Comments: My father-in-law Roy Stanford served as the ships medical officer on the USS Whetstone from 1951-1953. I have been trying to help him find his long lost friend and shipmate Lt.Commander James Rohwer the ships supply officer who served at the same time on the Whetstone with my father-in-law. He was not positive on the spelling of the last name of James Rohwer,it could also be spelt Rowher.I was told by my father-in-law that James Rohwer lived in Ft.Lauderdale,Florida in the late 1950's. James Rohwer also had family that lived in Sacramento,Ca. in that same time period in the late 1950's .My father-in- law does not know if James Rohwer died during his Navy service or if he is still alive today. Any information would be appericated. Thank You.. Jim Keller IV

Comments: Would like to hear from others who served on the Whetstone or LSMR-409 during Koreab Conflict.

Dear Military Friends,
Even though I have not yet been able to contact any particular person who was actually on the LSMR-409 or the USS Whetstone at the same time as me, I have enjoyed hearing from each of you. I am grateful for your response and for any assistance. From you I learned how the LSM was changed to the LSMR, that it served in WWII, Korean War, and then again in Vietnam. That¹s quite a history of service to our country!
My search began with encouragement from our son and daughter-in-law. Our son and his wife were interested in video taping me talking about a scrapbook that I kept during the Korean War. From that encounter, they found info on the reunion of the personnel who served on the USS Whetstone.
Even though I served on the Whetstone, my true love is the 409, because of the time served and the experiences I was involved in on that ship.

The Whetstone Assn has over 700 members and publishes a free 10 page newsletter every quarter. Write me for a free member's address list (snail mail and email). Come on in , the waters fine.

I was surfing the net and came across your web page regarding the USS
Whetstone and I was curious if anyone recalls my brother. His name
was Larry E. Nelson from LaCrosse Wisconsin. My brother served
aboard the USS Whetstone in 1960 - 1961. He was a Fire Control
Technician and had returned from a tour to the south pacific and came
home on leave for the Christmas holidays(1961) and was killed in an
auto accident on Christmas Eve.
Could you provide any information about the USS Whetstone and when it
may have been decomissioned, etc. Your help would be appreciated.
Thank you.
