Comments: We are looking for info for our family tree about Frank M. Ward of Columbus, Ohio. His last assignment was with the 45th Recon Squad. It ended with his being shot down over enemy territory. He was shot down near Kaesong. He was severely injured but rescued and airlifted to Japan. When he recovered, he was sent to Shaw Field in South Carolina. We suspect he may have been in another unit prior. We have info that he 'made a daring attack on the retreating enemy' and won the Distuinguished Flying Cross, with Oak Leaf Clusters. Like others, his records were lost in the fire and he is now deceased. Please contact me if you knew him. Thanks!

Subject: MY GRANDFATHER HERBERT HENRY HAYTON

Dalaine Piesker wrote on May 8, 2008

City and State: NY

Unit:

Service or Relationship: Family Member

Comments: I have started a family tree/history project, I am looking to gain more stories and information from when my grandfather served in the USAF. I know that he had a temporary assignment at Hamilton AFB in route to Elmendorf AFB, the time span is approx 1949-1950. When he was stationed at Elmendorf, he kept his assignment as part of "MATS". He was involved in the transportation of troops and supplies to the Korean War, and he was promoted to Corporal. The story gets a little bit weird, there was an incident that had occurred to my grandfather and the men that he served with, he does not like to talk about this, and from what I have gathered from other family members, there was a plane crash, and he was the only surviving member on the plane. After this incident he spent one year inbetween two hospitals in the US- the 183rd General Hospital at Fort Richardson, Anchorage Alaska and Valley Forge General Hospital, Phoenixville Pennsylvania. After he was released from the hospitals he was sent to Fort Slocum, New Rochelle, New York, it was here that he had to await his next assignment. At some point in 1951, my grandfather was assigned to the 1st Air Force 52nd Fighter Wing 568th Air Base Group at McGuire AFB, New Jersey. He worked as a Postal Clerk and was promoted to Sgt and made NCO. After his 4 years (total time) he was honorably discharged. He re-enlisted 3 months later back into the USAF and was stationed at Sampson AFB, Geneva New York, his assignment was to train Basic's (new airmen). In July of 1953, he married my grandmother, then the new regulation came out which allowed him to be honorably discharged, giving him a total of 5 1/2 years proudly serving in the USAF.
My grandfather's name is Herbert Henry Hayton, he joined the service is February of 1948, he hailed from Rochester, New York.
If anyone remembers him, served with him, took care of him at the hospitals or whatever, I would appreciate it if you could contact me and tell me about my grandfather. He is still alive and doing very well, but the memories still haunt him and he doesn't like to talk about it, so I will take whatever help that I can get. Thanks for protecting the American dream, and the American people, and thank you for helping me to complete my family history.

His records were destroyed in a fire at the VA in the 1970's. After 14 years of searching we finally compiled enough information to have his grave marker ordered and placed.

This is all that I know:

Service Dates: August 6, 1951 - April 5, 1957

I know that a few RAF pilots flew with the USAF but information is hard to find. He flew Spitfires in Burma during WWII, then Korea (I have his Korea medal) and then spent quite a few years flying with the Hong Kong Auxiliary Air Force after converting to helicopters.

Comments: I am the daughter of a deceased Korean War veteran. My family and I are trying to piece together my father's military history. We know he was in the Air Force reserves and became active during the Korean War (was navy pilot in WWII). His name was John A Anderson II (aka Andy during his service years). He was born in 1923 and would have been an older pilot involved in short term possibly special ops activities. He was from Mass. and spoke with a strong Weymouth accent with a slight Swedish inflection. He was about 5'10", 140 lbs, round face, curly hair but balding at the front. Training was in electicial engineering, radar and aeronautics design. My father retired a colonel in 1973. We have been unable to receive any records from the NPRC. Comments: I have been unable to find any info about this crash, but know it happened, as have had contact with the doctor who cared for the person who rescued both my father and Chappy James from the burning plane. It was in 1950 or 51, and he married my mother, Elizabeth Anne Tinsley who at the time was an AF nurse who cared for him. He was in a body cast for 14 months in the hospital at Dayton. He retired in 1958, I believe from Brooks Field in San Antonio, Texas, and trained pilots at Randolph for a while, too. Prior to that he was in AAC 390th Bob Group bombing Germany in 1945. Only have scattered info, as he wouldn't talk about it much. He also served in Korea from April or May of 1953 to 1954.

Comments: My father passed away this last Sept. 2005. At his funeral there were two Air Force gentlemen there playing taps, presenting the flag etc., this was such a touching moment. My Father was in the Korean war but he never talked about it. After his funeral I thought I want to know what he did there for our county. If anyone out there knew a Lee Earl William Shaw from Lexington Ky please contact me.
Thanks
Robyn
