Comments: Lots of memories of Pyangtech K-6
WhenI got to Korea in Jan. 1953, we had ADs (hellcats), But we
also had some F4Us (Corsairs). Around Feb. or March we sent the
F4Us to the French in a country called VietNam. Guess they
weren't enough help cause the French met their waterloo at Dien
Bien Phu.
Another interesting point was when I had guard duty. Much of
the 30 days was guarding a bomb dump with a clip of ammo of
only three rounds. I asked why only three rounds??? The answer
was, (I'm not kidding) If you see anyone approaching, just
fire the three rounds in the air and we'll send some Help
Yes!!! The USMC has a great sence of humor.
I've got more interesting episodes, but I'll stop for now.
Anyone that's still alive that knows me, please get in touch

Comments: after about 1 year of technical training, I was transferred to MCAS El Toro, ca.this was in January of 1956. the orders stated for farther transfer beyond the seas.We left San Diego in February aboard the General Hugh J. Gaffey, an MSTS ship with a civilian crew. The food was great and we had plenty of room.we had freedom of the deck and no working parties.after about two weeks at sea, with stops at Formosa and Okinawa,we arrived at Yokohama, Japan.trucks took us to Yokosuka and we were put aboard a permanently docked LST.spitting snow and cold.we had muster three times a day when they would call out a few names and give out duty assignments and locations.after about three days , my name was called and I left for Korea.bitter cold and a howling wind greeted us as we got off the plane in Korea. The First Marine Air Wing was in the process of leaving Korea .Over the next several weeks, everyone was gone except a few of us who stayed to turn the base over to the Koreans.the base was called k3.An old Japanese air base 5 miles 5 miles south of Pohang.WE left Korea the first week of August 1956 aboard an LST. I slept on top of a truck on the canvas cab cover. very comfortable, balmy weather and good food aboard the ship.
I joined vma251 in Japan, Atsugi and Iwakuni.we turned our planes over to another squadron in May,1957 anc we and vma 251 came back to the states.I would like to hear from anyone who was in mag 12 during that time period.

Keywords: I enlisted directly into VMF-251, as a USMC Reservist, at NAS Grosse Ile, MI on 13 Aug 1949. Aviation Ordnance was my MOS. On 1 Mar 51 the squadron was activated (Korean War) and redesignated VMA-251. On 21 Apr 51 we left our F6F Hellcats behind and deployed to MCAS El Toro where our pilots took over a fleet of F4U Corsairs. We still had those birds at the time I left the squadron on 10 Aug 52, contrary to the "official" intel re. the history of VMA-251.
