Comments: I am a recent widow of CDR Robert Winthrop Andrews, USNR (Ret). While going through his papers I found an 8x10 photo of USS PCE 898, about which I knew nothing. My husband did serve in Korea from about 1951/52 to 1954 and was in Amphibious assignments including infiltration and exfiltration into/out of North Korea. He was abruptly transferred to MAAG Indochina in August of 1954 and detailed to the CIA in uniform under command of the then Col. Ed Lansdale (USAF) and was again in clandestine maritime ops. He remained there until late 1955.
Bob was a graduate of Fort Schuyler Maritime Academy (now the Maritime College of the State of NY), class of January 1946. He received an Ensign's commission in both the USNR and the Maritime Service.
If anyone knew or served with Bob in Korea and would like this photo, please let me know and I'll be happy to send it on to you. He passed away Dec. 18, 2014 at the age of 88.

Comments: I have found some additional photos of the PCEC898
showing interior shots, men who served on the ship with
my Dad along with a number of shots of everyday life on
board. Maybe a family member is in those wonderful
photos. I also have a number of photos when the crew
was in Japan. I am guessing the time period to be late
40's.

Comments: I recently discovered that my father, Jonah "Arnold" Rimar (now deceased) served very briefly as a Seaman Apprentice on PCE(C)-898 in 1951.

I'd be very interested to talk to anyone that might remember him or anyone that could give me any background about what the ship was like and what actions it might have been involved in during that time period. I am especially interested in where the ship was home ported as I was later stationed in Yokosuka, Japan aboard USS Midway CV-41.

Thanks,

Robert Rimar

Comments: I served aboard the USS PCEC-898 from Jan. 55' to June 55" as a Seaman Apprentice. The 898 was home-ported at Brooklyn Navy Yard as a reserve training ship. It had 4 officers, 4 chiefs and about 50 enlisted personnel. We steamed to the Caribbean on two week training cruises and spent about a month in port before going out again. In June 55', I was transferred to the USS Rizzi DE-531, also a reserve training ship out of Brooklyn Navy Yard. I was told the 898 was to be de-comminished or transferred to the South Korean Navy.

Comments: I would be pleased to hear from anyone who served on PCEC during tht period or who might remember me. I am presently a LTJG USNR Retired, but I have been a practicing lawyer in Los Angeles for almost the last fifty years. At the time the ship may have seemed a hellhole to some on board, but memory of bad times is clouded in one's old age, and the good times remain vivid in my memory. If anyone recalls me, I would like to discuss that period. Fred Simmons

Keywords: I was assigned to service on PCEC 898 directly from Officer Candidate School as a green Ensign. I served on the ship from 1953 until the ship returned to Hunter's Point in San Francisco where the ship was decommissioned in about 1955.

Comments: Leonard Powell, of Littleton, Colorado, formerly part of crew of USN PCEC 896, and PCEC 898, Died on 20.January 2006. He was buried in Littleton, Colorado, with full military honors. I am sad to report this, but am glad to report that "Rog" was able to open up about his service in the U.S. Navy during Korean War. Please note, He had a bumper sticker on his car stating he was a proud Korean War veteran, and served in this "forgotten war". He is now gone, but not forgotten, and his service is not forgotten. He finished a scrapbook detailing his Naval service shortly before his death. I am glad he did.

Comments: I recently came across a scrape book my uncle keep when he was in the Korean War (Army). Even though he was in the army, I have newsletters about the ship that was used for transport (The Patrick). I would appreciate any information on how to share the newsletters with interested navy people or how to contact an Army web-site to see about contact other people who may be interested in copies of the pictures, newsletters and programs that I have.

Thank you.
