319th Fighter Interceptor Squadron

United States Air Force

In December 1951, Fifth Air Force determined a need for additional nighttime all-weather air interceptors in the Seoul area. In response, the U.S. Air Force provided the F-94-equipped 319th FIS, which moved from Moses Lake AFB, Washington, to Suwon AB in February and early March 1952. Until November, Fifth Air Force restricted the use of the Starfires to local air defense in order to prevent the possible compromise of its airborne intercept radar equipment in a loss over enemy-held territory. From November until the end of the conflict, the 319th used F-94s to maintain fighter screens between the Yalu and Chongchon Rivers, helping to protect B-29s from enemy interceptors.

Comments: I was going through slides from my father, he was in the Navy, but he appears to have been in the Communication department of the 319th AF in Korea. I uploaded a few dozen slides, I don’t know anyone other than my father (he passed away in 1991). If anyone is interested in seeing photos, let me know. Comments: I read all the published letters as of June 2016, particularly those that included their service time at K-13 being 1953 and 1954. I arrived there in early 1953 and departed early April 1954.
My memory for names never was GOOD, therefore none of the names mentioned in the letters were familiar to me. There are only two names I do remember, Pappy (nickname) Chelf and Hector Gonzales. Pappy taught me how to play cribbage and we spent many hours playing this game. Unfortunately, I have not played it since K-13!
Hector and I knew each other from Weapons Maintinance School at Lowry A.B. in Denver in the summer of 1952. We have continued to converse with each other 1 or 2 times a year. Hector is on the west coast, San Luis Obispo while I live on the east coast in N.J.
I was in the BORE SIGHT CREW.
A crew chief would tow a plane that required adjustment of the four .50 caliper machine guns to a firing range on the other side of the base where we would adjust the asmuth and elevation of each gun to fire a short burst of bullets close to the center of a target about 1,000 feet down range. That is a short discription of the process.
I remember our CO and his RO being killed in a crash while on patrol one night. As I recall, as the story goes, they were in persuit of a BEDCHECK CHARLIE and were unable to pull out of a dive they were in.
Another CO we had for a short time, his name I do not remember, was releived of his command reportedly for flying while being under the influence of alchohol. I met him again shortly after arriving at my next duty station at Grandview AFB about 15 miles south of Kansas City, MO. He saw me and a buddy of mine at the PX getting a snack and waved us over to his table to chat. He was a colonel at the time and was just like one of the guys, rank didn't matter.
If anyone happens to remember Pappy Chelf and knows anything about him, please let me know. If anyone else from the boresight crew reads this, please respond as well.
In March of 1956 I was discharged with the rank of S/Sgt.

Comments: Well, it's been almost 60 years since leaving the 319th Fighter Interceptor Squadron at K13 Suwon Korea. I arrived at K13 two weeks before the Armistice was signed in 1953. I was a Gen. Jet Aircraft Mechanic and worked on F94B Aircraft. Like most of us there, we made friends, worked hard, played hard, went on R and R, drank ASAHI beer, had good and bad times but, survived it all. For me my time with the 319th was the best year of my service in the USAF. The Quonset Huts that we stayed in had various painted name signs on the entrance doors: Fubar Club, Figmo Hotel, Korean Vets Club, Old Folks Home, Monroe Hotel etc. Does anyone remember them??? I left K13 in late summer 1954. Sailed from Yokohama on the USS Jackson and arrived in San Francisco July 8, 1954. My last assignment was at Tyndall AFB and I was discharged there in March 1956. My Best Wishes To All Veterans. LIFT YOUR HEAD AND HOLD IT HIGH THE 319TH IS PASSING BY
