Comments: My Dad was in Camp Pendleton, 3rd Marines in 1951. He was a combat photographer
in a group I was told was called Puller's Raiders. I have many photos he left to
me when he passed in 1995. Among them are the shots he took going up the gang
plank of a troop ship headed to Korea. He was taken off the ship before it could
depart and told to pick two assistants. He saved those men's lives without
realizing it. They were sent to special radiological training instead of combat.
It was after he was discharged that he learned that not one of the men on that
ship came home from the war. The two buddies he fooed became his lifelong
friends. Instead of fighting in the miserable battles following the Chosen
Reservoir, the three friends reported to Camp Mercury, near Las Vegas. Dad's
orders were to photograph an atomic bomb detonation in the Tumbler Snapper
series. It was the Charlie shot that found him standing in a trench 8 feet deep
with a 4 foot tall platform built in, only 3,000 yards from ground zero. The
three of them erected banks of cameras that could be triggered then retracted
(for when the shock wave hit) then re-erected to shoot more shots of the
resulting cloud. Dad intended to bring his own camera loaded with color film to
the test. He hid it under a footlocker full of flash bulbs. The test was to use
the last Fatman style casing left over from the WWII era. It was to be dropped
from a modified B29 (called a B50). The test was like being present for a shuttle
launch, Dad said. They kept canceling it for various reasons. One day he left his
camera back at camp Mercury, thinking it would be another dry run. It was not.
Dad described an all encompassing bright light that was seen in spite of him
turning his back, closing his eyes and huddling at the bottom of the trench. He
waited the required 3 seconds, climbed onto the platform, then triggered his
cameras. He began shooting pictures with his hand held camera until everyone was
ordered to take cover. He retracted his cameras and simply hunkered down on the
platform as the wave of thick air came towards them. He was knocked off of the
platform and covered in radioactive dust and debris. 60 minutes later, being a
corporal, he was ordered to take 40 men and march straight through the mushroom
cloud to ground zero. Dad's photos of ground zero were all fogged from the
radioactivity. A fellow Marine picked up a rock and pocketed it as a souvenir.
They spent 15 minutes at ground zero. Then they proceeded on to the other side of
the shot area where men with Geiger Counters checked them. The man with the
souvenir rock was instantly discovered. They tried their best to decontaminate
the man. He was stripped naked and scrubbed red as an Indian. (Within 3 days, his
right hand was swollen to the size of a baseball glove and he was taken away in
an ambulance.) Dad had to re-cross ground zero and take a second group of 40
Marines through ground zero. Then he walked back through the area a fourth time
to develop his photos. He thought it odd that all of the other Marines and Army
personnel all wore film badges. He and the 80 Marines he escorted onto ground
zero did NOT have any film badges. In the mobile dark room Dad had to make 20
copies of each exposure. Frustrated that he had no film of his own to develop, he
took the 12 best shots, exposed the 8 x 10 photo sheets but but them back into
the paper safe instead developing the photographs. When they took the Marine with
the swollen hand away, Dad went back to the darkroom and developed those 12
pictures. He mailed them home to New York. His two friends decided not to have
children. Mom and Dad waited three years before they had me. I saw the photos
several times as I grew up, always knowing they were top secret. When I was old
enough, I joined the Army in 1972 with a contract that would make me a radio / TV
broadcaster. I was sent to AFKN in Seoul, Korea. I was there in the AFKN TV
control room for the 1974 assassination attempt on Park Chun Hee. His wife was
killed. I loved the country so much that, after discharge, I returned to teach
English and live there. When President Park was killed in 1980, the country
erupted into a little-known Civil War. My ex-wife and I hopped a train and headed
south, to escape the riots. We got as far as Kwangju. Just like we have our 9-11,
the Koreans have 5-18. They call it the Kwangju Massacre. Look it up and multiply
the official body count by 10. My wife and I found ourselves trapped in the
middle of this battle between the 11th Korean Special Warfare Division and the
700,000 citizens of Kwangju. With their bare hands and captured police arms, they
pushed the Korean Army out of the city and briefly established their own
government. My ex and I walked out of Cholla Province across the rice paddies.
Surrounding villages all had casualties as they had tried to send help to
Kwangju. A friendly farmer stuffed us into a pig crate, covered us in Korean
radishes and snuck us through the military check points on his flat bed tractor.
We hitch hiked back to Seoul. It was time to head back to the States. When Dad
passed away from cancer in 1995, the Atomic Bomb photos were given to me. In
2006, I went to the Atomic Testing Museum in Las Vegas and offered the photos to
them for scanning. They were happy to get them but were a bit disconcerted as the
pictures contradicted a new book they had published in a couple of places. It is
satisfying to know that Dad's pictures had re-written history. I will share these
photos if requested.

He passed away a few years ago and I am writing a short biography of his service, but failed to gather all of the information before he passed. He wrote my mother-in-law with the following address in June 1953:
RL Hanks
153 Co.
3rd Replacement Bn
Staging Regiment
Camp Pendleton, CA

I have his DD-214, but it doesn't detail the unit he was attached to during his overseas duty. It does say he had 9 months, 19 days Foreign and/or Sea Service, which I assume is his time in Korea. I have scoured the 1st, 3rd and 7th Marine Regiment diaries online, but can't really determine if any of these were any of the Regiments he served in and I can't find any information about staging regiments. Thank you for the help.

Comments: I am looking for any information about my grandfather
James W. Taylor. He was a United States Marine who
took part in the Chosin Reservoir. He wouldnt talk
much about his time in the military, what he did tell
us was that he was called blanket ass because of
the way he would bundle himself into his blanket and
stand over a small fire like an indian to try and
keep warm, he also told my uncles a story about how
he was captured by the enemies and was a POW, they
wanted him to show them how to use a weapon they had
never seen before that shot fire, upon agreeing to do
so he caught his enemey caprtures on fire and ran for
days heading north until he came to a US camp. He
also told them about how he would stick potatoes and
other things into tanks to make them explode. My
grandfather was shot in the back and lived the rest
of his life with the bullet in his back. He suffered
frost bite on his hands, nose and feet. they wanted
to amputate but he refused to allow them to do so. I
have my grandfathers DD214 having no background in
the military I am having a hard time understanding
what alot of the information means. He is listed as a
Sargeant but I am not sure if that is a rank he
earned after the Chosin Reservoir or before. His
title and specialty number is: 0351-Anitassult
Tankman. He recieved numerous medals that he refused
to claim,they are as listed.

China Service Medal,
Korean Service Medal w/5*, National Def. ribbon,
Purple Heart w/2*, Presidential Unit Cit. w/1*,
Japanese Occ. ribbion, United Nations Ribbon, Dist.
rifle Medal (Navy), Korean PUC, Good Conduct w/1*

If
anyone could help me to understand exactly what my
grandfather did to earn these medals I would be so
grateful. Although he never spoke of his time in the
service I was and always have been extremely proud of
my grandfathers service. He and I were very close
until he passed away in 2009. I wacthed the
documentary Chosin and I am now on a mission to
learn as much as I can about his service, how he
earned his medals, anything I can learn at all. I am
not able to tell what division he was with or
anything like that, but like I said I have no
background in the military and alot of what is on his
DD214 is like a foregin language to me. My ultimate
dream would be to hear from men who served with my
grandpa and maybe even find some pictures of him
during his service. anything you can help me with
Please Please Please do so. I can send you a copy of
his DD214 so you can help me understand it more.
Thank you very very much. and to all of those who put
there life on the line to fight for our freedom I am
forever grateful for your bravery, words cant begin
to express how appriciative I am for your courage.
may God Bless you all!!!!!!!

Comments: Does anyone out there remember Ray Smith, who served in Baker Reg, 3rd Battalion 1953-1954? He was a medic, newly married, and I was born while he was over there. He adopted a Korean german shepherd named Duffy. I would appreciate any information about him that you may have.
