Comments: I arrived at Osan in August 1959 and was there for the last three weeks in the Semi's before we moved to work in the concrete building. I left in Sept 1960 before everyone moved into the cinder block barracks, so I spent the year in the Quanset Huts, the one next to the showers. My best friends were Harry Wellman, Bob Dorr, Dick Ristano and all the guys in the K-9 class at ALS who graduated in April, 1959 and then went to Goodfellow AFB. To Syd Kahre, I remember Dick Auger; he was the intellectual who graduated from Yale and every time I saw him he was reading philosophy. At the time, like everyone else I disliked Korea, but on reflection it was a great year, one I've never regretted. And I managed to leave without contracting a sexually transmitted disease. The best part was coming home. I spent a week in Tokyo and then four days in San Francisco with Bob Dorr (who had gotten an early out) before flying home and then on to my next assignment. Life was indeed simple then.

Occasionally he would mention that his group was referred to as the three-F's. I also know he was fluent in both Russian and German, but really nothing more.
I have recently decided to honor his service with a plaque at the Mt. Soledad Veterans Memorial. In order to determine whether or not the Veteran is eligible for a plaque, the organization requires a DD-214 which I recently received. The DD-214 lists that he had served from June of 52 to June of 56 in the USAFSS. I would greatly appreciate any stories about my father from folks who may have served with him, he was very special to me.

Comments: Unit uncertain. Just checking to see if anyone remembers my father SSGT Joe Thomas, who served between 1950-1954, and died in 1980 soon after the restrictions on discussing AFSS activities began to ease. (He was proud to be able to tell me near the end of his life that he had done ELINT during his Air Force service.)
He served at Keesler AFB as a student and instructor, from which he courted his future wife and my future mother, who was from West Point MS and was then a student at the MS State College for Women.
Between March-May 1953 he served with the AFSS team supporting project 7.1 (Electromagnetic Effects from Nuclear Explosions) during Operation Upshot-Knothole at the Nevada Proving Ground, reporting from and returning to AFSS HQ at Brooks AFB. His specialty was described then as Radio Repairman.
He departed for Japan later in 1953, telling us much later that he was waiting in San Francisco for his ship when the Korean War armistice was signed. He described spending time on a Korean island, which I suppose was Paengnyong-do, based on the post-Armistice date and Larry Tarts volume III but I could be wrong. He enjoyed his time in the Far East very much.
I was lucky that he was able to see the beginning of my thirty-year active and reserve Navy career, and was hoping that I could piece together a little more of his Air Force service for his grandchildren. Thanks for any help!

Comments: Arrived at Osan In April 1959 and worked out of semi-trucks while they were finishing the concrete block facility on the Hill. First night on the mid-shift I was given a .45 semi to guard the back gate. What the h---? Didn't know the back from the front and never handled a .45. Lived in Quonsets - third one south of the latrine - my houseboy was Pak Su San who would swab the plywood deck with stove oil to keep the dust down.. Worked intercept for a time then translation. I was there when a NK fighter shot up a US Navy elint plane from Japan. That major was gone the next day. Best friends were Mike Hubert, Gary Walter and Dick Auger. Was offered Blue Sky but turned it down. They were building the concrete block barracks across the road when I left in 1960. Does anyone else remember the landing mat bridge across the drain ditch on the way to the snack bar named the Huey P. Long Bridge? F-100's were operational at that time. I see A-10's on the runway now via Google Earth. Of course the base and Osan are totally unrecognizable now. Enjoyed my tour - liked the work and had good friends. Visited China in '06 and had a ball. It was amazing how much Mandarin I remembered. It kept coming back to me after all these 50 years. Really impressed the young ladies - oh to be young again.

Comments: 1959/61 two tours although I was a 292 had a lot of friends 203/s. We use to visit the
Paradise Club and dance on Fri/Sat which was a lot of fun. Was on the Osan JudoTeam
and our Captain was Billy Borders (203). Met dozens of great guys. Went TDY to
Okinawa, Brady AB and Goodfellow. WE had a hell of a softball team and rarely lost
a game. Sure would like to hear from Bobby Hurley.

Comments: Comments: My grandfather, Avon Law completed training in 1952 at Scott Air Force Base in Illinois, he was then stationed in Adak working on radio/microwave towers. I am doing family research and am interested in any information, stories, pictures, etc you may have.
Thank you in advance.
