Comments: My father, Alexander Surko, served aboard USS Perkins
(DDR-877) during the Korean War. I believe he was the
CIC Officer. He doesn't talk much about the Korean
War, except to express his rage with some
photographers who took pictures of wounded shipmates
being taken off Perkins after the ship was hit by
enemy shore fire. He notes with pride that Perkins
set the Navy's all-time record for continuous days on
the bombline. And he likes to talk about wardroom
raids for the Esther Williams pennant. I'm looking
for any stories and/or photos shipmates would care to
share from the Korean War. Thanks.

I am currently typing his manuscript for a book about his experiences aboard ship and during the time he hitchhiked across country on leave. The book has much in regard to a Korean mission and life onboard ship during a difficult period. If anyone is interested in purchasing a copy of this book upon its release the first part of 2007, please email me and we will make sure a copy is made available. Also, if anyone wishes to get in contact with my uncle I will be most happy to contact him on your behalf so he can reconnect with old shipmates and those who would like to learn more about Naval history. Thank you all for being an important part of America's history and defense of our wonderful country. Regards!

Comments: I am proud to have served on the Perkins for a little over 3 years during the war. It was a great experience for a 17 year old kid to grow up on the Perkins. My closest friend was a retread from WW2 by the name of Bill Names. There were a lot of great guys on the ship at that time. I am nearly 70 so many of my old shipmates are really getting up there - especially the WW2 Navy Reserves called back to service at the start of the war. I would love to hear from anyone from the Perkins - especially those that were there when I was. Good luck to all the Perkins crew wherever they may be!

Comments: My father served on the USS Perkins in 1956-1959? My memory is a little sketchy but he was also one of the men who "plucked" the space cone from the ocean, when they sent the monkey into space. I think they called it the Little Joe mission? I also have footage of the USS perkins at sea on video. It is all real interesting to me and I was wondering if there are newspaper articles and information on the USS Perkins during this time. He was in the Navy, but also in the Marines (helicopter mechanic). He was stationed at the New River Air Facility, which I believe is in North Carolina. I was born at Camp Lejeune. Any information on any of this would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

It was something like The Perfect Storm, although very much more graphic and far more realistic. In the movie the sounds and wind were not depicted in anywhere the realism of an actual experience. That's Hollywood for you. Sebastian Junger only wrote from a jouranilstic point of view, not from an actual experience. The book was far better than the movie, which was obviously done on a Hollywood set with no substance. The actual experience was far different.
