Comments: I was aboard the Segundo in 1958 and had a good friend, James R. Morrison, also a sonarman. I left the service in 1960.
My last contact with him, he was aboard the T.Roosavelt (SSBN) he was aboard on it's commissioning and my next contact with him. he married a Scottish girl. He also advanced to CWO.

Comments: My dad retired as a Chief Electricians Mate in 1959 and
his last boat was the Segundo. I remember Mom going to
the Embarcadero in San Diego to pick up things that Dad
sent home on other boats, Anything that would fit
through the hatch he said.
Any stories about Ed or Eddie Klimek or the Segundo,
I'd like to hear from you.
Tom

Comments: My father, William E. Northen, was on the Segundo in 1951 - 1952. He was 19 years old, an I.C. Electrician "3-striper", 6'5" tall and green-off-the-farm from central Texas. About January of 1952, a training incident occured where one of the destroyers ran over the Segundo while it was at periscope level. Afterwards,he had the portside watch and got a good look at the damage from the destroyer's screw to the conning tower and deck. My dad's memory is now fading somewhat and I would love to hear from someone regarding this time period or if anyone knew him then. Thanks so much, Vicki

Comments: I have a very heavy metal ship's badge from USS Segundo. It is the same sort of thing that I recognise as a gun's tompian cover from my own service in the Royal Navy. Until today I had no idea where it came from and had never heard of such a vessel - other than seeing this name on the badge. I served in the Royal Navy during World War 2 and helped return lease lend vessel HMS Rajah to Norfolk, Virginia after the war. I visited Maryland in May 2002 where I have a good American friend and sailed his yacht on Chesapeake Bay.
I will now give this badge of USS Segundo a proper place in my home and think about the good men who served in her.

Comments: I am bowplanes son, I am 33 years old and wanting to learn more about his military service. He was well retired before I was born so I do not know much about this period of his life.Except for some of the ports he visited and how happy he was describing the good times he had.I am ashamed to say I did not follow in his footsteps by enlisting in the navy. But I am currently in the army and have been for 15yrs now.If anyone out there has any old photo's or info.please contact me. Thanks Jesse

Comments: I can remember as a young lad going down to the Brisbane River [Australia] where I was fortunate in being allowed to board the USS Segundo. It must have been about 1945 or 1946. I think the boat was commanded by a Lt. Cmdr. Little, but perhaps my memory is playing tricks with me.
It is most interestin to have found information regarding you boet on the net.
Good luck to you all.

Comments: Please add the SEGUNDO to the list of ships that were involved. We arrived in Yokuska at the very beginning of the conflict in early July, then we went back again about 1 year later. Made 4 simulated war patrols 2 on each visit. Basically we were off Russian coast on all four patrols.
Thanks for your quick response. To the best of my memory, we were in Manila on 25 June l950 when the Korean situation kicked off. The boat was in Cavite, just across the Bay - believe it was on a Sunday. Marines rounded all of us up, and we went back to the boat and got underway the next morning for Japan. There were two other boats with us, and once we tied up in Japan one of them left for patrol duty, than the other, and finally we went. My best guess is that it was in late July l950 when we made our first run - we made one more before returning to San Diego. I believe we went back again in late 51 or early 52 - but, am not sure. I left the boat in April 53. I would think the Navy Awards Manual would have the dates that medals were earned for that service - do you have access to an Awards Manual? I am a retired Senior Chief Yeoman, got out in 1972 - also, retired from the newspaper here in Norfolk/Virginia Beach/Chesapeake/Portsmouth area. I don't have a great deal to do, except play golf. I keep in contact with 5 or 6 other Segundo sailors of that era, and one of them has sailing lists from the '50/51 era. Also, the Naval Base Uniform Shop should have an Awards Manual, and if not SubLant Staff certainly should have one. Please let me know the detail you need, and if I can be of further assistance. Frankly, I have had very little official contact with the service since I retired 4 May 72. Left from SubLant Staff - was Chief in Charge of the Flag Office when I retired - again
