Comments: Doctors and nurses ( and corpsmen) saved many lives during those years ... our own military folk as well as UN and Chinese, No. Korean prisoners. Patients were as young or younger than I was at 18 years. There was much pain in the wards - and fear on the part of prisoners who couldn't believe we were trying to help them. There was joy, too, when an expected death turned into a transfer to Japan and life.

Much credit due to helicopter crews who brought wounded to the Repose flightdeck in rough situations. . . and to the people in the Aid Stations ashore patching up the wounded so they could be transported to us by truck or copter... or packed into body bags. Another dangerous and dirty job.

I remember KMC wounded who objected to having their long hair cut because that was the Chinese style ... and picking out the maggots from ears and elsewhere ... and a burly US Marine crying because his friend didn't make it ... lots of things like that happened every day.

It has been many years and few remember or care anymore. I remember and respect those who did so much to stop the flow of blood while maintaining a cheerful, upbeat attitude so their fellow workers would not give up hope. It was a place to learn how to hope and to learn a little bit about life and about death.

Comments: My father was a corpsman on the Repose from September (I think) 1950 to December 1951. His name was Robert (Bob) Weldon. He was buddies with two guys: Moriarti ("Mo") and Robert Wallace. Does anyone remember him or his buddies? Dad died in August 1997. To that time, he considered these guys (especially Wallace) his best friends. Anything that anyone remembers would be greatly appreciated, as he didn't talk a whole lot about it (only here and there) and now that he's gone, I'd like some insights into what had to have been one of the most (if not the most) defining part of his life. Thank you for any info you can provide.

Comments: My dad was a Medic on the Repose during the Korean War although I don't the years. One of the crew members drew a caricature of him wearing a gun holster with a hypodermic needle in each hand and I think they called him "Kid Taylor". His name is Willis Taylor and I would like to be able get him in touch with anyone who served with him and may remember him. He doesn't have e-mail but if you contact me, I would be happy to put you in touch with him. This is part of my Father's Day gift to him.

will remain tell I'm gone are the friends I could not bring home with me and the heartbreak of those
left on foreign soil. Each of us has that certain moment's we can recall or a flash of a memory that

Comments: Comments: greetings all,

I posted this on the Consolation (hospital ship) and EASY MED boards, but I guess it also belongs here on REPOSE also.

I thought I would make a post here and see if any of this makes a connection for someone. My dad, JAMES DUANE (JIM) HASWELL was in Korea, not sure the exact years, but definitely in 52 and 53. He was a medical corpsman in the 1st marine division, but I don't know unit. I believe he was with the EASY MED field hospital and not Able Med.

He was burned in a bunker fire on the front line and jeeped on stretcher to Battalian Aide. From there took a (sounds like he's just catching a ride) Bell helicopter ride on the outside riggers (or whatever they are called), to the EASY MED field hospital.

He said that a fellow medical corpsman, JIM FARRELL (sp?), was on the frontline with him and took care of his wounds and rode in the jeep to Battalian and that FARRELL SAVED HIS LIFE. If you know this Jim Farrell, please send me some e-mail and I can hook you up with my dad for a reunion, if you like.

EASY MED shipped him to the DANISH hospital ship JUTLANDIA (or Jatlandia?) first I think and then he went to the CONSOLATION hospital ship, I believe. Dad (Jim Haswell) remembers the surgeon's name on the American ship as DOCTOR DIBBLE. Dad says he remembers the surgeon well because he was "awake" in surgery when they were literally pulling and scraping his burned skin off and, being a medic himself, he said to the surgeon, "hey, you can't do that to me without giving me something first." heh.

It is possible that the ship was the REPOSE, but I'm pretty sure he said the CONSOLATION. It went to port of call at YOKUSKA (sp?), JAPAN near YOKAHAMA where he went to the hospital ashore, which I don't know the name of.

The captain of the American ship (whichever it was - Consolation or Repose) turned out to be a childhood friend of my dad's mother (WINIFRED THELMA SNELL HASWELL), from BEULAH/BENZONIA, MICHIGAN. Now that's a small world isn't it?

Well that's it for now. everyone take care and we are thinking of you all and all those that fought on this Memorial Day and all the rest of the year as well.

take care, jl haswell
