67th Tactical Reconnaissance Wing

United States Air Force

Units

67th Tactical Reconnaissance Group February 25, 1951

6166th Air Weather Recon Flight attached February 25, 1951-.

Activated on 25 February 1951, the 67th TRW replaced the inactivated 543rd TSG. By August, the wing had consolidated its subordinate elements at Kimpo AB. Gradually overcoming difficulties, it soon was providing adequate aerial intelligence for both air and ground units. However, organizational changes could not solve fundamental problems - the lack of suitable aircraft, appropriate photographic equipment, and sufficient numbers of trained personnel. The 67th TRW sought in-theater remedies for these problems, including special classes and on-the-job training; creative experimentation with aircraft, cameras, night lighting, and photographic techniques; and the modification of six Sabrejets to RF-86 configuration for reconnaissance work. Other aircraft flown on reconnaissance missions included the RB-26, RF-51, and RF-80. For visual reconnaissance, the 67th TRW relied on T-6s and C-47s for a short time. It also performed weather reconnaissance on a regular basis, using the unarmed WB-26s of the attached 6166th Air Weather Reconnaissance Flight.

Comments: Does anyone remember my father, Rene H. Brousseau, USAF, Rank A2c? He was assigned to the 67th Tactical Recon. Wing at Kimpo Air Base from February 1952 to February 1953. He was a photographer and photo lab technician. He was quartered in a tent structure called Paradise Inn with seven others. His photo lab OIC was a Capt. White and his NCOIC was SSgt Paul Hunter. I have lots of photos and still relish his photo album with images of him with his Speed Graphic and M2 Carbine. He was there when a crippled B29 came in at night weaving around to find the runway in the dark until the lights were turned on. The navigator on board was killed during the mission. My dad always said the Korea was coldest place on earth.

Any response would be appreciated. Thank you!

He turned 93 yrs old in Sept 2022, but is still motoring. He has relayed several stories from his days in Korea. Also, I believe he remains in e-mail contact with a gentleman who flew B-26s there at about the same time.

Comments: Greetings to all,

My uncle, 2LT Roger Clifton Sprague was was the pilot of a RB-26C Invader bomber with the 12th Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron, 67th Tactical Reconnaissance Wing. On September 18, 1953,
he was killed when his aircraft crashed 27 miles northeast of Taegu, South Korea.

My understanding of the circumstances of this crash are that his plane was hit and disabled. He ordered the crew to bail out, while he remained with the plane to try to; (and I've heard two versions) 1, save the plane or 2, prevent the plane from landing in a village. I've heard also that his plane came under friendly fire. At any rate, I'm wondering if there are any out there that would know of this incident, and that would be able to shed more info on it, also if any of the remaining crew members are still with us, and if so, would they be willing to talk about it. My mother, (his sister) passed on many years ago, and never said anything of the fate of the rest of the crew. Any help would be appreciated. I have another e-mail address you can use, fiddler_pa@yahoo.com, and I'm also on FB as Paul R Amey. I would welcome any an all info on this.

Thanks in advance,

Paul Amey

Comments: My dad, TSgt ( promoted to MSgt while over there)
Robert D. Bob Perkins served with Hq. Sq., 67th TRW
from Jul. '51 to Jul. '52. He also went by Perky.
I believe the wing still may have been at Taegu when
he got there, and helped move it to Kimpo when it was
re-captured by the Americans.

Dad worked in personnel and was NCOIC,
Classification. He also served as acting Wing Sgt.
Major for awhile. He never talked about his
experience over thee other than the fact that it was
bitterly cold in the winter and unbearably hot in the
summer. He also talked about pulling guard duty on
cold winter nights, especially New Years Eve, 1951.

Dad retired from the AF in 1967 after serving 25
years. He passed away in 1987 at the age of 65.

I think all you guys were heroes for serving over
there in such austere and sometimes hostile
conditions. If I told dad he was a hero, he would
just say he was doing his job!

The day Major Williams was KIA Masterson and I were flying a misson to Anju. I knew and admired Clyde Voss as any Aggie class of '49 would a member of the class of '41. A good man and and good pilot. I read with interest the hollywood story "Mother" Rigsby put together. Why did I think he was the hero? Then I read the letter Col. Smith wrote to the Williams famly. That is exactly the way I remember it.

I have been doing some research on ancesters in the Civil War and began to wonder if my 8 grand children would be able to find my record in Korea. So I just checked and guess what? I couldn't find a track. That was a great time for me. I loved the training at Shaw. Shrekingost saved my butt one day by finding a port side tiptank shakle wouldn't stay locked. I had landed that plane the day before with a full tank on the left side and no tip on the right.

I thought Ed Stoltz and Ralph White , Jim Furholmen and Scattergood were some of the best I came across in the AF.

I was pleased to serve also as WPIO for both Chickering and Andrews. I would have loved to stay in recce work but some how mats got me and it went down hill from there.

I can fill some spots on Earl Guthrie's flying after he left the service. If anybody is interested. He became a really outstanding test pilot for GD. Even did some fine Recce work in a B-58 during the Cuban missile crisis. In this material he is shown as deceased. I went to his funeral.

I'd love to hear from anybody in the April to Nov, 1952 time block. Or anybody else.

Regards,

John E. Orr

Comments: I'm trying to find out about the aviators' scarves. I've seen some photos of yellow scarves, and other photos of yellow scarves with black checkerboard. Does anyone know any details on these? Thanks.
