Comments: I am looking for any information about my father who was a Navy Hospital Corpsman. He never talked much about the war when he was alive. I do know that he was injured by a grenade blast and received several medals which have disappeared over time. I do have a newspaper clipping of him from the "Chicago Herald-10/09/1950". It shows him with Marine Sgt. Leon Reese of Huntsville, AL. They are holding a flag and preparing to raise it again over the American Consulate in Seoul. If anyone has any information about my father or this time of the war, I would be extremely grateful.

He never talked much about it, but his fingers, toes, and feet gave him problems throughout life. He retired after a career in the navy and passed away in 1980. He taught my younger brother and I how to hunt and shoot. We miss him. He was a great uncle. Any information would be appreciated. Comments: I am looking for information on Corpsman Ted Paillette. I am not sure if that is the correct spelling of his name. He went through medical training with my father and went to Korea. He was possibly KIA in Korea in 1952. His name does not appear on any KIA rosters however. It did appear on a 1st MarDiv "honor roll" posted sometime in 1950 of which my father has carried since then.

I am wondering if there was a mistake and Ted might still be living. My father has had survivors guilt since 1953 when he returned home and his buddy did not. I would like to close the loop on this issue for him as he is getting up in age. Any information at all would be helpful. Thanks

Comments: My father, HM3 Lowell F. "Lou" Leibold, was a World War II "re-tread" and a member of "Easy Med" from '51-'52. He died in 1994, but left me with Jap flags and rifles from Shuri Castle, as well as many photographs of Easy Med's operations in the months just after Chosin.
Also for Easy Med veterans: Life Magazine of August 10, 1953, features photos of your unit while in operation near Panmunjom, at the time of the signing of the truce. A reprint of the magazine may be obtained from Life Magazine's Archive Section, and is well worth the price of $20.00. The magazine features both the articles' "How The Truce Came To Korea," and "Death In The Gaze Of Prayerful Men." If you are a former member of Easy, you'll doubtless enjoy this issue.
For all you Corpsmen and Marines who served with Dad, I say, "Arrirang," and "Idio-ship-sho!"
May God bless all the men who served in "The Land Of The Morning Calm." Our country is a far better place because of you.

Comments:
greetings all,

I posted this on the Consolation (hospital ship) board, but I guess it also belongs here on EASY MED, as I believe that is the "unit" that my dad was in as a medical corpsman in Korea.

I thought I would make a post here and see if any of this makes a connection for someone. My dad, JAMES DUANE (JIM) HASWELL was in Korea, not sure the exact years, but definitely in 52 and 53. He was a medical corpsman in the 1st marine division, but I don't know unit. I believe he was with the EASY MED field hospital and not Able Med.

He was burned in a bunker fire on the front line and jeeped on stretcher to Battalian Aide. From there took a (sounds like he's just catching a ride) Bell helicopter ride on the outside riggers (or whatever they are called), to the EASY MED field hospital.

He said that a fellow medical corpsman, JIM FARRELL (sp?), was on the frontline with him and took care of his wounds and rode in the jeep to Battalian and that FARRELL SAVED HIS LIFE. If you know this Jim Farrell, please send me some e-mail and I can hook you up with my dad for a reunion, if you like.

EASY MED shipped him to the DANISH hospital ship JUTLANDIA (or Jatlandia?) first I think and then he went to the CONSOLATION hospital ship, I believe. Dad (Jim Haswell) remembers the surgeon's name on the American ship as DOCTOR DIBBLE. Dad says he remembers the surgeon well because he was "awake" in surgery when they were literally pulling and scraping his burned skin off and, being a medic himself, he said to the surgeon, "hey, you can't do that to me without giving me something first." heh.

It is possible that the ship was the REPOSE, but I'm pretty sure he said the CONSOLATION. It went to port of call at YOKUSKA (sp?), JAPAN near YOKAHAMA where he went to the hospital ashore, which I don't know the name of.

The captain of the American ship (whichever it was - Consolation or Repose) turned out to be a childhood friend of my dad's mother (WINIFRED THELMA SNELL HASWELL), from BEULAH/BENZONIA, MICHIGAN. Now that's a small world isn't it?

well that's it for now. everyone take care and we are thinking of you all and all those that fought on this Memorial Day and all the rest of the year as well.

take care, jl haswell
