In 1961 they closed Yong

Comments: I am the youngest of Marvin L. Perry's 3 children. Sadly our dad passed away In Jan. 2007.
and now our mother (his wife) has also passed.

We have been uncovering bits and pieces of their young history, and are hoping to find people that can fill in some information for us.

From his discharge papers I have learned the following: He became Active in the USAF 15Sept52 - 14Sept56 plus 4 years reserves. After his basic training (guessing) he was stationed somewhere near/around Kissimmee Florida. I know this because mom spoke of having to fly to (Orlando?) Florida, alone sometime in Jan. 1953, arriving in a horrible rainstorm & having to wait for her new husband to pick her up. They lived off base for at least a year, maybe more. Eventually Marv got the word they'd be going to Korea. He & mom had to pack up and drive to her family in the Napa/Vallejo, CA area where she'd stay while he was gone. I believe he was shipped out of San Francisco on a US Marine ship. His document says he was a #53351 Body RPMN & REF, was assigned to the 5th Motor Vehicle Squadron and later to SAC. I do not know the dates, only that it says on his discharge paper that he was overseas for 1 1/2 years. He had also mentioned that just prior to being shipped back to the states he got to play some baseball for the USAF. So my best guess is he'd been over in (1954?) 1955-1956. He had a short leave ( Dec.1955 ) at some point, as my older brother
was born a couple of months before he came back home in 1956.
If there is anyone that could fill in anything we would love to hear from you. I know he was a pretty good paint & body man while there in addition to his other duties, as he opened up his own, P & L Auto Body after being discharged and some years later went back to the Surprise Valley/Susanville, CA area and went back to his families roots, cattle ranching.
I hope there is someone out there that has some knowledge they can share with us.
We have also found some od service photos...but they have been rolled up for so long that they tear very easily & we haven't yet found someone which can help us with that.
Thank you very much.

Comments: My father, John A. Fiermonte, Sr. , born in 1931 and from Auburn NY, served in Korea in early 50's (still working on exact dates in theater) in the USAF 5th Motor Transport Squadron (aka 5th Mule Train) out of Kunsan, I believe. Although I believe he may have been detached closer to Seoul? Details still emerging from his papers and effects. He is now deceased (Jan 9, 2016)
As a vehicle mechanic, he had grease running thru his veins, drove a wrecker and fixed trucks and other things in Korea. I have various pictures and patches etc Will see if I can post more details here's a legacy video with some details he did a few years back for the Korean War Vets digital memorial project based out of Syracuse NY

Comments: I finally got the information I was lacking to see if anyone might remember my Dad, Dan Cleary. He served in Korea with the 5th Mule Train, stationed at Yongdungpo, January - November 1953. He was a "yanky" from Pittsburgh and was at Goodfellow AFB just before going to Korea. He said he drove a "triangle" that included Yongdungpo, Kimpo, and one other location, which I didn't hear. We are trying to keep his 80th celebration a surprise so I didn't want to sound too interested. Does anyone know what the other point on the triangle might have been? Comments: I'm trying to assist Jim Huff, a member of this unit during the years 57-59. When he was released from AD in 1959 it was in a VA hospital (Minot ND). His DD-214 apparently was a hurried up affair, as it shows "N/A" in many of the blocks. At the time, he was young, didn't know better and, of course, didn't think anything of it. Lately he finds he has to obtain some sort of proof of service in Korea. A request to the Records Ctr in St Louis produced the info that his records, again, of course, were among those burned in the 1975 fire. If anyone remembers him, or has multi-personnel orders from back then showing his name, please contact me.

Comments: What an experience that was! I was there when things were pretty calm. All the other vets here were there when the action was pretty hot.

One of our duties was to use our 6x6's to go around and pick up Korean entertainment in the area and drop them at the various clubs.

I was a 2LT Admin and Maint Officer. One of my great regrets was that I wanted to get into the pits with the Korean mechanics and learn how they were able to remove and replace an engine in 4 to 6 hours but the NCO's, in their wisdom, talked me out of it.

We had three officers and about 160 enlisted at the time ... only one club where the First Sergeant and I had a reserved spot at the bar.

Other personnel were 2LT Jackie Junior Kane from Oklahoma, Major Nicky Patterson from NC, Captain Holland who took over as CO from Maj Patterson.

Made a lot of Korean friends, Johnnie the one armed Korean boss, folks from Ewha University, Seoul National University, Sygman Rhee's adopted son who later killed his natural family and committed suicide, all the guys from the ROK Honor Guard and Band.

We raised the first 49 star flag in a ceremony on our compound ... probably the first raising in the world if you consider that Korea is one of the first to see the date change because of its location west of the International Date Line.

Enough already. Contact me if you can. I have some stills and a video I shot if you're interested.

Comments: Assigned to 5th Motor Transport Sq., on detached service from Yong Dong Po from October '52 until Jan '53 (when K-46 was abandoned).

Our detachment was in a compound across the strip from the main base. We were right along the river, almost directly across from the tower.

Would like to contact anyone from the "Mule Train". Once had an alert for a ground attack because pilots read what they thought were signals from flashing lights against the hill beyond the river.

Turned out it was the flames from our makeshift shower. A breeze would make them flicker, and the pilots thought it was some sort of code. Anyone remember that?
