Comments: My name is Joan Marie Pellerin Esposo, and I am writing to you to find out whether you might be able to assist me in finding out information about my uncle, who was lost at sea in a Navy plane crash off the coast of San Diego on November 10, 1953. My uncle was William James Pellerin (my brother was named after him), and I believe that he was serving with VS 21 as an Aviation Machinist’s Mate at that time. I found your name at the following website: http://www.koreanwar.org/html/units/navy/vs21.htm
The reason that I’m writing after all of these years is to try to learn about my uncle – what he was like, whether he talked about his family at all, was he a “ladies man” (like my dad!), etc. I’ve always wondered about what my uncle’s job was as an “aviation machinist’s mate,” and have also been curious about the accident itself. My father, Donald Pellerin (deceased in January, 1993), was Uncle Bill’s younger brother, and it was clear that he idolized his brother, and was extremely troubled by his death (he lost both of his parents shortly thereafter), and so wouldn’t talk about his brother much at all.
If you are able to help me to contact people that might have known my uncle, or who may be familiar with the accident, or perhaps point me in the right direction, I would be very grateful. My contact information is written below.
Thank you so much for your time and understanding.
Aloha,
Joan Esposo

Comments: Would really like to hear from any of you guys who flew on the "Magic Carpet" !!!
Keywords: I was with VS-21 from 1951 to 1953, except when the squadron sent me to Combat Aircrew School, in Hawaii. We were flying AF-2S and AF-2W (Prior to that we had TBM's) in hunter/killer operations. We visited Guam, Okinawa, Hong Kong and of course Japan. I remember Vern Goffin, George Geppelt, the Eliott brothers, George Richardson, Billy Trueblood, Perry Cagle, and especially Joe Sprague and Bill Pellerin (who lost there lives in a night training flight off San Diego. I'm sure there are more, and I'll get back here for more input, when I check out my cruise book.
