Comments: I am looking for information about a cousin who went missing in Korea. I have this description:
Major Mouton led a three aircraft flight, comprising himself, Lt J.O. Holtzhausen in the No.2 position and Capt van der Merwe in the No.3 position. Their target was a railroad at YE5004, which they attacked from 7500 feet. Visibility over the target was poor, with low cloud and haze. Prior to his attack, Major Mouton noticed that both his No.2 and No.3 were in position, and after the attack he headed for the form up point and called his flight to check in. Only No.3 did so. On calling Lt Holtzhausen again, Major Mouton received a response, to the effect that Lt Holtzhausen was joining an American flight for the return home. However, he failed to arrive with any of the American flights involved in the attack, and was not heard of again. He was declared dead, but I wonder if his Mustang or the wreck has ever been found?
Does anybody today know where YE5004 was?

Comments: My Late Brother, NIELS LUDWIG HANSEN - Searved as a PILOT in the Korean War -1951-53. I would like to hear from anyone who could have any information, that knew or remembers him, his Rank, Squadron etc. he was a young Farmer from Kaffir River, Bloemfontein, also a keen Violinest, his Violin went with him to Korea. I understand he played for the troops ? I was very young at the time and all I remember is - He was a Fighter Pilot ( one of the Volintears ) I have TWO Photos of him, one standing in front of his plane in PILOT gear, a Banner around his neck with - 75 KOREA - SORTIES - KRYGSVLUGTE - and the good old Springbucks on either side ( I think taken on arrival back in South Africa. ) the other is of NIELS with the GROUND STAFFS AIR CREWS of SOUTH AFRICA taken in KOREA.? I have a news paper cutting, The Friend Bloemfontein, ( no date ) an interview with Niels - there were 14 Pupil Pilots presented with their wings at a parade at The NIGEL AIR STATION Niels was third on the course, but received the Highest Grading for Practical Flying. He retired as a Farmer and passed away in 1976-77 in Bloemfontein, South Africa.

Comments: My wife a korean war baby, was born shortly before
her father Capt Badenhorst was declared missing in
action while leading a low level recconaissance
mission over the Sinanju Pah to Eongju Road Korea,
the 4 aircaft in the squadron were all mustangs, Capt
Badenhorst was hit by heavy flack and his aircraft
burst into flames then crashed into the village of
Sinanju, unfortunately due to the heavy flack his
compatriots could not confirm if by some chance he
managed to escape the wreck, therefore he has been
declared missing in action by the Foreign Service of
the USA letter dated 15th October 1952, unfortunately
this declaration has meant that the family never had
final closure. Capt Badenhorst received the DFC, The
Air Medal and three Oak leaf clusters from the USA.

Comments: I am a South African national and am currently
completing my masters degree in architecture at a
University in South Korea. I am doing my thesis
design project and want to dedicate this document to
the South African Soldiers who fought in the Korean
War. I will be designing a memorial museum for these
individuals. I am on the lookout for any information
that would help me find a relevant site in South
Korea. Or just anything that would help me gain some
inspiration or insight into the lives of these
people. The Korean war is still a sensitive topic in
this country and I think to bring some awareness to
Koreans and to the world through architecture would
be of benefit to all.

Comments: While at K-46, I served as Armament Officer for the 12th Fighter-Bomber Squadron as a 2nd. Lt., USAF. We moved to K-55 when its construction was completed and soon "stood-down" while the transition was made from F-51 aircraft to F-86's. I then served (as a 1st. Lt.) as supervisor of the Group's consolidated Radar/Gunsight maintenance organization. About a third of my 60 people were from 2 Squadron, South African Air Force. These airmen were among the finest, best trained, most disciplined, and technnically competent with whom I ever had the pleasure to work. My "right hand" was SAAF Flight Sgt. Jock Meyers, to whom I will be eternally grateful.

Comments: My dad, a volunteer Armourer in Korea, passed away on 20 March 2008. He was so proud of his service in Korea and equally proud of the South African and American pilots.
He spoke so highly of the US forces. He said they were so kind and shared their warm clothes and their rations with the South Africans.
My Dad was 75 when he died and I miss him. I don't think I told him that he did a great job in Korea when he was only 18 or 19. So I want everyone to know that he was a great man and he was very proud of his achievments in Korea.
Yours
