Comments: 1st Lt. DON PINCIOTI - After my tour of duty on Leyte (South
Pacific) and not having enough points to return to the United
States, I was given the duty as senior officer to escort 1500
Japanese prisoners back to Japan on the Helena Mojeska Liberty
Ship. We arrived in Yokahama Harbor on Dec.7, 1945. I was
immediatly assigned to ASCOM-C 8th ARMY HEDQUARTERS in Yokahoma.
My title was Athletic Officer in charge of all Recreational
Activities, for USA troops in and around the Yokahama area. That
included the USO shows from the USA, Japanese Wrestling events,
movies and legitimate stage shows, football, basketball and
baseball teams, trips to Fuji and other parts of Japan.
Arriving in Yokahama, Japan in December, just a few months after
the start of the Occupation, I was instructed to start the 8th
Army football team and schedule some games so the troops in the
Tokyo-Yokahama area would be able to attend the games. I was
appointed the Coach and played fullback and punter on the team.
I had played three years of football at the University of Dayton
before I enlisted in the Army infantry Program in 1942.
We played several football games and, after winning all of our
games, was invited to play the 1303 Engineers in the ARMY TOKYO
BOWL on January 1, 1946 at MEIJI STADIUM in TOKYO. The ASCOM-C
8th ARMY TEAM won the game 18 to 6. I have the player-signed
football, of that game, in my possession and would like to offer
it to the Canton Football Hall of Fame if they would accept a
football dated Jan.1, 1946. If anyone, reading this artical, can
introduce me to anyone from the HALL OF FAME COMMITTEE, I would
appreciate an introduction. My e-mail is WHITESOX1947@AOL.COM
Thank you all for being part of my memories on this VERANS DAY

Keywords: Have read several questions about the existance of Lou Gehrig Stadium in Yokahama Japan during the Occupation of Japan 1945-1946. As 1st Lt. Don Pinciotti, assigned to ASCOM-C of 8th Army Hdq. in Yokahama I became the Special Service Officer in that area assigned to the reconstruction of a bombed-out ballpark that we eventually named LOU GEHRIG STADIUM. In 1946 we started a team that we called the 8th Army Chicks and I became the Manager and Catcher on the team. During the summer of 1946 we played other units every week-end to the enjoyment of thousands of Army and Navy personnel. I have a signed 1946 Japanese baseball of all the players that include Don Pinciotti Manager Toledo, Ohio, Albrt Quinn, New York, Bill Evans Georgia, Michael Pissano Mayfield Pa., Jack Tighe Scranton Pa., Joe Flaherty Easton Pa., Charles Wulff Jamaica N.Y., Stephan Sirkin Daytona Beach Fla., Jim Baumann Nayak N.Y., John Tonsing L.A. Calif.,Dale Boehm Indiana, Damon Phillips Baltimore Orials, George Sisler Jr. St. Louis Mo (Major League player President of American Association and Son of one of the greatest baseball players of all time and a Hall of Famer George Sisler Sr.), Bobby Evans Bartow, Ga or Fla, and our leader and "provider" Lt. Col. W. F. Kirby. Some of these names are hard to read on this 1946 ball so spelling and cities may be a bit off. I eventually graduated from the University of Dayton anf played briefly with the Detroit Lions and Chicago White Sox and Memphis Chicks after the War. If anyone is interested in getting more information of this era don't hesitate in contacting me I am now 87 years old with many memories to share.
