The 58th FBG flew F-84s in primarily close air support and ground attack missions from July 1952. Having entered the Korean War with the slow, short-ranged F-84D ThunderJets, the 58th transitioned in late 1952 to the new "G" model, designed with more speed and range. Targets were enemy ports, railroads, and airfields. The group attacked the major supply port of Sinuiju in September, inflicting heavy damage to the target area without loss of personnel or aircraft. Combining with other fighter-bomber units, it attacked the Kumgang Political School at Odong-ni in October 1952 and the North Korean tank and infantry school at Kangso in February 1953. In May, the 58th FBG bombed North Korean dams, flooding enemy lines of communication and rice fields. On July 27, 1953, the 58th FBG attacked the runway at Kanggye and, with the 49th FBG, bombed Sunan Airfield for the final action of fighter-bombers in the Korean War.

Comments: I am researching my uncle. He retired as Maj General in 1972 (Died Dec 25, 1999). He was the commander of the 58th in 1953. Any info would be greatly appreciated. (I am a Marine veteran) .. Thanks

Comments: My Father passed away 6 years ago, but he had a patch from his time in the Air Force and Korean War. I came across this squadron patch of his and i was wondering about it. It is gray and blue and has an eagle with a red head and the body of what looks to me like a fighter jet. 5 stars on one side of the eagle and 8 stars on the other. Comments: 1/Lt. Bob Ford was killed in an F-86F crash on March 11, 1957. He was a pilot in the 311th Fighter-Bomber Squadron, 58th FB Wing, Osan AFB, Korea.
I was stationed in the 311th during that time and have done a memorial web site honoring Bob Ford. At the request of his widow, Libby, I have also included my memories of that year in Korea and Formosa. Photos on the web site and in my memoirs might bring back memories.
