United States Air Force

Units

37th Troop Carrier Squadron
50th Troop Carrier Squadron
53rd Troop Carrier Squadron
61st Troop Carrier Squadron
62nd Troop Carrier Squadron

Detached from its parent wing, the 314th TCG with its newly modified C-119 Flying Boxcars, moved from Stewart AFB, Tennesse to arrive at Ashiya AB, Japan in late August 1950. From September through November 1950, it dropped ammunition and rations to UN frontline troops as they engaged the North Korean forces. It airlifted the 187th Airborne Regimental Combat Team to Kimpo AB. On October 20, the 314th TCG furnished the bulk of the aircraft in the airborne phase of the UN assault north of Pyongyang. It received a Distinguished Unit Citation for actions from November 28 through December 10, 1950. During this period the Chinese Communist Army encircled regiments of the 1st U.S. Marine and USA 7th Infantry Divisions near the Changjin Reservoir. The 314th TCG airdropped urgently needed ammunition, gasoline, and rations, as well as an eight-span M-2 Treadway bridge, allowing the besieged UN forces to extricate themselves along with their equipment. The group maintained an almost constant shuttle to front line troops in Korea, delivering supplies, ammunition, and fuel and, at times, moving and air-dropping troops. It continued to transport personnel and supplies from Japan to Korea for the rest of the war and evacuated UN prisoners of war when they were freed.

Comments: I'm looking for anyone who knew Matsuko Yoshidome in Ashiya, Japan, 1951-54. She was my birth mother; I was adopted when I was 3. She was already deceased when I "found" her, and I'd like to find out as much as I can about her. Thanks.

Comments: Am looking for information on C-119 tail number 49-0157. This
aircraft is presently at the Pima Air Museum. It is known that it
was assigned to the 314th but that is the only information the
museum has. They are presently restoring this aircraft and I would
like to be able to tell them which squadron it was assigned to so
they can put the correct colors on the nose and tail. If someone
has any information I would greatly appreciate it. There were
some of our aircraft that had nose art, maybe this aircraft had
some.

Keywords: My father (SSgt/TSgt Robert Veigel)was a member of the 37th TCS
at Sewart AFB from 1949 to 1955. He deployed to Japan with the
group during the Korean War. We lived in base housing from 1953
to 1955. I went to school on base when the school was located in
three barracks buildings(1952-1953) and then when it moved into
the new John Coleman School (1953 - 1955). The school was still
in use when I was last in the area about 5 years ago. Some of the
housing is still in use and there are only a few of the building left
on the base which were there when we were there.

Comments: Hello,

Attempting to locate a member of the 314th TCG that served during WWII. Purpose is to understand what members taken prisoner during their last mission did to obtain proof they were wounded before or during captivity.

A copilot of a C-47 was injured during crash landing due to enemy ground fire in France 7 June 1944. He also received frostbite during captivity.

Upon repatriation, he was not medically examined. Obviously, there is nothing annotated in military personnel and medical records.

Perhaps someone may have connections with other veterans that may provide an answer.

Regards,
Robert E. Johnson
