I am attempting to locate information of any type regarding Charlie Payne of 3rd TLO
who was KIA in chinese territory by a Chinese agent in Korean farmers garb, near
Pyonggang (I believe) or Chongdo-ri 1951. If you have any details please email me.
Also any info on Mike Abrams, Jack Cannon (of ZED fame), Dick Hamasaki (where is he
now?) others from JSOB, Project Stitch- and for that matter, any one else from those
joyously fascinating times and places.
It would be a delight to hear from any of the Hokkaido (and elsewhere) crew. It's
hard to convince myself today that we actually got paid for all of the exhilarating
fun and games in Hokkaido (for me: Sapporo, lovely women, Kushiro, Wakkanai,
Nemuro, Asahigawa, lovely women, Rebun/Rishiri-to, etc). I reluctantly returned to
the states, finished U of Minn, U of Mich, the finally to Yale and business. but the
fondest memories are still of Hokkaido and Korea.
A last question: Did we accomplish anything in Project Stitch worthwhile? I'd like to
believe so. Korea was a Victory although my gut feeling is we should have continued
North. So geht
