We wives who lived in Bofu, drove to Oita Ken and put our husbands on a large boat late at night where they took off to be some of the first military in early 1950 to take part in the Korean war. He was in a mortar company and had a platoon. My menory is that he spent at least a year in Korea - maybe a bit longer. He retired from the military in about 1974. His last duty was ROTC at Purdue and when he retired we remained in Lafayette as he taught there for a few years before we moved to Washington.
