Comments: Hello, my name is Scarlett Futch. I am currently making a scrapbook for my fathers 80th birthday and would love to get any pictures from his time in Korea, I have a few, but would love to hear from anyone who might have known him, not sure if you knew him, his name is Clyde Futch Jr, known as Tom, he was from Burgaw NC, and was in your battalion. Any help or knowledge would be helpful, but most importantly, thank you for fighting for out country and allowing me to have the freedom I have today! Scarlett Futch futchitup@hotmail.com

Comments: My father died recently. This is the obituary we published:

MSgt. James A. Sarge Murray USA (ret.) passed away December 22nd at his home in Worthington (Ohio) after a long struggle with cancer. Born May 5, 1919 in Detroit Michigan, he attended Saint Anthony School and public schools before entering the work force at age 15. During the 1930s he was employed in various jobs including work as a bowling pin spotter, in a brewery and at the Chrysler Corporation. During the Depression he participated in the CCC. He joined the Michigan National Guard along with neighborhood friends and fellow softball players in 1938. Their unit, the 182nd Field Artillery Battalion, was called into Federal service in April 1941. Jim married Bernadette (Barney) Bruley March 11, 1944. He departed for Europe on RMS Queen Mary in April of that year. Landing in France at Omaha Beach on June 7, 1944 the 182nd FAB fought through France and Germany with the US Third and Seventh Armies. This included campaigns in Normandy, Alsace, the Rhineland and Germany. Jim was present at the liberation of the Dachau Concentration Camp. Sarge served directing artillery fire as a forward observer during the winter and spring 1945 and as an observer in Piper L-4 Grasshopper aircraft. Following the war he returned to civilian life in Detroit. However, he remained active in the National Guard. In 1948, he reentered active duty with the Army. He was ordered to Japan in June 1950 as a member of the 48th Field Artillery Battalion (32nd Infantry Regiment) which participated in the Inchon landing in September 1950. Seeing heavy action for the next nine months, they received the Naval Presidential Unit Citation during the liberation of the Korean capitol, Seoul. During fighting in Northeast Korea, the battalion endured severe winter weather conditions in mountainous terrain with heavy snow and temperatures dropping to 50 degrees below zero. Jim was very proud to be a member of the Chosin Few veterans organization. This membership was earned during the fighting withdrawal from the Chosin Reservoir in November of 1950 of the 1st Marine Division. Next the 48th FAB covered the evacuation of X Corps and hundreds of thousands of Korean civilians from the port of Hungnam. He was awarded the Soldiers Medal for bravery after the single-handed rescue of four soldiers from a fire on Christmas Day, 1950. Following service in Korea he served in various postings including the army of occupation in Germany 1952-54. He was assigned as an instructor of ROTC at the Ohio State University. During the early sixties he returned to Korea as a military advisory. He retired from the army at Fort Sill Oklahoma after twenty three years service in November, 1963. Jim then spent almost 20 year with the US Postal Service, and retired in 1982. In retirement, he continued to work, first at the Advest brokerage firm on Broad Street, and finally with Annehurst Veterinary Hospital up until October, 2005. His wife, Barney, preceded him in death in 1998. He is survived by his children, Carol and Gregory Roddy, and Tom and Tonya Murray; his grandchildren, Jennifer and Marc Spector, Rachel Roddy, Joel Roddy, Sarah Murray and Gretchen Murray; and his great-grandson, Jacob Spector. He was a member of several veterans and community organizations, including the Chosin Few, the American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Moose and the FOE. Visiting hours at Novak Funeral Home, 4476 N. High Street, Columbus, will be on Monday, December 27 from 4-7. The funeral will take place at Immaculate Conception Church, 414 EN Broadway on Tuesday, December 27 at 10 AM with burial at the veterans cemetery in Dayton. Friends who wish to make a memorial donation are urged to donate to Saint Judes Childrens Research Hospital (501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105) which Sarge supported for many years, or to the Annehurst Veterinary Hospital Animal Welfare Fund (25 Collegeview Rd, Westerville, OH 43081).

Comments: The picture attached includes lots of information. It was taken at Ackol,Kangwon Province (near Cheolwon Triangle Zone ?)on July 26, 1953 in commemoration of Armistice being in force as of the day. The shell held by my father is the last round shell shoot to the North before the Armistice. At the time, he was sergent, 21 years old. The collegues with him in the picture are Sam, Louis, Jaison and Lt. Brown (Remembered so from left). He understands that they are 2 or 3 years older than he.

He has been in an wish to hear about them. The day before yesterday was 50th anniversary of the Armistice. That special day, he was fallen in the memory of the old collogues and requested me to help hear about them.

I would be much obliged if I could hear any news about them from anyone.

My father retired teacher is in health. He may manage to communicate in English (though he has not used English for a long time). I am writing at least because my English is much better than his. Thank you.

PS. Sorry I can not attach the picture. I will send it by e-mail if anybody wish to see the picture

Comments: I was recalled to active duty in 1950 after serving in the army of occupation in Germany 1946 to 1949. Left Sasebo Japan on a Japanese ship. Was first assigned to the Third Div. but this was the time of the withdrawl from Hamhung North Korea. Was re-assigned to the 7th. Div. on ship and landed in Pusan. The 32 RCT & 48th FA was very active and on the move almost constantly. Remember Chunchon,Chip Yong Nee, Hwatcheon Reservoir. Spelling may not be accurate. Most of the time we didn't know were we were and often time were on Tdy to other units and Divisions. Would like to know if there is a history available. Specifically of the 48th. FA Battalion

Comments: I'm glad to once again be in contact with a number of my old buddies, especially of Bone Personnel of the 48th FA Bn, 7th Inf Div. (1952-1953)

My good friend, Dick Baer of Omaha, Nebraska, has regularly kept me informed as to the goings on. We both attended the reactivation ceremonies of the 7th Inf Div at Fort Carson a few years back.

It is gratifying to learn of the well-being of Col. Joseph (Stan) Kimmitt. He was a fine officer. Though he held up my sergeant stripes for a while, I had (have) tremendous respect for him.

If ever there's a reunion scheduled, I'd like to be notified. Sure want to remain in contact and to locate as many old buddies as I can.

My best to all.

Comments: Ran across this web site, and saw my father's name mentioned in a couple of keywords. LTC "Stan" Kimmitt is still alive, and active as ever. Continued in the military, commanded the 8th Infantry Division in Germany, 62-64. Retired as a Colonel from the Army in '66, went on to work in the US Senate for 15 years, then on the APACHE (Attack Helicopter) program. 3 sons went into the military, all Field Artillery. If you are interested in passing a note to my father, please send me a note at the e-mail listed and I'll pass it on. He'd enjoy hearing form his old comrades. He still maintains a strong affiliation with the battery he commanded in WWII.

My deepest respect to the veterans of the "Forgotten War".
